"Big pair of.....headphones" is NOT where i thought where you were going with that! I laughed so hard all by myself. Came for the d35 review i swear it! 😂
At 23:50 I have to point out that it isn’t the 3 piece back of the 35’s that give more harmonics, it’s cuz the 35’s have thinner 1/4 inch bracing as opposed the the thicker 5/16. This is the only/main contributor to tone differences than 28’s. The 3 piece back arguably had no effect on the tone, just strictly cosmetic.
I have an SL Mossman 1975 great plains guitar. Bought it in 1975. It cost $500 with a hard case. Two piece Rosewood back and sides. It’s 45 years old now but the wood that was used to build it was already 40 years old. I brought it to a guitar store in my area yesterday. I played against a Martin D 28 and a Taylor. The tailor was over $4000 not sure what the Martin cost. It was like playing a $500 guitar compared to mine. I owned a 1973 Martin D18 at the time I purchased the Mossman. And I loved that guitar. But the Mossman sound was so much fuller and louder I had to buy it. I sold my Martin to a friend of mine for $300 +2 ounces of really good weed. Don’t remember the exact price of the Martin but it was definitely less than $500. I can’t say for sure if it got better with age because I certainly didn’t. But when taken care of a good instrument will last many lifetimes.
I just bought an HD28 a few days ago. I've owned D35 and HdD35;s in the past. My Favorite? None of the above. I had a Collings D1A that smoked all of them. It was a hoss. Must be a mahogany guy at heart.
Actually, when I went out to buy my dream guitar, these plus the D-28, were the ones I played at a couple of music stores. I recognized that guitars within a category can sound a bit different. Of the ones I played, the D 35 was my favourite and that's the one I bought. It's exquisite. Having said that, I loved the HD 28 and the D 28 too--and a part of me has wanted to get my hands on one of them too. But if push came to shove, I would keep my D 35. Superb sound. I have the anniversary edition--not the Brazilian wood version--but the standard one from 2016.
@@hhc1000 I did. The HD-35 did sound great---even a little more alive than the D-35. But, for me, the D-35 I bought was the best of the four Martins I tried out. To be honest, the two things that made me question the HD-35 that I played at that time were the light bracing (I worried about the long-term sturdiness of the instrument) and the look of that specific guitar (each guitar in a category, as you know, has its individual characteristics). My D-35 is gorgeous and it sounds so good. It's even better now with age. BTW, I'm sure I would have been happy with any one of the four Martins.
@@ronkrupovich7152 Thanks Ron. I picked up on the sturdiness point on all of them actually. Lighter than I expected but not based on anything really. I'm leaning towards the HD28E or HD28, but I'd like to try a broken in one a little. Brand new ones left me a little underwhelmed for some reason although I think that's partially because I'd built them up so much in my mind before picking one up!
@@hhc1000 the HD 28s are beautiful and I have been thinking about getting one for some time. When I was making my choice, it ended up being between the D35 and the HD28.
I love my D-35. For some reason the HD35 sounded really nice (higher grade tone woods?) but I won't be buying any more unfortunately. But I am happy and only need one Martin.
Just watched your video. Great job for just doing nothing on a Friday night. I believe you would most definitely pick the hd-28 today. It’s a brand new ball game today with the scalloped forward shifted bracing . What you think. Again enjoyed video very much and thanks friend . Jeff Clark from ROCKDALE Texas
But I love the D35 as well. Man you are blessed with such great guitars and cursed at the same time for having to pick. Good luck! Tell us which ones you finally stuck with.
All three sound fantastic! I chose the HD28 after weeks of deciding back and forth. My wallet hates me. I'm sure I will be back wanting another Martin. That HD35 sounded great. Thank you for the video!! Best comparison I have seen.
I know I'm a couple years late on this, but I would have sold the HD35. The HD35 is lush, rich, deep...but the HD28 covers this territory well and still maintains definition with a unique character. It can also be a bluegrass machine, plays rocknroll well, and a good country strummer. D35 is the ultimate singer singer songwriter guitar with a little mid range scoop for the voice to settle into.
Great video. All three guitars sound great and in isolation, I'd be very happy with any of them but if I had to choose, my favourite is the HD-35, then the HD-28 and finally the D-35. I enjoyed watching and listening!
I have a d-35 and hd-28 also Gibson j-45. I have the luxury of not having to sell either. They are all different in their own way. Good video. Yes you have a rough decision to make. The quarter inch bracing on the 35s gives more boom for the bucks but who in their right mind can turn down an hd-28. Just pay the piper and keep all three.
Were it me: I would never let that HD-35 out of my life; that's a keeper. Between the D-35 and the HD-28? I'd take the HD-28 and hate myself for having to choose. I've only parted with one guitar in my life as a trade-in for a different guitar. Yes, I prefer a more wide-open sound. Now, what your reaction was? It sounded to me like the D-35 and HD-35 are the two instruments that would serve you best. Were it me, I would find a way to keep all three.
What an invaluable video. I don’t have much money; and have wanted a Martin dread for over 25 years. This video helped me decide more than any other. Thank you. I ordered a HD35 and it’ll arrive in less than a month!!!! Four year payment plan, ha; but I’m 40 and just got diagnosed with Carpel Tunnel (mild) so if I don’t get my dream guitar now, I’m not getting any younger. Btw, which did you choose??!
What gauge strings and type did you have on these guitars? Excellent demo. I believe you are correct- maybe the first presentation of these models and their differences and similarities. Glad I found your channel.
I just got an HD28 earlier today. New from the factory. Had it shipped, so no hands-on time beforehand. Love the neck! Sounds amazing - as you would expect. But! A few hours later, I was casually rubbing a 'fingerprint' with my thumb, when I realized that it wasn't a fingerprint. And then with better light, I started looking at it more closely and man, there were areas all over the place where you could see the distinctive look of a 2" polisher that sat too long (my assumption) in one place. No way, no matter how it sounds, am I going to accept it. However, I was also disappointed in the tone of it. Felt like it was/is flubby (given my heavier strumming style) and lacked/lacks the sustain I wanted. Having compared a bunch of RUclips videos, including this one, I've decided that the D-35 is the sound I have in my head, and that's what I just bought. Haven't sent the 28 back yet, but I will tomorrow. D-35 is the most balanced to my ears (brain?). Sure, the HDs are true to their nature, and are brighter, but I don't think they punch as hard. In a band mix with electronics, I think any one of these could be eq'd to compensate - with the exception of the attack.
Strumming I liked the HD-35, D-35 then HD 28 the best...fingerpicking exact reverse..so I guess I like the D-35 the best if I had to choose one...maybe the 2 HDs if I could have 2...one for picking and one for strumming. I'm a singer/songwriter.
Thanks for the video. I have played each one in a store but not at the same time. But I also added a D28 to the mix. Both the HD stand out to me. I did play a CS35 and if I was rich, it would be home with me. But since I cannot get the CS35 I have ordered a new HD35. Hope to have it in another month of so.
Hey man.. very nice video!! Even though this was recorded a while back if you should see this comment I'm curious which guitars you decided to keep. (If you dont mind sharing) I've been watching tons and tons of videos of both the D35 and the HD-35.. most of the time I've preferred the D35.. but I think I like your HD-35 a little better. I could never make the decision that you're having to make. Hahah!! So for the last like 20 years I've only played Gibson acoustics. I guess you could even call me a Gibson snob or Gibson homer. Lol!! I wouldn't ever allow myself to believe I could like a Martin. Although I was always secretly curious about a D35. That 3 piece back is gorgeous!! I've owned several, several Gibson acoustic guitars but I'm pretty much fed up with Gibson!! They're so hit and miss now and the quality is just bad. Someone who is going to spend thousands of dollars on a guitar shouldn't have to worry if they're going to get a good Gibson or a mediocre, dull, lifeless guitar. So I've made the decision that I'm making the switch. I'm done with Gibson and currently on the hunt for a newer D35.
Got an update... 4 days ago I got a 2010 Martin D-35!! Its in absolutely Brand New, Unplayed, Completely Mint Condition.. it was bought brand new in 2010, a guy bought it for his young son and for whatever reason his son wanted a Taylor instead.. so he went and bought him a Taylor.. he still had this brand new D-35 and it NEVER got played.. its unbelievable!! So basically the wood got to age for 10 years without being played.. the tone is just incredible!! I definitely won't be playing any of my Gibsons anytime soon.. lol! 🤘
Like having three friends. They are different but each has something to offer. You'd miss each of them, so how do you choose? The one that makes you happiest, the one that's most useful or the one that is the most rounded? Why sell any of them?
The HD-28 is a keeper for sure, and either 35 would be a good choice, but you seem to be especially partial to the D-35, so I would sell the HD-35 if I were you
Hey bro would you go with a Taylor 814ce or that series of Taylor spruce tops or the Martin HD283e? I asked reps at sweetwater and GC and they both say they would go with the Taylor 414 and up models over the boxy more muffled sounding Martin. I was all set to get a Martin cause I own a few Taylor’s and then they hit me with that. I really want a spruce top because I have a Koa and mohagany top Taylor 324ce and Koa mini. Thoughts? Thanks.
Taylors are for sure overrated! They’re good instruments but everyone plays them. Over the years I’ve had the 110e, 310ce, 710ce, and two Big Baby T’s. They are nice guitars. If you like the glassy sound that’s what they do. Taylors are best with the spruce top, it’s like the Big Mac at McDonalds, it’s their specialty. But you’ll sound like everyone else. I got bored. I bought my first Martin and never looked back. The Martin catalog has plenty to offer, without sounding like the “Taylor cliche” imo. Only price point I’d pick a Taylor over a Martin is under $1,000 new. The HPL is too unstable for my liking. An intermediate player could cover a LOT of bases with a DX and a Big Baby - BOTH record exceptionally well.
I'd also like to add that I've been here for 1 and a half years. Chasing tail I think they call it. I had 8 or more guitars and just played side by side and never progressed as much as I could have done. In my opinion and from what I'm getting from what your saying is that you cant beat a straight braced guitar mostly. Better in the mids and crisper and more focused and punchy. I bet if you had a d28 and that d35 you would just settle and let them grow old with you and they will open up very nicely
I’ve been listening to a lot of videos on RUclips comparing the D28 to the D35, but this is great! I like the HD35 the best. The chords sound the best on the HD 35. I thought the only difference between the HD 35 and the D35 was the binding. Great video!
@@TheJoshSchneider D 35 and HD 35 has 1/4 brace, HD 35 is scalped. 1/4 brace will make more volume and deep while still more balance. Also the brace is shifted forward. He should get rid of his wife and keep all the guitars. lol
Hey bro, I have seen your video a few times and I was wondering what you decided to sell or keep and if you still have all 3 do you want to sell one of the 35's? I have the hd-28. I have a lot of Martins but not a 35 and I love a bound fretboard.
I played quite a few Dreads recently to finally buy a Martin (D-18, 28, 35, 41 and HD 28 and 35) and settled on the HD-35 myself. I feel the scalloped bracing makes it more responsive and bass more textured (it's still a cannon). I also changed the strings to D'Addario 80/20 (exp) and felt it opened it up a lot more than straight phosphor. I also feel like we are splitting hairs on these. No one would kick you off stage or out a of a studio if you showed up with any of these. I also prefer binded fret boards when possible. Also remember all guitars will sound a little different because of wood and aging etc. PS- If I were to get a D-35 I'd get the Johnny Cash model, it's great in all black and only has his signature in the 20th fret so it isn't obnoxious like many sig models.
After having owned a D-28 and now a HD-35, the 28s are more defined tonally with a very warm clear bottom and articulate focused highs. The HD-35 I now own is more open throughout with a bottom end boom but is not nearly as defines and focused. The bottom although having a good rumble, get a little muddy though and is not focused as well.I really miss my D-28.HD-35 is still a really good guitar separate from the flagship that is the iconic sounding D-28.
Hi. You shouldn't have to apologise for your weight as there should be no one to look and judge. Your a good guy and very kind and can play guitar. My suggestion..if you still have them...is to just have the d35 and buy a d28 however the hd28 and the d35 sound great and more apart then the hd35...too sloppy is the hd35 for me. Would be good to know what you decided. Take care and hope your safe in all what's going on
I've played some older HD35s (pre reimagined) and IMO, it had too much bass that covers up the mids and trebles. They're not a balanced guitar by any means. And its the polar opposite of what the old standard D28s used to be where they tend to focus more on the mids and trebles but overtime, the old D28s seem to age well compared to older HD35s. But thats just my preference. Many people like them and every guitar might suit some more than others.
Just because I'm rich and have many vintage Gibson's and Martin's and also about 20 custom shop relic fenders (of all description) people dont realise that I still only have room for maybe 100 guitars at my albeit large house, and have to choose very carefully what I buy. I guess in some ways I'm lucky as I have both of these guitars, I actually prefer the 000-28 though if I'm honest, and probably even prefer a Gibson Hummingbird or even a big standard Gibson J45. Well done btw for owning such nice guitars, can't you just buy both?
Those pickups killed those guitars sound. A d35 and hd35 has more vol. and deep bass tone. Do to the 1'4 bracing. Compared to the d28 and hd28. stop playing over the sound hole, and play behind the sound hole. you will great better sound and tone. .
Thanks for the suggestions but I prefer the sounds I get, it has worked well for me for 15 years, I don't care for the treble bite behind the sound hole.
zerosoma33 You get a brighter sound towards the bridge and a darker sound towards the fret board. He plays right in the center which is on the back edge of the sound hole. You get the most even toned sound there.
Better sound and tone? Maybe for you but some of us dont like hearing tight sounding, sustain lacking tones when you play close to the bridge. You play the way you play and let him play the way he plays.
@@zerosoma33 I agree and play in the same area you play. Not only the treble bite, but you can kiss your sustain and overtones goodbye when you play close to the bridge.
@@zerosoma33 No play on inlay and hole not on the bridge. Right at inlay and edge of hole is sweet spot. That makes it more balanced. Over hole is mushy and weak no punch.
You are a decent player. And you can get a lot better. Lose some weight for your health and you are in good shape. Pun intended. Losing weight is hard(learning guitar is a LOT harder), but less quantity of food. Really.
Thanks for making this video! It’s awesome! Man, I just can’t get over the HD 35 to my ears, the harmonic content is amazing.!
You are an ass… who the fuck do you think you are… you act like you are somebody..

i purchased the HD-35 . played it for a few weeks. exchanged it for an HD-28. couldn't be happier
Dude that D35 sounds the best to me ! That opening strum has you hooked the other two are cool but the original D35 has the perfect tone
Thank you so much for this test. I send this link to a friend which have to decide between D-35 and HD-35. It helps a lot
Keep the D-35, sell off the other two and get a D-18. That's my advice.
You are an ass… who the fuck do you think you are… you act like you are somebody..
you are nothing but shit… go fuck yourself if you know how … and continue being the nobody you have always been.
#1 D35 #2 HD28 #3 HD35 the HD 35 is way to mushy bassy sounding the HD 28 is a bit too muddy as well. The D35 is the best of these.

Love the HD-35. Why 1/2 step down?
The HD-28 is a keeper for sure, and either 35 would be a good choice, but you seem to be especially partial to the D-35, so I would sell the HD-35 if I were you
Super helpful!
Hi! Can I ask if what brand of strings and string gauge are you using? Which of the three guitars did you manage to keep? Many thanks! 👍
Great review.....Thanks!!!
Keep the HD-35 and 28. Nuff said
Very Nice Video. They all sound so beautiful. Just wondering which one did you keep? Take care and Stay Safe! ;-)
If forced to choose I would keep the two HD models. The notes are more articulate on these models.
Just curious, what are the years of these masterpieces?!
D35 is a 2016, HD35 is a 2009, and the HD28 is a 2012 :)
He should get rid of his wife and keep all the guitars. lol
I suggest definitely keeping the HD-35 and D-28 and letting the D-35 go.
I would keep the HD35 sell the other two Rosewoods and pick up a D18
The Cash model has an Engleman Spruce top and thats the main reason its different from almost all other Martins.
What year were these guitars?
that tone at 15:28 made me choose which is the best
HD35 is probably your oldest and has your attachment. Hard decision to which one to sell. I think you will sell D35.
Great video!!!!!!
Hey man, nice compare. Curious as to string gauge and why you’re tuned down, if you don’t mind saying
D35 is the better sound of the 3.
Hope it helps
After having owned a D-28 and now a HD-35, the 28s are more defined tonally with a very warm clear bottom and articulate focused highs. The HD-35 I now own is more open throughout with a bottom end boom but is not nearly as defines and focused. The bottom although having a good rumble, get a little muddy though and is not focused as well.I really miss my D-28.HD-35 is still a really good guitar separate from the flagship that is the iconic sounding D-28.
Regular d-35, best, to my ear.
Hey Zero,
What gauge strings are you running on these guitars?
Thanks
12-54
It is not the 3 peice back man that gives the d35s their sound and characteristics. D35s have thinner bracing under the top.
The hd28 is by far the best sound out their bar none that is the new hd28 RE- imagined standard
What strings are on these?
I played a d28 and HD28 and the D was like twice the volume.
The HD28 and the D35 sound the best to me
same here. can't decide between the two...i know, i nice problem to have. but still...
I have both, and can confirm they are both great.
Take care and hope your safe in all what's going on
Do a reg d 28 review also with it PLEASE
Im in this same decision making u are
HD35 sounded the best…fuller and more bass for sure..
So . . . What did you decide to do ? Let me guess . . . You still have all three
Sell all three and buy a Bourgeois D Vintage Deluxe
It might take all the money you get for all 3 to actually by the Bourgeois D Vintage Deluxe.....However, it might be worth it....
Perfect …HD it is ….
Which one did you get rid of?
My guess is he sold the HD 35
D35 all the way!
Well done btw for owning such nice guitars, can't you just buy both?
hd-28 wins
Really.
D35 is the best sounding . The HD35 is over saturated. HD is best for a warm sound with good articulation also.
