It looks like you're having fun. Having almost fifty years in model railroading, I have met too many model railroaders who seem just too serious and have forgotten why we kept running trains. Thanks for keeping the fun alive!
Thanks guys for your comments, (and your subscription also!) This IS a modular layout, designed about 10 years ago as a boy scout merit badge project. My son and about 5 other scouts wanted to make their 'Railroading' merit badge, and since we would continue to use the layout as a teaching aid for other scouts in the years to come, it won the all important approval from mom as well. After my son finished with scouting, since 2007, we use the layout to promote this fun, family activity.
Thank you so much for taking time to watch our videos and write! I couldn't agree more, model trains of ALL scales make for a great hobby in one's life. Each scale allows the opportunity for people to enjoy the operation of real trains in a uniquely sized frame of reference. There's even a scale larger than G for folks who want to set-up an outdoor display that they can actually ride! With something for everyone, it truly is 'the worlds greatest hobby'!
Thanks so much for commenting on our outdoor O-scale video! It was a lot of fun to set-up and shoot (though it was pretty darn HOT out on that day). Maybe it's the way the trains were photographed and all, but there were no G-scale trains running on our O-scale, 3-rail track! The video is entirely O-scale, and I should know, I own the layout and the trains! - Pete
Really nice layout. An excellent assortment of trains. Everything is laid out so beautifully. This will definitely be on my favorites list. Thanks for sharing.
Many thanks! Very glad that you got to watch and enjoy my model train video. Please tell your friends about us and share our model train content whenever you can. :)
Thanks so much! We had the perfect day for the video shoot and everything came together so well when it was all edited together! Please share this video with your friends, and thanks again for watching and your post!
great layout and it brings back the memories of times past. I moved past O-scale and have been a Ho modeller all my life. All trains are great from Z scale to G scale, each one is unique. Of course lionel made lots of action cars and buildings, and I still have some of them. keep up the great job, and continue to enjoy a wonderful hobby
Thanks for watching and your comment. Leave us a 'Like', tell your friends about us, and be sure to visit us on our facebook page for even more interesting pictures, videos and posts about 3-rail O-scale model railroading!
Believe it or not, the layout in this video is one that travels with us wherever we go to set up our 3-Rail, O-scale model train activity for veterans, seniors and their families, and the general public. It sets up, and we're operating in less than 2 hours! Our display is over 10 years old now, and holds up real well. You can find out more about how it's wired and put together on our fb page, plus learn more about all we do. Thanks for writing, and for your support! - Pete
In this video we used our modular layout to illustrate its versatility in being used not just indoors, but outdoors as well. It was quite hot on the day we shot this, but we had only only one casualty, our 'Lionelville' diner - the base of it warped. Other than that, everything else worked perfectly outdoors through each take. Look for our NEXT outdoor video coming this summer!!
Good point (although I know of some 3-Rail O-Scale items that are also QUITE expensive). Just for the record, we also like 2-Rail O-Scale, but we sure have lots of fun with our 3-Rail O-Scale as it set up so easily for us to share this hobby with everyone!
You're right, we are having so much FUN with this! With this portable layout, we can provide a full day of model train activity to seniors and their families at any retirement community, anywhere! We set up for veterans and their families, and also the general public. You are welcome to start a Silver Rail Club Chapter in your area - it's quite enjoyable, and very rewarding. Check us out on facebook and see why we're 'on track' to do MORE! Thanks for your comment, and for watching!
If it rains, I guess the ground will get wet. Our modular layout will stay nice and dry however, as it is completely portable, and was only displayed outdoors for the day's video-shoot. Usually it's set up for the general public to enjoy. Find out more about us on our facebook page, and enjoy our many other videos on our You Tube channel!
You are correct!! The NPR Berkshire and the N&W 'J' sets are both Lionel, while the GE -9 and the Burlington Zephyr are MTH. The little 'Beep' is a RMT product.
Our founding chapter of the Silver Rail Club is located in Cumberland County, near Richmond Virginia. There are 3 other chapters of the SRC, one in Highlandsprings VA, Parkersburg WV, and Rural Valley PA. If you would like to share your trains with seniors, veterans, their families and the general public, you are welcome to establish a chapter in your area! Visit us on facebook to learn more. - Pete
Our roads are made from 'non-slip' ladder step tape, a 3-M product. I cut it in lengths, to fit on plastic for-sale signs I've purchased from Lowe's or Home Depot. That way the 'road' can be put down to cover the seam where the tables join together.
Wow, great video!!! Awesome layout and train running action! Is this layout temporary or permanent? It seems that all your beautiful stuff would not last to long if it is pernanently outside. Anyways, thanks for sharing and have a great one!
Lionel makes MILLIONS of dollars every year selling O gauge starter sets, O scale trains, track, and many other things. If there was a problem with what they make then why do so many of us do three rail O? I like 2 rail but it's so expennsive and requires huge amounts of space.
Count me as another subscriber! Question though, are you running MTH as well as Lionel? Some of the rolling stock and structures look like items out of MTH's catalog.
You've got a keen eye! We run a combination of ALL types of O-scale model trains from every manufacturer, as long as they look realistic, and run well! Even the older stuff from AMT and Kusan find their way onto our FasTrack!

You're right, we set up our layout as you see it outdoors only twice a year at the most, and only in good weather. Electric trains wouldn't do so well in the rain!
g bridgman Our layout is portable, so we can easily move it indoors. Find out more about the Silver Rail Club on our fb page and by watching our other videos. Thanks for your question, and for your support!

Ok, so YOU must be new to the world of model railroading. First, this is a FUN hobby, who cares about a 3d rail? These are TOY trains. Originally introduced by the German toy manufacturer Märklin around 1900, products made by them, Lionel, and a few others have used a 3d rail track for decades. They've sold millions of model trains and trainsets, so who's to argue with them? If you're a purist, then 2-rail O-scale is gonna be your thing. Second, our crossing gates are for static display only.
hi everyone ,if anyone else wants to uncover how to build a model railroad layout plans try Megarno Railroad Membership Magician (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my co-worker got great results with it.
This video was very useful. Your layout is wonderful! I love my trains, but I had a pretty tough time setting it all up. This site was very useful as well. Check it out.----- doiop.com/r796k8
O Scale would be cool, but I guess Lionel's designers never observed a real railroad, like there is no middle track on a real railroad. Oh and in this video your crossing gates = fail.

This is nice. Wen I was a kid I lived train sets. I still do actually.
***** Awesome. Dad and I both still operate trains of many different scales as well.

Cool layout. I like the old school McDonalds.
We've purchased most all our trains from TCA members and collectors who sell them on eBay!
Thanks, check out our newest video from the show we did in Chantilly, VA!

Do you only run outdoors on a nice day?? Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought only G scale can run outdoors in all types of weather.
You're right, we set up our layout as you see it outdoors only twice a year at the most, and only in good weather. Electric trains wouldn't do so well in the rain!
The steam locomotive from 6:35 on has a very good whistle. Anyone know what the prototype whistle is or what it's close to?
***** Should be N&W's 600 series.
