- In a previous video I showed how I germinated Saguaro cactus seeds in a ziplock baggie, and I demonstratedhow I planted the Saguaro cacti seedlings in cactus/ succulent potting soil & seed starter mix.
In this 4 month update video, I show you what the Saguaro Cacti seedlings look like after 4 months of my germination experimental video.
I reveal the most successful method that worked for me with the best results. I had the best using a gritty mix potting medium with surface as one of the ingredients.
I also show a gritty mix recipe as an example, for those of you who are interested in growing cacti seedlings yourself with great results.
One very good gritty mix recipe to use is Al's Gritty Mix:
Al's Gritty Mix 1-1-1 ratio of:
1 part Bark Fines
1 part Turface
1 part Granite
The bark fines should be between 1/8"- 1/4" in size.
Each ingredient should be about the same size.
I hope you enjoy the video, & good luck growing your own cacti seedlings. - Хобби
My home backs the desert in Phoenix. The cactus grow under a nurse plant (like a bushy Palo verde)so not direct sun in the early years. The soil has soil decomposed granite in areas, but is largely a fine to gritty clay with little organic matter and a lot of calcium carbonate. Ph is high, like 8.5. The clay bakes on top bot holds moisture pretty well. Clay at home is would like kill them. They germinate during the monsoon in August, and survivability is highest when on the south side of the nurse plant.
wow those little saguaros got some nice spines in that first container you showed after just 4 months! I hope mine will look that good after such a short time.
You should do another update, since it’s been a couple of years. Very curious about the progress.
Such an informative vid. My saguaro seeds arrived and this vid is guiding me. I can't wait to see more. Thanks for the gritty mix recipe! 👍🙂
Great! Update. It’s neat watching your journey. I sowed Cardon cactus (the saguaro cousin lol) seeds about 6 days ago and they germinated on the 4th day and I still have them in their tiny green house. I love these beautiful style cactus😊 Nice to hear and see your tips also, looking forward to the next updates!
That is so awesome. It's amazing how fast they germinated.
How many seedlings do you have, and how did you get your seeds?
Yes they germinated very quickly. Unsure if they’ll survive lol. I have 10 nicely germinated out of 12. It’s my first time. I don’t have hopes set too high as it’s quite challenging from what I’ve seen/heard to get them all to year 1 and beyond, but I’ll try haha.
I found them on eBay.
@@ContinuesToTick How exciting. Well, let's try to make it to 1 year then.
My main concern for mine is with winter approaching. I'm not sure how well the seedlings can tolerate the cold, so I'm keeping them where they are inside.
My other concerns are with lighting, and moisture. I do have some other ones that I didn't show in the video that are too wet, so I hope they make it.
This video is so informative, thank you. I’d love to see how they look now if you still have them!

Muito obrigado por compartilhar conosco o seu conhecimento. Eu estou tentando fazer a mesma coisa aqui no Brasil. 🤩
Onde você mora no Brasil? Eu moro nos Estados Unidos. Minha namorada mora em Fortaleza. Minha ex namorada mora em Santos. Eu amo Brasil. Eu tenho sementes de cactus de Ceará. Boa sorte

Put holes in the bottom of the container then insert it In A small pan with little water. Water from the bottom.
Where did you get the seeds ?
Hi! My small saguaros are 8 months old but they are very small, like the ones in your second pot. But I dont cover the pots with anything and water them like once in two months. I planted them in the special soil for cactuses. I dont know if repotting them in your mix will be a good idea- they look so gentle ( What do you think?
That is so awesome that you are growing saguaro seedlings too!
I would just leave them in the soil they are already in.
I wouldn't want to disturb them yet until they get bigger to the point of getting so big that I would be concerned that they are crowded too close together, or that their roots are growing too close to each other that they could get tangled/intertwined. So, I think you still have plenty of time keeping them in the same pot.
You didn't need a heat mat ?
I've got some started and I was concerned about the temperature being too low
No, I didn't use a heat mat. I just kept them indoors on the windowsill as you can see at the beginning of the video. They barely received early morning sun through the window.
My 4 month old saguaros are grey and purple. Do you know what the problem is?
Disclaimer: I am not a cactus expert.
I just checked out your video "cactus babies". Are those the ones you're talking about?
They look really cute! And they look like they are coming along nicely.
If I had to guess about the color, I would guess maybe it's the lighting. Are they under an artificial light? If yes, I wouldn't worry too much this early about the color because later they will eventually go under natural lighting and adjust.
Another guess, maybe yours are just a different variety than mine.
Also, where did get your seeds from? Someone reputable who you trust? Or online?
I personally wouldn't buy seeds on Ebay from a seller out of the U.S. because I would just assume the seller is a scammer. However, I personally would somewhat trust a U.S. seller on Ebay who has 100% good feedbacks.
