Since your m48 doesn't have a creast, you have a m48 B.O which is an export model. It's basically an m48 without Yugoslavian markings. Hence the for export designation.
Heavy, dried out storage grease is certainly preferable to rust, so I agree "It seems to be in pretty good shape." Thanks for posting. Looking forward to similar interesting videos as your newest subscriber.
Yeah, Alan and Bill and a couple of my other subscribers said it's a BO model meant only for export. Likely why there's no crest, but still very nice! Thanks!
The Yugos made quite a few of these for export as the "BO" and didn't put a crest on them. A few countries who made Mausers did that. I have a Czech vz24 Mauser made for a Romanian contract that has no crest for example. And some countries would grind them off and sell them like a lot of the Argentine Mausers you'll see. But these were purpose built for export so they never had a crest.
I bought one of those when they had them on the site. I have thought of getting a second one. One to shoot and one to leave packed in the cosmoline. I keep a lot of my collection packed for storage if I don't shoot it often.
Best way to strip cosmoline. Take a can of break or carb cleaner and start spraying it off, melts like butter. Another method is citristrip for the wood but that will remove all the finish for the most part.
@@The_Casual_Collector that’s one way. But honestly if you strip the rifle and just blast the metal bits with a can of break or carb cleaner it washes right off and comes out bone dry. I normally rinse it and the wood with water from a hose then oil as needed when done.
Ive always used gas, itll ruin any varnish, but on most old guns, its boiled linseed oil, not varnish on the wood, so its easy to replace.. most old guns need stock refinishing anyway.
Wish I would have been into these back in 2010 when I got into milsurp. You could get an unissued mint M48 from Aimsurplus for $248. Sadly I sold so many amazing milsurps back then (K31, M39 unissued, M44s in mint, etc.) I’ve had my Wife’s grandfather’s WW2 bring back K98 Mauser for many years now and have never been able to shoot it due to the family not wanting it fired. Now I can get some Masuer time with the Yugo. Hopefully it’s in good shape, I paid $649 for mine. Almost got one on this batch you got yours.
I picked up a 48A thru Gunbroker. It came with a crest so was, thus, not originally intended for export. Like you I would've preferred a 48, but as it was going for $500 I dealt with it. And, yep, mine was also slathered in Cosmoline. So the metal work spent time in a mineral spirit bath before being rinsed and brushed. The stock still has some Cosmoline in it. One day I might get motivated to remove the metal from the stock, and toss the stock in my car's trunk on a sunny South TX summer afternoon to let the Cosmoline go soft and come up from the wood. After which I'll wipe it off. But, for now, it can wait.
Well, I kept watching all the way to the end.... I guess we all look for different things, but for me I think I would have checked to see if the bolt, reciever etc, etc, had matching part numbers???? But you never got around to that... just the stock. I bought an m48 thru the mail for 89.95 back in the day, came with bayonet and frog, sling, cleaning kit and oil can, it wasn't new, but it was a fun gun to mess with, and a spam can of ammo for around 100.00, those were the good Ole days!
Thanks, I'm hoping to have the first one posted in a series for the M43 Spanish Mauser that I had done in another one of my videos this coming weekend...waiting on a new camera setup to arrive.
Yup that's a BO but it's a beauty! Atlantic really should have listed these separately for people who wanted a crest or allowed a handpick option for a crest. Not dissing your rifle, it's a great example and will be a great shooter. I love Yugo/Zastava stuff. Now you need a M24/47 to go along with it! After doing 60 or so milsurp rifles the best trick I found for heavy cosmo like this is go get a big tube of PVC, cap one end and put the screw on plug on the other. Put the barreled action in, take it to the bathtub and fill with as hot of water as your tap will handle. Let it soak, agitate it now and then, dump down the drain and do it again. Usually one or two rounds of that will melt and wash it all off. Quickly dry it and hit it with ballistol. Saves so much time and effort. I used mineral spirits in the pvc first before someone told me to just try hot water, which worked way better. For the small stuff I just use real hot water in an ultrasonic (the sink would do fine too) Tom's 1/3 mix would be great for that stock. Just get the cosmo out with some heat, put your sandpaper in a completely different room in a locked box, then hand rub Tom's on there until you feel it get hot. It's BLO, beeswax, and mineral spirits I believe. It's also good for putting over plain BLO if you have a really dry stock. It doesn't make it look glossy or anything, but the wax gives it a good protective layer beyond what the BLO will do. Keeps them looking "military correct" I have a M48A from SOG that's in real nice shape like this, and a M48 and a 24/47 that are both nice but well-worn. I feel bad for people who missed out on SouthernOhioGun. They were the best large milsurp source by far when I got into the game (2011) because their conditions were conservative if anything, instead of places like Classic who list a lot of stuff a grade higher than it should be. Sometimes you'd buy a "good" from SOG and get something much closer to VG-E, and their handpick was legit unlike Classic. They would even pick out specific things for you on their regular handpick fee if they had it, for instance requesting a Walther P1 with the reinforcing bolt or blued vs parkerized. Sorry, had some member berries going there.
Lol, all good, I appreciate the tips, and I think I'll try those methods. Yeah, unfortunately, I got in the game late, but I guess better late than never.
@@The_Casual_Collector No prob! I was so surprised to see how well hot water works compared to mineral spirits. I was actually pouring the dirty spirits out and filtering it to use on the next one....but with water I just rinse it all down the drain and don't have to mess with it. I am glad you've been able to still find some good deals this late in the game.
That's an M48BO, intended for export. Hence, no crest on the receiver. It appears to be in excellent condition. I had to take laquer thinner, Gun Scrubber and tooth brushes to mine to remove the cosmoline. Happy shooting.

@@The_Casual_Collector I didn’t even realize they advertised M48/M48A. I just jumped on it when I saw them back in stock due to missing the last batch. I emailed them to ask if I could request an M48 and they said the entire batch is M48As. Not sure why they even said M48.
