Playing this game was one of the best gaming experiences I have ever had. I was completely unspoiled of the game including the existence of the timeskip or Dimitri's transformation. I played Blue Lions first, then Black Eagles and finally Golden deer and I feel that this order gives the best experience of the games overall story. You first got the emotional rollercoaster with Dimitri and his quest for revenge, then you see the war from the other side in Black Eagles which makes the conflict more morally gray and finally you take an adventure with Claude to uncover the secrets of the world and defeat the true enemy of Fodlan. Also My choice to not recruit students from the other houses really enhanced the experience and made the story much more impactful and heart wrenching. All the characters are so great and having to see them fight against each other to the death is so tragic. My favorite game of 2019. Also Blue Lions is the best house and route and Dimitris and Dedues death in Black Eagles is the saddest moment in the game.
See I disagree. I played black eagles first and while it was definitely not my favorite, I thought being forced to follow your student or the church and being given a choice that completely changes the game was sick.

Ngl, snagging AK and FK on the dedicated mages isn't a bad idea. It's an easy class to certify for, and they really appreciate the Defense adjustment, and armored blow. Lysithea that can just eat attacks is hilarious.
The big thing about Cindered Shadows I like that nobody really touches upon, is the extra dialog the Ashen Wolves and people in Abyss add to every chapter in all routes. It's a really cool thing to look forward to on a replay.
The Blue Lion route is so bizarre... because it's like, purely Blue Lion Vs Edelgard. Claude is BARELY relevant to it. AND THE CHURCH IS JUST FORGOTTEN ABOUT. It's the ONE route that tells you the LEAST about the games lore, and yet it's the most structured.
It's not that much harder on Maddening. Most of the enemies are Monsters and breaking the barrier of a wolf on Normal is exactly as easy as doing it on Maddening. This makes the paralogue simple if you have somewhat competent units.
Yes, but the monsters are much stronger on maddening, so a monster coming in from the the Fog of War will often suprise attack one of your mages. The wolves also have 6 movement, so they can sneak up on you quite easily. And to top it all off, there are phantom soldiers that will attack Marriane even if she is in the range of Maurice. You can, at least in my experiences, only move her to a certain few tiles to not be hit by anything, and since her archetype is a mage, she will almost definitely be doubled and will take major damage from any physical attacks (wolves, that sniper, etc.)
Ngl, I thought that was one of the easier maps in maddening. Torching your way to Marianne to avoid the Wolves range was simple and then just gathering everyone for a stride and one turning Maurice. Although its better to try to take a couple of wolves and beast out as they give some really good Exp. The maddening map that I just hate and was hell was Bernie's and Petras. Hated Hubert just 1 shotting one of my units with meteor and had to surround the Top right corner to be able to take him out in player phase. Also the multiple commander's was just annoying.
An interesting thing I found is if you end up having Hanneman and Lysethia in the same house and max out their support, his crest research finds a way to reverse the effects of the experiments on her, allowing her to live a normal life and she actually continues his research after his death. If you get the S support with her and Byleth, he also finds a way to undo her shortened lifespan but I find Hanneman's way more interesting. He also has really good support witu Marianne since her crest is a driving force in why she is the way she is.
Pairing her with Linhardt also means she is saved because, like Hanneman, he finds a way to remove them. Plus, it's just so cute to have the contrasting mages as a couple.
BTW "Hegemon" means supreme leader. It's fitting that if you follow the Black Eagles Edelgard route that you get the title "Wings of Hegemon" and if you fight Edelgard she becomes the "Hegemon"
Pearse Molloy calling ending racism idealistic and naive is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. And also that’s one of Dimitri’s goals too and gets partially accomplished in Ashe and Dedue’s paired ending
Choosing Edelgard's route as a first playthrough might sound tempting, but it cuts off so much of the experience. It's not a route meant for your first play at all.
Eh not really. Edelgard's route was what I went down first at launch and I was quite pleased with it despite it feeling a bit rushed. I then played Blue Lions and Golden Deer for their stories in that order, and I was still able to appreciate what they did differently (expected six routes as well oof, but it makes sense in not having that much) I then started going for a church playthrough with the Ashen Wolves, but I honestly hated Rhea too much, and fed Edelgard all my stat items, to care and went Crimson Rose a second time so Edelgard can kill Rhea and see Constance promote her family name through capitalism.
@@TurbulentEitri I've always felt like people that played Black Eagles first will forever have a different take that departs the most from the other two routes, I went in wanting to play that route first but I figured if I did that I would do very little to care for the other 2 routes, so I went Golden Deer, and I felt like GD BL BE is the best way to play it because more and more story lore gets revealed in that order, by the time I got to BE I was like " wow she didn't even bring up Dimitri and her time there all that much " but its like, damn if she only knew, if she had only opened up, anyway, great game lmao
I would agree But at the same time knowing her BEFORE the other routes makes her a way more compelling character/antagonist Also half the problems that people have with her comes from not knowing her and after playing two/three routes a lot of people don't even bother trying to understand her
Honestly, anyone looking to play this game for the first time should pick the blue lions first. The flame emperor reveal has the biggest impact in this route, but only if you go in unspoiled. The progress of Dimitri throughout the second half, coming back from the brink, holding out a hand for edelgard, it was excellent! The other routes are great for a second or third playthrough to expand the lore and to answer the questions regarding twsitd and why edelgard does what she does.
Absolutely. Playing Blue Lions First and Black Eagles route last was definitely an amazing experience and made the game a top 3 on Switch. The way the story is structured is just amazing
I feel like all routes have their merit for a first play through. SPOILERS FOR BLACK EAGLE ROUTE: Black Eagles was my first playthrough and I’d say the Flame Emperor reveal is equally as impactful in that route if not more so because, at least for me, I LOVED Edelgard, I wanted to S support her, I had become so close with her and worked so hard to train her, and then she betrayed me and I truly FELT that betrayal. It was personal to me. I hadn’t talked to her before the battle so I didn’t even have the option to go CF (blind playthrough and all) so she became my mortal enemy from that point forward. It’s a different experience because the betrayal feels much more personal when she was your student vs. when she was just another lord. Yes it’s personal to Dimitri and can therefore be personal to you as you feel for him but it’s just different when it’s you. /SPOILERS Golden Deer is also a great first play through because it gives you so much information about Byleth, the goddess, the relics, etc. All that history stuff which you don’t get from the other routes so it means when you go back through you have much more understanding than you would have otherwise. I almost wish I picked GD first for this reason but the Flame Emperor reveal was just too good with Black Eagles. Blue Lions is, in my opinion, the best route overall and the certainly the most emotionally impactful. The cutscene at the end between Dimitri and Edelgard is so heartbreaking and beautiful. The music really makes it a punch in the gut. Also the scene where you see Dimitri for the first time post time skip is another heartbreaking scene where the music just adds to it perfectly. Same music I think as well and it’s perfect for both scenes. Anyway, yes, I think they are all great routes and all work/make sense for a firth play through for different reasons so in that sense, you can’t go wrong. Sorry this is long, I have a lot of feelings.
@@rhettmitchell Because that would require playing the correct route and apparently that's spoilers. I think. Maybe people just got too used to TWSITD.

This has got to be one of my top 20 games, maybe even top 10. I just wish it got a bit more time to distinguish the routes and their plotlines a bit more. Azure Moon obviously got the most investment in its writing, Crimson Flower got the most unique maps, Verdant Wind is the only one that really makes the lore clear (and has the coolest final battle), and Silver Snow is just... there, sharing all the maps that VW has.
I echo the same thoughts as you, but to be fair to the developers how else do the they get you play the other routes other than to withhold certain aspects of the storyline and characters depending on which house you choose? 🤷🏻♂️
@@Ryodraco Not to mention that while the route's idea is cool, the fact it doesn't exist in a vacuum means losing Edelgard & Hubert while getting nothing unique in return hurts it a ton when compared to AM and (especially) VW.
Dude, you handled this majesticly. I felt this as a genuine love letter to the game. "Siriusly" thank you. I watched the whole thing in one sit, cuz your editing is hilarius.
Wait couldn't we have just did a rewind to save Rodrigue? It didn't work to save Jeralt because of us being stopped by someone with magic. We could have saved him but oh well Dimitri needed to get out of his edgy emo phase one way or another lol
I headcanon that Byleth used up all her divine pulses trying to save the lives of the students during the battle (even if you didn't during the gameplay)
I am on my 6th playthrough and I never thought about that!!!!! I think that's because I was subconsciously convinced from earlier in the game (by not being able to save Jeralt) that it didn't occur to me to question him dying. I was also really too busy being mad that somehow Rodrigue was able to get off his horse in time to take that hit to even consider divine pulse as an option.
I really just spent the last 20 minutes searching through Pokémon cries to find out which one was played at 22:46 only to play the video for 5 MORE SECONDS and realize it was a gastly pun. Bruh
Sweet lord, I am in love with this game. I am currently in my fourth playthrough and will go the CoS route. My order was GD, BE, and then BL. I thought the GD route was incredible (God Shattering Star FTW), but the story on the BL route definitely hit me the hardest. Unfortunately, the BE route was a bit too short, as I wish you could have actually played to defeat TWSITD, instead of just learning about their defeat in a cutscene. Thanks for this massive video!
I’m at 500+ hours in this game. I’ve played every route multiple times and I still come back to it. I’ll never tire of that Fire Emblem gameplay that just makes my brain so happy
Black eagles was the most popular team at the start, whenever the game showed you the most used characters the top 4 was always edelgard, dorothea, bernadetta and petra >:(
It's a damn shame that despite being the most marketed as the technical 'first' house the Black Eagles got completely screwed over. Significantly shorter route than literally the others, treated as a 'secret' route even tho SIDING WITH YOUR HOUSE LEADER SHOULD BE THE DEFAULT, the two prominant empire generals Rndolph nd Ladislava get STILL get killed off when they could have easily been new units to make up for lost church ones, and while the other houses get to have a field day with their relics the Black Eagles get jack shit side from Edelgard's Technically-Not-Actually-A-Relic. Okay maybe I went a bit overboard there, but as someone who started with Black Eagles the slow realization over the next two routes that BE players got completely fucked over did not sit well with me. Like I can't be the only one who feels it's a little BS that BE players get the short end of the stick. While BL and GD players get tons of chapters BE players can only get a basically near carbon copy of GD route at the cost of their own damn house leader & retainer if they want a route of the same length.
@@Apolleh Technically, they developed Silver Snow first before they did Golden Deer, but I see what you mean. Also, on the topic of Crimson Flower being the shortest of the routes, it actually turns out that there were no initial plans to create it. Because a lot of playtesters who picked the Black Eagles wanted to side with Edelgard, the devs added in the CF route during the later stages of 3H's development. Being that the route was incredibly rushed because of it (I mean, we never fight TWSITD despite getting more buildup towards them in CF than in any other route), making the Black Eagles the most advertised house probably wasn't a good idea in hindsight-
I played this over a year ago, and I actually started with blue lions. I went into this blind with no FE games before, and lemme just say the full emotional impact of Dimitri's trauma post timeskip hit me so, so hard. I didn't know timeskip was a thing, so when I saw him just sitting amongst the corpses, a shell of his former self, it really broke my heart. Well done FE, I still remember that feeling today.
What perfect timing. I just recently bought and started playing fire emblem three houses 3 days ago. But I guess i'l come back to this video once im finished with the game to avoid spoilers
Considering you played Black Eagles very early on, I guess that means you’ve never played with Jeritza yet, meaning you haven’t seen his supports with Mercedes.
I was *close* to choosing Black Eagles as my first play through but ended up choosing Blue Lions instead and MAN I’m happy I did them as my first play through, their story was really good.
@@Qballiz2kool Blue lions is my 2nd playthrough, and has been great so far. I'm almost to the time skip where things will get really exciting, but I keep getting distracted with other games. I beat the DLC after I beat the Black Eagles route.
One thing that would have helped for me is if either part 1 changed a lot more depending on your house, or if the routes split earlier. Or if like in FATES there was no difference because you don't choose until the split, so that there would be less replaying the same missions with only slightly different story for the first half of the game.
In my opinion, Verdant Wind (aka Golden Deer) was the overall best route of the game. It's pretty much the only route that answers every important question, the cast has great chemistry together, you get way more lore than in other routes, and the maps are in my opinion easily the best the game has to offer. Plus, Lysithea, Lorenz and Hilda are easily some of my favorite characters. EDIT: 2 years later, I gotta admit I'm leaning towards the Blue Lions now. I still love the Golden Deer, but the Blue Lions just tells a much more interesting (if less complete) story, and I overall feel like it's the route that does the best job at actually matching the theme of the game. Plus, the fact that both Claude and Rhea are able to get their happy endings too is a huge bonus for me.
I find it the most satisfying overall. It could be its own, self-contained game, meanwhile the others kind of leave you wondering "WTH happened?". But all routes have their pros and cons imo (but only one has Claude ;))
I disagree because Verdant Wind was basically silver snow with Claude and friends shoved into it, wish it was more unique and had conflicts that made more sense for Claude.
Dobadobadooo Nah, the downfall of verdant snd is the fact that none of the characters have any agency at all. Verdant wind doesn’t have anything to do with Edelgard’s war so the second have been focused on it feels out of place. It also doesn’t help that claudes goals have nothing to do with said war or rescuing Rhea so it feels like I’m forced to do this because that’s what has to happen
I played the routes in this order church route, blue lions, golden deer, Edelgard. Thanks for spreading how awesome the game is. I enjoyed Edelgards the most

Most of the new content with the Ashen Wolves is actually what they add to the main game. The DLC allows you to explore the sewers for the entire story (which includes new dialogue with the 4 characters, gatekeeper, and NPCs, as well as new gameplay options like the pagan statue and crystal ball), alongside new paralogue quests and supports that provide more lore and character development.
Yeah and in the golden deer Route Dimitri does nothing. The only characters that’s relevant to every route is Edelgard
Church teamed up with the Kingdom Army when Byleth returned
Because Blue lions is a character type story while golden deer is an adventure type story

If you thought Marianne's paralogue was 'really cool', then you did not play that map on maddening. That was absolute torture.
Literally made me hate Marianne for a little bit 🤣
Dude yes one of the worst maps
Pairing her with Linhardt also means she is saved because, like
Hanneman, he finds a way to remove them.
Usually it's easy to catch as hegemonic, because hegemon sounds like a Digimon.
Edlegard now rules North Korea.

Whoops... that’s the only route I’ve ever played 0>0
Yeah blue lions was my first route, then golden deer, church route and now I'm finally playing edelgards route😂
Eh not really. Edelgard's route was what I went down first at launch and I was quite pleased with it despite it feeling a bit rushed.
I then played Blue Lions and Golden Deer for their stories in that order, and I was still able to appreciate what they did differently (expected six routes as well oof, but it makes sense in not having that much)
I then started going for a church playthrough with the Ashen Wolves, but I honestly hated Rhea too much, and fed Edelgard all my stat items, to care and went Crimson Rose a second time so Edelgard can kill Rhea and see Constance promote her family name through capitalism.
I would agree
But at the same time knowing her BEFORE the other routes makes her a way more compelling character/antagonist
Also half the problems that people have with her comes from not knowing her and after playing two/three routes a lot of people don't even bother trying to understand her
Honestly, anyone looking to play this game for the first time should pick the blue lions first.
SPOILERS FOR BLACK EAGLE ROUTE:
Black Eagles was my first playthrough and I’d say the Flame Emperor reveal is equally as impactful in that route if not more so because, at least for me, I LOVED Edelgard, I wanted to S support her, I had become so close with her and worked so hard to train her, and then she betrayed me and I truly FELT that betrayal.
/SPOILERS
Golden Deer is also a great first play through because it gives you so much information about Byleth, the goddess, the relics, etc.
B-But that requires spending time with Dimitri as a character.

Silver Snow's issue was that it was the original route conceived, and thus ended up with fewer things unique to it.
@@Ryodraco Not to mention that while the route's idea is cool, the fact it doesn't exist in a vacuum means losing Edelgard & Hubert while getting nothing unique in return hurts it a ton when compared to AM and (especially) VW.

26:15 even whilst fleeing Dimitri's icy wrath, Byleth had to turn around because "must pick up all shiny dropped artifacts!"
Black eagles was the most popular team at the start, whenever the game showed you the most used characters the top 4 was always edelgard, dorothea, bernadetta and petra >:(
Probably because they were literally the first team you meet
And because you also have to choose BE to play through Silver Snow so they get played with literally twice as often
Being that the route was incredibly rushed because of it (I mean, we never fight TWSITD despite getting more buildup towards them in CF than in any other route), making the Black Eagles the most advertised house probably wasn't a good idea in hindsight-
It's the house with the best waifu's. You can't blame us.
I played this over a year ago, and I actually started with blue lions. I went into this blind with no FE games before, and lemme just say the full emotional impact of Dimitri's trauma post timeskip hit me so, so hard.
Best Story: Verdant Wind
Best Character Development: Azure Moon
Best Maps (Sadly in the end): Crimson Flower, the final map is crazy
I disagree because Verdant Wind was basically silver snow with Claude and friends shoved into it, wish it was more unique and had conflicts that made more sense for Claude.
Dobadobadooo Nah, the downfall of verdant snd is the fact that none of the characters have any agency at all. Verdant wind doesn’t have anything to do with Edelgard’s war so the second have been focused on it feels out of place. It also doesn’t help that claudes goals have nothing to do with said war or rescuing Rhea so it feels like I’m forced to do this because that’s what has to happen
CookieStew wrong silver snow is like verdant wind. Not the other way around.
I played the routes in this order church route, blue lions, golden deer, Edelgard. Thanks for spreading how awesome the game is. I enjoyed Edelgards the most

The DLC allows you to explore the sewers for the entire story (which includes new dialogue with the 4 characters, gatekeeper, and NPCs, as well as new gameplay options like the pagan statue and crystal ball), alongside new paralogue quests and supports that provide more lore and character development.
