It's particularly important to prepare yourself for wave 40 as you sell your farms at around waves 38-39 to MAINLY get more Commanders. This is also a non-existent problem in versus because any competent player is going to consistently send when it matters (waves 9,11,14,19,21,22,23,etc.)

The time in between waves is annoying I agree but it's so if your struggling you have time before another horde of zombies comes (I think)
