the lower surface of the cloud is negatively charged and the upper portion is negatively charged. now when two clouds rubes each other then a huge amount of charge transfer occurs in between the clouds. and if the time constant of this charge transfer is low than a huge amount of current flows between the clouds. this is why we have seen sparking or lightning.

Lightning causes the electrons and protons present in molicules of cloud when the two clouds collapse on each other then these electrons and protons also collaps on each other and the large amount of energy will generated this energy will travel toward ground or transmission line in form of surge
