  • Metaphors are a key practice in NLP training and coaching. A metaphor (as used in NLP) is much more than telling a story. There are different form of metaphor constructs with specific variables depending on the intention for delivering the story. In this video, John talks about isomorphic metaphors with one to one mappings, and how to construct this type of story.

Metaphors are bread and butter in my treatment of stuttering and speech anxiety. John Grinder is a pioneer.

It's a breathing problem. fix their breathing, fix the speech. You can't have anxiety if you're breathing in and out in and out..

I really want to know the technique that John used to know how the people breath, he said that by physiology (by the position of the person) he can know the rhythm of the breathing. Can anyone share this technique, or a video talking about it?

it might help to first define what a metaphor is.

If you don't know what a metaphor is you may want to revisit primary school. Should we also define what a person is, a car, math, what shoes are.. Buy a dictionary.

well - the way NLPers use the word metaphor is much broader to what they teach at school (simile, metaphors, merism... there are 1 million of them) so Vanirvis, if you don't want to be polite at least please be correct.

Metaphor is a profoundly deep concept, something which the wisest lovers of wisdom have grappled with since the beginning of time. It will make your head spin. This is not an exaggeration. It is at the heart of life and thought.
Real thinkers are aware that the notion of metaphor is so great ... one can spend a lifetime contemplating its meaning and application. Do animals experience metaphor? How does metaphor influence the advancement of civilization? What is the ultimate source of metaphor? Is it found in nature? What can possibly be known through it? Is metaphor a mode of existence? Is it intrinsic to language? What is the relationship of metaphor to sound versus sight? Does biology use metaphor to transduce meaning?
Bateson's article "Men Are Grass" is a must. It will open up a way of thinking in you that is neglected in modern world.
(This neglect of REAL THINKING started in *primary school* .... with a way of "understanding" -- pardon the misnomer -- that literally strips ideas of their essence, in favor of a rigid framework which is nothing but a gross distortion of reality. This is not thinking. We are not in touch with life -- we make frames which refer back to life. I say that, if modern science "puts nature to the torture rack" ... then having a real understanding of metaphor is a way into returning to sanity and seeing Nature for its intrinsic worth. So long as you remain true to nature -- not inventive theories.)
I highly suggest the book, "The Body in Mind" by Mark Johnson -- a modern philosopher extending the ideas of Kant. Very accessible and inspiring.
*"There is no non-metaphorical standpoint from which one could investigate metaphor.''*
