People let their boilers get into that state because of how much it costs to get a boiler replaced. They greatly underestimate how dangerous it can be.
RaxxHubNut in my experience and the experience of those around me, if it was the difference between a £2 roll of gaffer tape or a £6-700 boiler, the gaffer tape would win for the type of person who has a boiler in a state such as the one in this video. So l disagree.
Here in the states soft solder is prohibited for use on copper gas lines and recently they just stopped selling gas press fittings for copper ( something about the O-ring not passing a national standards test ). So it's back to brazing and using flare fittings on soft copper.

The TV was in danger of overheating then catching fire, even without the gas fire on. How they survived I don't know. It had been there for months. The man who lived there did it being unable to understand that it was lethal. The gas fire was isolated. Apparently he reconnected it. Idiots are idiots. They will do what they want to do.

I recently replaced an expansion vessel on a Vokera Hydra which according to customer was 18 years old, it was in great shape for its age, think it’ll last another few years no problem. We are also replacing a lot of Vokera Maxins but mainly because the parts are becoming obsolete, if the parts were readily available they would also still be going no problem.
Hi Alan first pipework leak obviously not had any of the flux cleaned off it . Which could have contributed to the leak .Ideal did a version of that concord where a fan sat on top of the boiler and then into a conventional flue That burner was notorious for sooting on the conventional boiler as it was not easy to clean ,we used to wash them out in warm soapy water and then with fresh which did the trick or it was a new burner.
The old Ideal WRS and Concorde......the only boiler that goes supersonic when it falls off a wall. I saw one go clean through a worktop as the wall fixings had failed and it was only held on by the flow and return......and when they were cut.....off it went, but it wasn't me.....!!
I’m a Worcester engineer, you can tell who has them serviced every year and who doesn’t, some appliances are in a really poor state. Good that the message is being put out there to make people aware. Would you run a car for 10 years without changing the oil or checking the water? Same principle with your boiler😊
We go to some that are only 3-4 years old which are really clogged up. Important thing is not to oversize the boiler because it won’t modulate down enough to start condensing which should strip the oxide off the heat exchanger ( in theory), then go through the trap to waste. That’s why it’s so important to clean condensate traps, first thing I check👍🏻
@@paulkelly3254 We have a new Estate near us and they have installed 40 kw combis in all the houses, Some of them have about 5kw heat loss, Boiler just go on and back off again. Crazy. 👍
Madness. If it was a CDI or a Life/Style you can put the heat output down to suit, but I’d say only 10% of lads do that, manufacturers are trying to get low rate modulation down to 10% of total net output as the boiler heat exchangers are knackered in 5 years or so because they get hammered. Does the Isar spring to mind?😆
@@paulkelly3254 Pointless spending all that money on a boiler that you can not even use. Then they have actually made the system worse. Good to hear about the Worcester.

Not trashing anyone just pointing out an honest observation. I still can't believe that nat gas is installed in CU in The UK. The copper I see they use tends to be a softer grade as I see plumbers on these videos from The UK bending 3/4" pipe by hand so you can imagine how easy a nail could pop a hole in it . Most homes tend to not have basements so the cu seems to be run under floor board, behind walls etc. Perfect candidate for a accidental stray nail or go undetected until a good volume is leaked out to living space. In Canada cu is typically used for water lines only and all our cu pipe is hard drawn but most important our gas installs are all in Black Iron pipe. Any leaks and you can unthread and tighten or replace fittings. We are seeing more CSST installs but they tend to be more on the end of the line hook ups. Thanks for the Good video

Some of those boilers are in a right state as you describe as “lethal” and yet government and gas safe is more worried about installation certificates being in place than a framework to identify and rectify these boilers that become lethal with age or tampering in order to maintain ongoing safety of the appliance which is far more important.
Mains carbon monoxide detectors should be mandatory near the boiler, or a part of the boiler is better, that have the mains to the boiler run though to cut the boiler out if the detector activates. But an idiot is an idiot, so he may disconnect it.
John Burns probably best to be part of the boiler. I’m actually surprised to be honest that with all the talk about emissions, and concerns about efficiency and CO that boilers don’t have built in flue gas monitoring capabilities similar to vehicles with lambda sensors that adjust the fuel air mixture and monitor emissions.
How customers allow it to get in such a state, probably vast majority of the time.. money... if somebody can not afford to replace it.. they will take their chances, not as a result of wanting to but necessity.
