  • The aorta is the largest artery in the body, responsible for carrying oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Aortic diseases occur due to various factors such as ageing, high blood pressure, genetic predisposition, and lifestyle choices, leading to structural abnormalities or weaknesses in the aorta. Let us hear Dr Rachit Saxena, Senior Consultant, Cardiac and Aortic Surgery at Narayana Hospital, Gurugram talk about the types of aortic diseases.
    Types of Aortic Diseases
There are three types of aortic diseases posing serious risks to cardiovascular health.
    1. Aortic Dissection
It is a medical emergency characterized by a tear in the inner layer of the aorta, causing blood to flow between the layers and potentially leading to a separation of the artery walls. This can obstruct blood flow to vital organs or cause the aorta to rupture, resulting in life-threatening complications.
Causes: High blood pressure, genetic connective tissue disorders (e.g., Marfan syndrome), trauma, and certain medical conditions like atherosclerosis.
    2. Aortic Aneurysm
It refers to an abnormal bulge or swelling in the wall of the aorta, typically caused by weakening of the artery wall due to factors such as high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, or genetic predisposition. Aneurysms can occur anywhere along the aorta and may lead to rupture if left untreated, which can be fatal.
Causes: Atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, genetic factors (such as family history of aneurysms), smoking, and inflammation of the aorta (vasculitis).
    3. Obstructive Aortic Disease
This disease encompasses conditions where the normal flow of blood through the aorta is impeded or obstructed. This can include aortic stenosis (narrowing of the aortic valve), coarctation of the aorta (narrowing of the aorta), or other structural abnormalities that hinder blood flow.
Causes: Congenital defects (such as aortic coarctation), atherosclerosis diseases, aortic stenosis, and aortic thrombosis.
