Lingyi is blaming himself for the outcome of his concubines but I think his mother is responsible for the calamity that's affecting the Xu family. She's the one that's responsible for him marrying them. I'm glad that Shiyi is by his side. She is exactly what he needs. She has such a good heart.

I wouldn't put all the blame on the mother. Concubine Wen's marriage was the result of a business transaction between their two families, which likely would have been a normal way to form business deals in those days. Concubine Qin, on the other hand, was Lingyi's bedroom maid. In ancient Chinese culture, the simple act of touching an unmarried woman would have been considered improper. In a lot of Chinese period dramas that I've seen if a man did something improper to an unmarried woman he would have been required to take responsibility for her, which usually meant he was required to marry her.
I also think that the Marquis could have taken more of an interest to the other women in his harem than he should have. Granted, he didn't love them and they all had a hidden agenda, but they likely didn't have as much say in this marriage than he did. Women back then didn't have as much freedom as men did and Lingyi was aware of that fact. He initially told Shiyi that she would have accomplished great things "if she were a man". He even thought about removing Shiyi from the Xianling Pavilion because he thought she was being improper.
The reason Shiyi and Lingyi are well suited for each other is because their ambitions align with their interests, but Shiyi is not the only women with ambitions in the harem. Concubine Wen, for instance, has the makings of a successful merchant. When she and the Marquis were eating together, she demonstrated her ability to list prices and her proposal to do business with Shiyi would have been a viable business partnership if she had accepted. Lingyi however hasn't gotten past the impression that the women in his harem are scheming opportunists to notice their talents. When he was dining with Concubine Wen, there could have been two other ways he could have continued their conversation. He could have told her that it wouldn't be fair for him to eat something so expensive when their were people who were struggling to afford a bowl of rice or he could have noted that her ability to memorize prices. Or when he was with Concubine Qin, he left her just because she didn't know the title of the painting hanging in her quarters. The painting was something that caught his interest not hers, and it doesn't seem like he's tried to engage her interests. On top of that, his reasoning for not letting her raise Fengqing is her lack of education, but Concubine Qin was low class and she was sold to the Xu family at a young age, I doubt she was ever given an opportunity for to receive an education.
Lingyi fully supported his wife's work in the Xianling Pavilion, but Shiyi would have pursued her own ambitions whether she had her husband's support or not. The other harem women, however, were more focused on serving the Marquis because that was the role expected of women. The Marquis could have encouraged his concubines to pursue their own success rather than pursue his affections if hadn't been so cold and dismissive towards them.

@@ThePrincessCH Concubine Qin was appointed as Lingyi's bedroom maid by his mother when he was injured in war and in coma, so he didn't have any choice when she was made his Concubine. Concubine Wen was insecure about her son and was more faithful to her native family. If we see Lingyi's character in beginning of the show, he's a tired and frustrated man who neither gets peace at work, nor at home. All women are craving for his attention, urging him to spend nights with them, but there's no one to share his burden, not even his first Legal wife. When I started watching this show, I didn't like him as a hero, as he had multiple wives and kids, and still claimed to lead a loveless life. But as the show progressed, I understood his mindset. His whole family was useless in sharing his load, including his mother, brother and all those legal and illegal wives. On the other hand, he was expected to revenge for his father and elder brother's death. Also, he was expected to keep up his family name and serve the country. In short, he was living like a robot. His emotions were not considered at all. His mother kept on imposing one after another woman over him, adding to his responsibilities, without realizing what he needed. With Shiyi, he started to relax, as she was selfless, independent, brave and intelligent. She didn't crave for his attention and put herself at his feet to sleep with him, which was a shock to him. His curiosity got him closer to her, and after observing her selfless nature, he started to fall for her.
I also felt bad for Concubine Qin, as she was not given an opportunity to raise the kid due to lack of her education. I was thinking, had she borne Lingyi's kid (she miscarried once), wouldn't they let her raise her kid, just because she was uneducated? I mean what has education got to do with motherhood??? 🙄
