Interview with Beijing Silvermine

  • Two years ago, I posted a video called “How much are you willing to spend for expired films?” On RUclips. The content was to discuss the analog, material and time-sensitive nature of negatives. When they are expired, lost their original color performance, or even failed to produce images, and become commodities that sellers inflate the price of and flaunt a sense of “nostalgia”, then what is the point of purchasing them?
“The accumulation of photography is the result of the interaction between money and time. If you like images, then the “value” of the photos is much higher than the “price”. Don't forget that the seemingly intangible time and effort that can't be counted in money is the most valuable part of photography. As long as the motivation is gone, the negatives are just commodities to be changed by soulless businessmen.”
A few days later, I received an email from the Beijing Silvermine. The letter said: “Our studio is in Paris, so if you want to know more about our project, please contact us”.
When I received the message, I was very excited and surprised. Originally, I learned about “Beijing Silvermine” from an issue of the publication called Voice of Photography (VOP), and I was very impressed by the content of the whole project, and it was incredible that I was able to connect with them through the video. But then I realized that Paris is a very distant place for me, so I wrote back to thank them and quietly forgot about it.
Two years later, when I applied for an exchange student program in Germany, I remembered this unfulfilled invitation, so I met with Thomas Sauvin, the author of Silvermine, at the Arles Photography Festival, and then in his studio in Paris to complete this interview.
For those of you who are interested in the genre of family photography, found photography and vernacular photography, as well as those of you who would like to know more about the Beijing Silvermine project, which has been running for 15 years, I hope that this half-hour interview video will bring you with some ideas.
Last but not least, I would like to thank Thomas Sauvin and the team Beijing Silvermine once again. This video is for all the people who dedicated to photography.

As someone unfamiliar with the Silvermine project, I would love to see more of the work from the project during this interview.
It’s been a long time since I commented on RUclips, and I unexpectedly came across your channel. I find your storytelling through visuals to be very unique, and I’m also interested in your experiences studying in Germany. I hope this comment gives you a bit of encouragement to continue pursuing your goals!
A small suggestion: During interviews, it might be helpful to occasionally intersperse some works from the Silvermine project. This could help viewers who are not familiar with the interviewee form a deeper connection. If you plan to make more interview-style videos in the future, I think you could take some inspiration from Paulie B’s videos.

I think sometimes coincidence would be very interesting, if I didn't have an exchange to Germany, maybe nothing would really happen.
Also I would like to thank for your suggestion, and will definitely watch some videos from Paulie B : )
