One of the best opening scenes of any horror/slasher film. I was terrified after seeing this movie because it was such a real life situation that could happen to anyone.
I love that pause when Ghostface says “Cuz I wanna know who I’m looking at.” She stands there frozen in automatic fear, it’s like you can feel her stomach drop, her heart begin racing, and her face starting to flush from stress. What makes it even creepier for me was the dog beginning to bark, and you can see her acknowledge it too, we associate dogs at the dark of knight barking with an intruder near your property, wether it be an animal or a person, but since this is a scary movie and her flight or fight instincts are already kicking in you can bet she was thinking the 2nd option.
If you watch the school scene before the principal dies he is looking around and sees a janitor. The Janitor is in a Stripped shirt and his name is “Fred”...Funny thing is not only does it reference Nightmare on Elm Street but the Janitor was also Wes Craven

Such a terrifying and amazing scene. And although it does feature some gore later on, the psychological torture is used very well and Drew Barrymore was excelent in here

There's so many horror films out there, it's a good movie but I wouldn't say it's the "king" in fact I wouldn't say any movie is the king of any genre, it's too bold of a claim and it's bound to start an argument
Actually despite how this scene was parodied and done to death the following years, it still holds up extremely well which is why the first Scream is a classic all around. Nothing can touch it, especially this opening scene.
