Thanks. I am taking a writing degree and have decided to go with Scrivener for my papers and thesis. This tutorial about the Scrivener/Dropbox relationship is very important to my decision.
Thank you. This information is no where on scrivener's page in a basic manner. You were so helpful. QUESTION: If I am working in an area where wifi drops on and off, how do I make sure there is an automatic save to my computer and to dropbox cloud? Thank you!
Hi Geraldine, As long as you are working on a project on your device Scrivener already saves to your hard drive every couple of seconds so you won't lose work. It doesn't actually save to Dropbox, it backs up to Dropbox upon opening project or closing project according to the way you set it in your Preferences on Mac or Settings on Windows. If wifi drops off, simply wait for it to come on again and go to File > Backup Now.
Excellent tutorial. What about if I continue writing on my iPad? Is it the same as with a laptop? Do I download Dropbox to the iPad, open from Scrivener masters folder in DB, and work from there? I imagine it is a slightly different process. I’ll look to see if you explain that in a separate tutorial. Thanks!
Hi Karen, Thank you for the explanation... What if you want to work offline or in a place where there is no internet? Do you suggest something in here?
This was importnt for me. Thank you. Can you save other file formats to cloud, to work on android phone? Android doesn' have scrviener but can open md, txt, docx or rtx.
Agree with the comments on the excellence of the presentation. One thing unclear: how to move all my existing backups from my Mac (or iCloud) to the new Dropbox location? Do I do brute force drag and drop? Also, for Mac users who have iCloud accounts, do they not serve the exact same function as Dropbox is one lives in an all Mac world? Put another way, is there a good reason to use Dropbox instead of iCloud both for a population of existing Scrivener projects and their respective backups?
I AM A BIT LOST AND CONFUSED. I am using the new Scrivener 3 on my PC and I am trying to arrange my backup but the tools manual as you demonstrate does not show up on my screen. But I did find the options window under files…. And noted my backup folder is C:\users\Scand\appdata\local\dropboxupdate is this where my files should be going to be able to use Scrivener????? Here is what i am attempting to do…. I use a PC as my home work computer and my travel computer is an IPAD…. I am trying to be able to via drop box to work on my scrivener products….. that is produce at home on my PC and then as I travel access those work jobs on my IPAD…… BUT IT IS NOT HAPPENING…. WHY?
Hi B.K. Scrivener for Mac and Scrivener for Windows are a bit different because of the different operating systems. This demo was done on Scrivener 3 for Mac. The Scrivener 3 for Windows is in developement and has a much nicer User Interface.
Thank you for that clear and informative tutorial. Can you tell me, if Scrivener is using the document saved to Dropbox what happens if you want to write but have no internet connection, on a plane for example. Does Scrivener create a temporary file to be uploaded to the server when it can, like Google docs, or would you have to save the document back to your laptop for the journey? Thanks for any help.
Hi Fred, Scrivener does not backup to Dropbox when there is no internet connection, but it does save to your computer every few minutes. So if you are on a flight. make sure your default save location is on your hard drive, do your writing, and then when you have landed and have an internet connection, open the project and go to Fole > Backup > Backup now.
@@fred-gambino Hi Fred. Whether you are saving or backing up a project, as long as you have an internet connection it is possible to save or backup to Dropbox in the cloud. If you are not connected you need to redirect the save function to a folder on your computer.
Hi Karen, I work with Scrivener on Windows 11. I like to enlarge the size of letters in the left collum: the Binder part. Can you help me? Thanks, on forehand.
I'm a bit confused. I have written more than a thousand words so I've had the original folder on my computer for some time now. I've only barely created a Dropbox, so I've already changed where to have my backups. However, when I put the project file directly to Dropbox and open it, it comes up empty. All blank pages. Any reason for this?
Hello Larder. For your actual projects you can simply drag them out of your Dropbox folder and into any folder of your choice. Once they are in a folder on your hard drive, Scrivener will save them to that same location from now on. For your backups if you are on Mac go to Scrivener > Preferences > Backup, on Windows go to File > Options> Backup. In thr Backup Location region click on the 'choose' button to pick a different location
I can’t sync my phone and my computer project… I started it on my phone and then followed it up on my computer, now I followed it up on my computer but it won’t sync with my phone, I have an iphone and a windows pc, I don’t understand how to sync them with dropbox…

Thank you. I've been considering using Scrivener, and seeing how to incorporate DropBox (which I already use) has been really helpful.
Very helpful. I was struggling with using dropbox with scrivener. Thanks.
Exactly what I needed today, you've cut what would have taken me hours to sort, into 18minutes and 45seconds. Thank you
