If ever a building or store captured the spirit of rock and roll, it is the truly great House of Guitars in Rochester, NY. I grew up in Canandaigua and whenever we could, my buddies and I would make the 45-minute pilgrimage to what to us was rock and roll nirvana. Great atmosphere, prices and people. The best selection of instruments and records I've ever seen. Classic avant-garde TV commercials. Members of the great Chesterfield Kings worked here! It's the best music store to this day.
I would have reason to drive by the place on Titus. I knew one of the guys who had been a cell mate of Armand when I lived on the corner of Dewey and Emerson in 1972 to '74. Sad violent stories of life and the cold struggles of an important city. Beat, beatdown.
I was in there a couple of days ago. After I'd bought a few things I told the guy that there's literally too much to look at in the music store wing. I've been going there since I was in high school.
I grew up in Rochester, and spent alot of time searching for great LP'sin this store..One great find, is an album recorded live in Rochester one snowy christmas eve; the group was "RAIN". the label for that recording was WAZOO. Great seeing this video! (ask Armand about that group).
That place is full of music.I love going there seeing as they have a very large selection of music. The only problem is that I kinda get nervous that I may step on something or break it.The place is a mess, but it's a wonderful mess.
Didn't have time to mention that in the early days they used to classify the LPs by record label! But the new, hot releases were in that circular thing in the front. Nice vid but where is Armand? (Who made some great records himself.) And where is the legendary Mr. Tomato? (Star of some of the best HOG commercials.)
Even in Canada, w/Buffalo Chnl 4 TV over the airwaves... I was infected with the 'guitar desire' virus by HOG... before I die, my mecca is... the House of Guitars! Dog Gamnit!
Man I've tried to buy stuff from this place so many times, I live in Rochester not far from it. I NEVER get customer service, their stuff is always over priced. Not to mention their guitars are piled on top of one another so any new guitar is going to be blemished. If you want anything that is not on the floor you spend a half hour digging it out trying not to break anything, and then they tell you an outrageous price for it! It is a REALLY cool place... but not a great business for the consumer.
That Gibson clock behind Bruce is really cool!

We were on a tight schedule, and most of this was done on a day he wasn't in.
