The reason Florida isn't part of "The South" is because it is full of retired Northerners and Latinos. "The South" is more of a culture than its literal location. It's similar to how most wouldn't consider Russians to be "Asian" even though they are a very large part of Asia.

Yes, fried foods and carnivals/fairs goes that together like a horse & carriage. When there, I do like getting a bit of cotton candy tho.
I prefer Toaster Strudels over Pop Tarts.
I like the Jimmy Dean biscuits, sausage & gravy bowl. It’s te whiter gravy not the brown gravy. The only time I’ve used the light brown gravy was at Thanksgiving. Some of our Moms and GranMas used to make their own gravies.
I prefer y food to be baked or grilled. I’m not really into fried.

No, Ranch is anything but mayo. It's made with Buttermilk. So famously so, a lot of Ranch dressing labels say Buttermilk Ranch on them. But yeah, there's some additional seasoning in there as well. And yeah, it's probably the #1 Salad Dressing in the States, followed by Thousand Island, French, and Italian.

Candy Corn is just corn kernel shaped nouget for the most part. And it's colored like a kernel of corn. Yellow at the top end, orange in the middle, and white at the very tip. It's kinda conical in shape, so picture that. A lot of people don't like them, but sone do. And there's kind of a life hack for them as well. Eat them with peanuts and you'll get near the same flavor and texture as a Payday bar. Which is a caramel covered nouget bar with peanuts stuck in the caramel. I don't know if there's a chocolate covered one, but there ought to be. But then again, that's more or less a Snickers bar, right?

Root beer is an American Classic - and is best had really cold, and in a tall chilled mug with scoops of Vanilla Ice Cream ! Root Beer Floats are a national Treasure.
The “south” is more about historical regional cultures than locations which is why Florida and Texas are not “the South”.
Candy corn has nothing to do with corn; it is a kind of plastic feeling sugar bomb made in the shape of corn and colored to look autumnal.
The Best Ranch dressing has a base of buttermilk, sour cream, and just a little mayonnaise.
Gravy in America is hundreds of colors depending on how it is made, I can’t imagine not having cream based gravies - there are dozens of varieties.

There is a sweet UK family (Mr H and Friends). They have been exploring all things US food and they actually held a Thanksgiving dinner for some of their family. The two main dinner items that everyone could not get enough of were the deviled eggs and the sweet potato casserole! With candy corn, the candy itself is supposed to have some likeness to what a kernel of corn looks like when you pluck it from the cob. It has no corn in it but it often does have corn syrup. Candy corn has an almost waxy texture and it tastes like a bit of butter that has been rolled in sugar. Personally, I really like candy corn but I only buy it at Halloween, it is just a traditional candy for that holiday for me. Ranch does have mayonnaise as part of it's base though some use sour cream instead and some use a combination of mayonnaise and sour cream. I make mine with sour cream, mayo and buttermilk. To that add some herbs, onion and I add a bit of garlic. It is creamy and has a bit of a tang. It is a pretty good dip for pizza, too. Air frying is fine but it is not the same as fried. Deep fried anything has a part of its flavor in the fat that remains. It is a lot like baked french fries or fried french fries, baked potato chips or fried potato chips. The texture is similar but the flavor is missing something. Pork Rinds are pork skin that has been boiled, dried then deep fried. I love them with a little hot sauce. Strangely, they are on the dry side, not really greasy at all.

"american cheese" is not considered high quality by Americans....BUT....we do often win praise at international cheese competition. In 2023, we won Silver (2nd place, 2nd best cheese in the world) at the The World Best Cheese Contest in France. So, objectively, Europeans can't say our cheeses are bad, because we score well in THEIR contests. 🙂
"After two days of competition, it is Vincent PHILIPPE (cheese dairy Maison Bordier (Ille-et-Vilaine) France) who wins the trophy. Silver medal was awarded to the American Sam ROLLINS (cheese dairy Cow Bell Fine Cheese, Portland, USA), followed by the English Nick BAYNE ( The Fine Cheese Co., Bath, UK) for the medal of bronze."

    Brown gravy is for meat
Sausage gravy is white sauce made from a roux of the sausage drippings, so more beige than white.
Biscuits are sort of in the bread group of food in the States - like dinner rolls.
British scones are sweet, desert group items.
English muffins ( crumpets) are also considered a bread.
Muffins are, too, even tho they can be sort of sweet, depending on added ingredients ( blue berries & toppings ).

It's only recently that people outside North America don't think mixing salty and sweet is odd. I don't like the wintergreen type mint flavor. You can buy corn dogs in the Iceland store, Kabir. I don't like Twizzlers, and I can only eat so much candy corn before I get ill. Candy corn is just sugar. I don't like sweet potatoes or root beer. I love properly made grits with jalapenos and cheese. Geography doesn't count toward culture. That's why Florida isn't southern. High fructose corn syrup is what the UK would call liquid glucose. Arnold Palmer was a famous golfer. Cracklins are also called pork rinds or, in the UK, pork scratchings. You CAN put pop tarts in a toaster, but a lot of Americans eat them cold.

  • @Ceractucus
    @Ceractucus 3 дня назад +2

Kabir, a lot of people from Chicago would tell you to try tavern style pizza instead of, or in addition to deep dish. Also if in the northeast, try New Haven style pizza called apizza.
A lot of these aren’t really that loved, or only loved by children or eaten very rarely.
Candy corn is just sugar and a waxy substance. Disgusting.
Sweet potato casserole is good stuff, but no marshmallows on top please. Just sliced sweet potato, butter, a bit of brown sugar pumkin spice and a bit of cream poured in and bake and top with walnuts (or nothing).
Root beer is great, but you really need to tailor your choice to how much “root” flavor you want. A&W is a good choice for mass market brands, but Henry Weinhard root beer is fantastic if you don’t like a strong flavor as it tastes almost completely of honey and vanilla. If you want a strong tasting root beer, try Sprechers.
Cereal: I buy cereal with sugar about once per year because I still love Corn Pops and want to spoil myself sometimes. Usually I just have granola, or corn flakes, or grape nuts (wheat nuggets). Even granola often has criminal amounts of sugar, so I just eat it when I need something fast or as a snack.
Kabir hot pockets with tomato and cheese is basically a calzone, but there are ham and cheese hot pockets and other types.

And I personally do not know of any uniquely Florida things. ie foods or customs/mannerisms. Anyplace else in the country u have things that are unique to that area, accent, types of food. Florida is not considered a Southern state ( except the panhandle part that touches Alabama & Georgia ) because during the 1800’s when the southern ‘culture’ was forming - think Gone with the Wind - Florida was not settled except for a few fishing villages/towns on the coast - the rest was swamp & forest, so by 1900, when people started coming down from the northern states to stay in the warm coastal resorts during the winter - their northern influence and later, the Latino influence from Cuba & the Caribbean islands kept it un-southern.

  • @stevedavis5704

Like a lot of things commercially made candy corn and homemade candy corn taste completely different. What he was talking about is fried pork rinds which are fried pieces of pork skin. Cracklings are another name for them. Alot of people that are on strict diets eat them because they are almost calorie free. Pork rinds give you a crunchy salty snack that gives you a feeling of being full without giving you all the bad things that potato chips or other munchies do. Bacon bjts are just bacon that’s been cooked up and then crumbled. They are used on a variety of things but the most common use is on or in salads. You can get fake ones but they are a sad replacement for the real thing.

I was traveling with a group of Australians to Thailand and I saw a can of root beer at a convenience store and I bought it, surprised it was even available in Thailand. I have always heard only Americans can tolerate the taste and I have always loved root beer. I asked the Australians to try it and it was a universal hard pass. They all hated it and nearly spit is out. They said it taste like mouth wash. They were amazed that I could drink it.

"Florida is the only place the further north you go, the further south you get."
Mint & chocolate? Yeah, I like it well enough but I don't go searching for it.
Corn dogs? Ehh, carnival food, not on the top of my list.
Twizzlers - haven't had licorice whips or similar since I was a kid, 60 years ago. They were ok, but again, I wouldn't shop for them. Same for candy corn, root beer, cakes w/candies, catsup/ketchup, Ranch dressing, any sort of coffee or tea, fried carnival food, twinkies,
Sweet potatoes are the only thing I can't eat. I can't even stand the smell of them.
    Bloomin' Onion? Grits? Hell yeah!
When I was a kid in school, especially when I was playing sports, I ate a LOT of cereal. 3-4 boxes/week would have been normal.
Cheez Wiz is waxy garbage. Imagine eating a candle that the wax didn't really set right. Just don't.... ever.
Sugar in bread - Sorry, but I have to call BS. While some breads may vary, the last time I looked plain old white bread in the U.S. has less sugar than the same in England (search the product labels here and there.) I had to use a VPN to see the nutrition labels in your stores.
It's 'ranch' NOT 'raunch' as in 'raunchy'.
It's not real sweet tea unless there's an inch (25mm) of sugar in the bottom of the pitcher.
Chicago pizza? Hell no. Who needs more carbs? And chewing, and chewing and ch...
We have brown gravy here as well. We use it on beef and/or mashed potatoes, exclusively. If you really want to mess up your mind try Red Eye Gravy, it is the bomb on breakfast ham and sop up any remaining with your buttermilk biscuit.

Ranch is my favorite condiment. I live in Wisconsin. We love it here.
Loving ranch and cheese here in WI in my mind is equivalent to most Brits loving tea and scones.
I've liked mint chocolate ice cream since I was a kid. Rocky Road has been my favorite since I was a teenager
but I still like mint chocolate chip.

Geographically, Florida *is* part of the South. But due to the high number of people who have moved here from the Northeast and other areas, culturally it is far less so. And the Cuban influence in the Miami area adds even another non-Southern flavor.⬅
I'm an American who doesn't like Ranch dressing. But then, I don't really like mayo either, so probably the distaste is related.

As an American, I hate Cheese Whiz and love Hershey's Kisses, which are softer and less "waxy" than the candy bars. Not in love with European chocolate, some of which I find too rich, to the point of being sickening. I like peanut butter and chocolate separately but HATE them together. Marshmallows on sweet potatoes? Why on earth do you need to add sugar on top of a healthy veggie that's already naturally sweet? Mint blends well with chocolate flavor, but not much else. [Side note: I wanted to try something quintessentially English while at a nice London restaurant many years ago, so I ordered steak & kidney pie. Looked beautiful and was probably well-made, but it smelled and tasted awful!]

Cracklin’s are pigskin that’s been deep-fried. It also comes in barbecue flavored which I highly recommend over the regular. Why? Because as soon as you open a regular bag, it smells like barnyard. And not in a good way.
As far as biscuits and gravy goes, I’ve never seen one person from outside of the United States, Try it and say they didn’t like it. Every single foreigner said that they loved it, So why is it on the list? Also, Twinkies are liked by a lot of people outside of the US. Twislers Is inferior to red vine. If you try it get red vine, strawberry flavored.

Cracklings and pug skins are two different snacks. Cracklings are cute into short strips that are are, I say, about 1/16" inch thick and quite hard to eat. Pig skins, on the other hand, almost melt in you mouth.

I don’t like chicken and waffles. I’m not a fan of mint flavored things, except for maybe toothpaste. I like chocolate flavor the way it is. Mint only ruins it. I don’t like Twizzlers, and I can’t stand candy corn either. I will stop there. This is a good list of items that people from all over the world don’t like, including many Americans.

OK, WHEN we say the South, we are talking about Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, as far as FOOD goes, there were other Southern states if you are talking about the Civil War, but when referring to "THE SOUTH" depends greatly on the context of the conversation, and when you are talking about "THE DEEP SOUTH" those would be the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

Ranch can vary in quality, but Wingstop ranch IS that good
(although I would never pour it over like a psychopath, the point with wings and fries is to dip. Pouring it over a salad is obviously the original point, but being a dip has surpassed being a dressing.)
