We ran into these all the time in Condos and Apartments. They also do it sound deadening between floors. Easy to move around in and run wire or plumbing.
Open web looks great and functional but the cost must be more considering the cut-time and expansion of the floor height… 8’ ceiling with 2x6” would now be closer to 9-1/2’ with 24” open web. Thats a lot of extra building and materials.
Some places are now requiring ceiling fire sprinklers on all residential construction, which makes open web joists extra handy.
Their downsides include greater difficulty in modifying the floor after initial build, eg to raise/lower stairs, or to put in a curbless shower, or to fix an error in the concrete pour that makes them overlength or underlength.
The price doesn't really go up with depth, and practical span rating does, as well as ease for trades. I think a policy of "24 inch trimmable open web joists everywhere" would not be a bad idea. Retain the central bearing beam/wall and you can do 20-25' deep open-ish plan rooms on either side of it.
Why aren't open web trusses your preferred? Cost?
I was going to ask the same thing. I'm training as a truss designer and trying to figure out why would anyone not want to use them
Was wondering the same thing.
