Your video was uber helpful Jules. Thanks for covering the bases here. i just picked up an FM because i am a fan and collector of classic manual film SLRs. Your info gives me the walk thru about it's basic operations and tips on using non-AI nikkor glass.
This was so helpful! I just bought an FM from KEH and am venturing into film and just shot my first role of black & white film. Hopefully, I I have some good images. Very much appreciate this very helpful video.
Note: there are THREE versions of the FM… Version 1: (aka “three-knurl version”). Knurls around shutter speed dial, shutter release AND film rewind knob. Version 2: knurls around the shutter speed dial and shutter release only. Version 3: Only the shutter speed dial is knurled. The focus screen in this version IS interchangeable. If you look above the mirror you’ll see a small screw that gives access to change out the focusing screen. Additionally Nikon made significant upgrades to the internal workings of the camera in this version. This version is considered the best.
The only sentence which come to,me seeing the FM is : simple and beautiful. Even if I prefer the FE :) because you can do all what you do with the FM but more quickly with the aperture priority.
Thank you for this video! Just got an early FM and didn’t know about the shutter release features! Definitely saving this video for reference if I forget how to do something!
I bought a new FM2 in about 1990 and it came with a rubber eyepiece. I later bought 2 second hand ones and they also had them. I'm surprised they weren't supplied with the FM. You could also get correction lenses, +3 to -3 I think. On the FM2 the centre LED is green which I think is an improvement and easier to use. I didn't know there was such a thing as a threaded PC socket. Is that a standard specification or Nikon specific? btw your lens is actually AI-S as it has an orange minimum aperture.
Thanks for watching my video. Prices vary greatly. I got mine with a 50mm 1.8 series E lens for just over $100.00.this past October. I wouldn't pay more than 150.
Are you sure the focusing screen is fixed? On some Nikons without interchangeable viewfinders you can still change the screen but through the lens mount rather than just dropping it in from the top.
@@philmtx3frthe Nikon FM does indeed allow the focusing screen to be changed. See below: There are THREE versions of the FM… Version 1: (aka “three-knurl version”). Excellent video. I just picked up a used, early, FM and your video has been very helpful indeed.
Thank you. Glad to be of help. The FM is a great little camera. Enjoy.

What battery does it take and what does the camera use it for?
Nice looking third version of the FM

Agreed. These different versions do not seem to be widely known.

I get your point, but the FM has the advantage of only needing the battery for the meter.
@@julesvuottosphotofocus4696 sure but a spare battery doesn t take a lot of room in my pocket :)
@@philmtx3fr you’re right.

The treaded pc socket is on many cameras. You are correct the lens is AIS.
1:14 mine has the collar… also had an all black FM like this one. I have an FM2N on the way 😸
I never owned one but I love the FM2N. Thanks for watching.
I’m hoping the meter might work better, and I’ll definitely enjoy the 1/4000 max shutter speed 👍
@@andykphoto The meters work great on many in the FM series
@@julesvuottosphotofocus4696 indeed! But the one in my current FM, not working 😅🤷♂️
@@andykphoto Sorry to hear that.
how much are these cameras now?

FE, fe2, fm2 can, FM can t :(.
Thé FM was the first of the serie, they corrected this issue with the FE.
@@philmtx3fr I see. Thank you.
Yes. The FE has interchangeable screens.
