Today is #WorldWhaleDay and we at the Whale Sanctuary Project are proud to join in celebrating these beings and all that they represent.
What do whales mean to you? Some are the largest animals ever to grace the planet. Others speak in languages so nuanced that we are only just beginning to understand their complexity. And there are those who can live for over a century.
Yet, for all of their magnificence, there are whales that humans seek to exploit for entertainment. Thousands of whales around the world live confined to the concrete walls of marine parks, never given the opportunity to live freely, to choose how to spend their days.
Whales mean many things to many passionate people, but how often do we consider what being a whale means to the whales themselves?
This World Whale Day marks a pivotal juncture in the arc of humanity’s relationship with whales. Now more than ever we have the opportunity to choose how we want future generations to understand and relate to these animals. For captive whales who cannot survive in the wild, the Whale Sanctuary Project offers an alternative to barren tanks: a coastal sanctuary home where they can experience a natural life as close as possible to that of their wild counterparts, with all of the benefits of a lifetime of human care.
Can we really allow a future that continues to display whales behind glass?
We have a choice to make: Tanks, or tides? Objectification, or respect?
