The story to Redline is actually brilliant. It has NOTHING to do with the race, the real story is how the Princess violates Robo-Worlds sovereignty via the race in order to expose how they have been breaking their treaty and conducting illegal experiments to create sanctioned weapons. If you put together some of the the "filler" scenes that the side characters do, you can see how this is formulated throughout the whole movie. Even the romance, while a bit cheesy, is handled in a way where you can see it's not some spontaneous plot point, but is one that blossomed over time, bordering child-hood friends (which as we all know is a GOATed tag). The writing may not be perfect, but it certainly doesn't hold Redline back from being one of the greatest stand alone anime movies of all time.
I know, when I watched it it was very easy to follow. You host events on your neighbor's lawn without permission, you run the risk of starting a war. Simple as.
@jax napper her magic fits what futurists call "Clarktech" When technology is so advanced, it's indistinguishable from magic. She's from another dimension, so it's not like the galaxy in which roboworld resides can peek into how her magic or tech actually works, so naturally they would just call it magic. Roboworld is what happens when you're losing the arms race on a galaxy wide scale, and still trying to science your way yo the top. The Princess might be exploiting the situation. Especially if magic is commonplace in her world, and there is little regard for primitive "pre-clarktech" dimensions
I hate, and I mean HATE anime as a general rule. I came aware of Redline in October 2019 due to a dumb gif someone posted of the racers in the yellowline race looking at each other. This was in my sim racing community. The gif was fluid beyond what I was used to for anime, and the shading had the dark shadows that was normal for Darkhorse comics, so I took a look. I found out that a giant amount of handcrafted animation went into it compared to most anime, so I gave it a watch. It was 100% EVERYTHING I hated in anime; a plot that had so much complexity that it felt like the story writers were a bunch of autists given a ball of cocaine mixed with Adderall, after drinking an entire handle of your choice of hard liquor. It kept getting dumber, more unhinged, weirder and psychotic to where less and less made sense unless it was a story made up by a high as fuck drug addict. IT WAS FUCKING AWESOME!!! JT and cherry girl's final cross of the finish line didn't matter, the whole McGuffin with the amulet thing in the pot stove didn't matter, or the weird war/battle going on between that princess and the robo-guys. It was a work of visual 2d art in motion, a final testament of what hand drawn anime can attempt to achieve. That made it great alone.
I'm glad you are covering this Gem and God I wish more anime had a fraction of the originality this one had. You know it's probably a good anime when they have well drawn noses. Also this man is rocking a better pompadour than Space Dandy.
