The comment she mentioned is just illogical on its own, in my opinion... it´s like saying "I can´t believe you hired a lawyer... just look up stuff on the internet and deal with it on your own" or "Just ask a friend to pull your tooth out, you don´t need a dentist"... that´s why there are so many different professions to choose from, because not everyone is an expert in everything and that´s extremely valuable, because by "trading" our gifts and services (in exchange for money), we save time and nerves.... that´s the way we actually help each other out, probabaly since the beginning of human life...

Maintenance tip: Once I got myself decluttered and organized, I setup a strategic maintenance routine to keep things tidy. 1) Every Sunday night I take a laundry basket around the house and collect anything that is out of place. I make a second route putting things away. Takes about 10 minutes. 2) On my main level, I have about 8 large drawers or banks of drawers, 12 cabinets, and 4 closets. Kids rooms are excluded. Each week I take 15 minutes and reorganize one of the cabinets, closets or banks of drawers. It doesn't take long since they are already organized. I cycle through all of them 2x a year and it keeps things as pristine as the day I finished my declutter. Good luck!!!

When I started decluttering, what was in my mind was how other people saw my house in its cluttered state and how they would see it in a decluttered state as an expression of me. But what I discovered was that the true joy in decluttering my space was how I felt in my house -- the joy and peace that an orderly and simplified environment would give me. The research + literature on ADHD (+ most other diagnoses in the DSM-5) was mostly done on school aged boys with Hyperactive-Type. So in the past few years, many women have been able to pursue a diagnosis in adulthood.

The tapes from his childhood, the sounds he used to hear as a child, the tape of his prerecorded “auto-responses” in order to deflect rather than deal with the issue. I used to get offended, but now I see it as an opportunity to turn the tapes off and allow God to show us a better way. A new sound. New responses. The only way tackle old challenges and is to start.

I have to say though he works a very stressful job 5 days a week and he does help me on the weekends with no issues. My problem is he will not hold the kids accountable for helping with anything in the house, but still spoils them rotten, with material thinks and lavish vacations or going on vacations with their friends. I just feel like he doesn’t back me up in that regard, he’d rather do it himself then for them to have to do it.

I am a naturally neat and organized person so I don’t know why this video was recommended to me 😂 BUT I cried while watching it. You are changing your girls’ lives for sure. I say that as a child of very messy parents who ended up marrying a hoarder. We are divorced now, my mental health couldn’t take it. Like you said, like any addiction or struggle, you cannot tell them to just clean up. This is for sure a form or side effect of anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD- and there is help. It may not seem
like being messy or unorganized is a big deal, but it absolutely can be a HUGE deal. You and your family are beautiful, btw 😊

@ofthegirl, hello, I just wanted to say I love your response here, I have always myself been or was expected to be a neat and organized person growing up as a child my mother expected my sister and I to do all the cleaning and up keep of the home, so I carried that expectation into my adult life, but did not put it on my kids to do. However, now in my older years (49yrs old) I don’t know what has happened to me, I suffer tremendously with anxiety, depression, OCD and ADD, and have physical mobility issues that affects my ability to do the things I used to be able to do in My Home. My husband, grew up in an unorganized messy home because his mother was one that I think thought that spending time and doing things with her children was more important than worrying about the house being organized and clean, so my husband has that same thought process and thinks I hold myself prisoner to the maintenance and duties of what the house looks like and that has now carried over to my children, so I fight a losing battle with the entire family! I can’t get them to realize that it effects my mental health tremendously when the house is a disaster, and makes me feel so disrespected by them not considering my feelings about it. But what do you do, I’m only one person and yes I’m a stay at home mom but it’s still so overwhelming that I can’t find the courage and motivation to do anything about it! I wish I had the guts to say okay my dear family since you all don’t want to help me with what I need in the house to feel at peace, then I’m just going to hire someone to come in and do it for me. So for the long post, guess your response just struck my feelings and I needed to vent. Lol

    • @ofthegirl

@@christamckee3997 by all means, vent! I have struggled with anxiety and ADHD so growing up with messy parents was tough. I never felt like I had a good place to study and concentrate and nobody understand that my surroundings made it so hard. Then I married a hoarder. I was at home with 4 little kids and I went into such a depression fighting the clutter alllll the time! My ex was a great dad and a good guy, so it feels bad to say that I just couldn’t stay and support him through the hoarding. But my mental health was suffering so bad. I tried all kinds of medication but most of it made me feel numb and I started to resent that I was the one looking for help when I want the one hoarding! It’s just one of those things where people will only get help when THEY want it. I’m 49 too and all of my kids are adults now, 3 of them are so neat and clean and won’t even visit their dad :( But one shows the same tendencies as him and it worries me. I think outside help is a great idea.

I just found your channel last night and the thing I love most about your channel and house so far is that it's real life. Your house isn't instagram perfect that reminds me of a museum where kids can't make messes. Your house is real life. Your kids are allowed to be themselves and play and to make messes. Even though you got to the point where you needed help, you aren't afraid to admit it because at some point, we all need help. That's life. Your channel isn't fake life, you don't pretend it's all perfect and I love this because I believe even if we don't want to admit it, this is how ours lives are too. I'm so happy you were able to find help and relieve all that extra stress because I know how good it feels to declutter my house and get rid of everything extra. I'm not a minimalist, but it's so nice to just say bye bye to things we don't need and have that extra space.

I am a busy full time nurse, going through grad school, mom of two boys 9 and 7, and a husband who works overnight shift work. To tell you time is not on our side is an understatement and free time is rare and when we have off days we just want to spend them with the kids. BUT, so much stuff has piled up over the years and I feel exactly like how you described, paralyzed and overwhelmed by decisions. I feel like where do I start and I am in the same boat you were in with needing to separate the boys and give them their own space since they share a room now. I want to do what you did and hire someone because I honestly think having a neutral party come in and see a space and what it could be is much better but we just don’t have the money right now. But seeing your video gives me so much encouragement because it makes me feel like it can be done and if I just tackle it one room at a time I can do it and allowing myself the 4 hr increments like you guys did makes me feel like on my off days I can dedicate a solid 4 hours and the rest of the day is family time. Thank you so much for sharing this and being so transparent because it makes me feel like I am not alone in this struggle. Very inspiring video and look forward to seeing more of your future videos.

Not everyone has a group of friends that would want to invest time in helping someone declutter their house. Full kudos to you for engaging a professional. The completed task so far probably wouldn't have been as effective or could have created tensions between you and friends if they had helped you. I know when my sister has helped me with decluttering, I totally hate it. She is far more cut throat and ruthless than me, and I feel like I am being judged. I am a bit of a hoarder and one of my goals this year (2023) is to declutter more and have spaces in my home beautifully organised so that I can easily find things. Some areas are and some aren't, but I have a long way to go with systemising or making things easy to find. There is nothing worse than getting frustrated, let alone wasting time, not being able to find the thing 😀

We want it sorted because it grows without noticing and then one day we trip over this mountain and say "where did you come from" 🤣. And our lives get more complications and distractions and the last thing we need is to be hampered by STUFF. So just keep chipping away at it, I've had several goes at multiple areas of the house and I'm still not done. I'm definitely eager for that day where I'm on to the maintenance phase. But each clear out is a victory.

I definitely have a lot of things, but my real struggle is that I have sentimental feelings about nearly every belonging and I'm just trying to get my room to a place with quieter emotions!

This was an extremely relatable video!! The overwhelm is so stressful. When we moved for my husband's job, the relocation benefit included a professional organizer and it was SO AMAZING. I never would've been able to pack up and move the house without her first helping me unload so much stuff. (My husband had already moved out for the job so I was on my own for the actual packing and moving. 😭)

You hiring a professional organizer was gold!! You have your strengths & she has hers and you are so smart to self actualize that! Happy 40!! I promise age is a blessing & each year I learn something new.

I’m only 20 and do a lot of cleaning/cooking/organizing already for my family. I love this video because it encourages me to try and find what my strengths are and bless someone who has it as their weakness. Also to not feel like I have to be perfect at all these things and get help when I need it. God bless you and your family 💜

Thank you so much for making this! It’s showing us that it’s okay to ask for help and to even pay for it. In a world where mental health is struggling, we have to show that it’s okay to ask for help. ❤

As a newly certified organizational specislist, THANK YOU, for giving us credit for our profession. I am so proud of you, your family, your spaces, and for showing the real and that it can become a reality! Just as someone would pay a fitness trainer, nutrition coach, a housecleaner...we all need a little help sometimes! God gifts us in many different ways to bless each other. 🎉

As someone who does professional cleaning & organizational help, I find it SO important for everyone to take a step back from their judgment of others' spaces. Everyone has something they wish to change in their home system. Compassion goes so very far! ☺♥

I was looking for audiobooks from the library to listen to while I crocheted a few years ago and came across Marie Kondo's book. I took a week to follow her method and it absolutely changed my family's lives. The feeling of having everything so organized and accessable, and knowing that everything in my home is useful instead of useless clutter, feels so freeing.

Yes, having a good friend who KNOWS what to do to help would be great. For the rest of us Hiring a professional is the best option. No one is good at everything and sometimes we have too many obligations, work, family, etc. I’m thankful I found your channel today and am now encouraged to start the journey myself. Thank you for being transparent and encouraging us to start somewhere.

As someone who is that friend, naturally tidy and likes to organise, I do think that sometimes having an external person is still the best. I have offered several friends help, but I think they feel bad and ashamed BECAUSE we are friends. I totally do not judge them and want to help them because I love them and it’s honestly not a chore to me (and they also help me with other things I am not good at) but I do understand that hiring a stranger can also have benefits.

Oh my goodness! You sound like me! I can crunch numbers, make budgets, see trends, etc. so much so that I have my own bookkeeping company. Seeing a mess in my home absolutely paralyzes me. It’s like I don’t know what to do, where to start, nothing. I’ve been wanting to hire a housekeeper just to keep up with the things I can’t keep up with, but really I need a professional organizer. My dh hasn’t wanted to have someone come into our home to help. He keeps saying we can do it ourselves. I’m going to show him your two videos and hope for the best! From another 40yo to another, Thank you!!

Brilliant.. your house looks fantastic! Well done for getting help.
I have been doing whole house declutters since Jan 2017, when my (now) ex moved out. I found the house overwhelming for years with kids, job, marriage etc..
The first year (2017) was separating our 17yrs of life together. I packed 90 boxes of his stuff. He still has to pick up 50. In 2018 I decluttered my stuff, my kids and my joint stuff and the kids stuff with them.
In 2019 I did the attic, garden shed and the house a 2nd time. And organised memory stuff (except digital photos)
I haven't done any declutter since 2019.... this year i will do another whole house declutter... I can't wait. I also need to donate and sell stuff.
Keep going... you seem to have the "declutter bug" which is so great!

Congratulations! I was brought up to be independent, and I am eternally grateful. It was difficult for me to realize that I don't have to know how to do everything and that's its ok to ask for help. I'm glad you are at that point and can pass down this to your daughter's. And kudos to your husband for supporting your decision.
