This is probably the content where Jordan is at his best. Able to break things down in a tourney setting while also talking about his mentality for certain moves or strategies in a given match. The best parts are when he sees himself do something stupid that he clearly forgot happened and is just like "that... that was just bad" 😂
I agree this content made me sub. Love hearing his analysis and how he finds mistakes. He does a good job of breaking things down and I think his content is a lot more relatable than top players who do the same.
Input the desired special move (motion input required) between the charge and charge release frames of down smash. About a 3 frame window (yes it's hard.) It's known as the late kara-cancel. Similar things are from street fighter
So it IS using the negative edge of the A press. Interesting. I figured it would either be that, or using B for the input button overwrites the down smash charge. That's super cool.
2:10 I guess I'll explain tilt cancel aerials, but there are a few things we need to cover first: 1- when performing a tilt with the c-stick, the game processes it as two inputs: a direction with the left stick and an A press, both for one frame (i.e. the c-stick is just a macro) 2- when doing an instant short hop aerial (press A during jumpsquat, i.e. within 3 frames of pressing jump) you will always get a short hop with an aerial attack coming out on the first possible frame, and which aerial you get is determined by the left stick's position *_during the jumpsquat._* 3- this game allows you to cancel tilt attacks with a jump within the first 3 frames of the attack, probably to make the short hop instant aerial shortcut (press A during jumpsquat) more lenient. with that out of the way: tilt cancel aerials are a technique that takes advantage of two things: 1 - instant ahort hop aerials, and 2 - the fact that doing a forward tilt with the c-stick turns you around. when you cancel a forward tilt into a jump while the left stick is in a neutral position, you get a neutral aerial; because even though the c-stick sent a directional input to the game, it was only for one frame and was before the jumpsquat started. combining all this we can dash forward and without ever releasing that forward input, tap the c-stick backwards to sent a tilt attack input to the game, and cancel it with a jump to get a short hop aerial with full forwards momentum but with your character turned around. if you were holding forwards the whole time, that forward input will be what tells the game which way to attack during the jumpsquat, and you'll get a full momentum instant back air.
Hey poppt, got a question. why aren’t the “i entered a tournament with” videos not in a playlist? not a big deal though. keep up the amazing work! love the vids
Haven't played the game in a couple of years but I always mained Roy. I don't think he's THAT much of a mashing character and he's really fun, excited to see how you did :)
Love this format. Watching you comment on your own playstyle and poppin‘ off whenever you get something cool is so entertaining to watch :) (would love to see Incineroar some time soon)
19:50 (sorry in advance for the bad english) Both Shotos can perform this tech called kara-cancel. When you are charging down smash prepare the imput, yes imput, for a special attack. When you release down smash, you have about 4 frames to do the imput (down b doesnt work I think). If you did it correctly the Tatsumaki (side B) will cover more distance and be faster. Sorry if i misspelled something and If someone already explained it. Good luck in your next tournament. love from spain
I don't know if you've made this into a playlist or not yet, but you absolutely should if not! I think it's your most entertaining and rewatchable series (outside of BoTW because it's absolutely top tier lets be honest), and I would love to be able to watch them all again back to back! You've won with so many that's it's hard to keep track of them all now and the ability to watch them all in a row would be awesome ❤️
Something i dont see a lot of people talking about when it comes to roy is his out-of-shield. he has FRAME 4 super armor on his up-b which does 21.1%, an up-smash, which comes out frame 12, scoops both sides, and does 17% without factoring in 1v1 freshness, and basically any aerial of your choosing
When you're doing a downsmash with ryu or Ken between charging and releasing the move, if you do the input for sure you can or hadukin or spin kick, it will cancel that attack into that input. It's called a kara-cancel and I believe it's between 1to 3 frames where it's active to do it
I really appreciate hearing your mentality and strategy in each match, it’s very interesting to hear how a high level player approaches tournament matches. I love this series, great work Poppt!
William did a Kara Cancel. It can be done by using down smash, and then within 4 frames, after releasing it, you input another special. It works with side-b, shaku, hadouken, and shoryu. He did a late Kara tho, so he had less time to do it. If you charge it tho, you can input the next special, while you charge, then release smash, and push A, B, or Grab again. If you do a late kara cancel with tatsu (side-b) you'll get a speed boost, which catches people off guard, and at lower percents you can shaku hover, then kara cancel tatsu boost for some good damage
I don’t know if you take requests but Greninja would be a pretty cool character to see. He has flashy combos but also pretty solid confirms despite not really being seen much
The risk/reward discussion was really cool and useful. I personally tend to struggle with using counters, and never thought about it in terms of "finding situations where it won't be punished even if I'm wrong"
Wasn’t expecting to learn something (especially so soon in the video) but thanks for the explanation on how to do Roy’s jab to back air, I’ve been trying to do it and I wasn’t aware that you’re supposed to buffer the attack before you jump 😅
Honestly, though there hasn’t been as much of an abundance of content on the RUclips lately, I think that the tournament videos as well as the videos focused on the state of competitive smash have been some of your best ever, so I wouldn’t claim that it’s been in any way underwhelming lately, quite the opposite :)
Just wanted to leave a comment saying Ive been loving your content, both here and on the underdogs, recently. Im an Aussie living in the UK and the content really helps with the homesickness 😅
Also, I would love to see your Young Link in tournament play. So that is my suggestion for next tourney but you do you Jordan. Excited to see whoever your next character will be.
Pretty sure that the fireball from down smash is making use of negative edge, basically you hold the downsmash and then input the half circle while still holding the attack button, then after the half circle you release the attack button to shoot the fireball. (negative edge is a mechanic in a few fighting games that basically just lets you attack with release inputs and the fgc characters in smash can utilize it to make combos easier)
Great video. I loved seeing you break down the options you had and what you did. It really helped me see how to think through things. Poppt1 with the big brain
2:09 attack cancel bair is like Ftilt behind with c stick Jump cancels ftilt, keeps attack input So if you put left stick forward you get a bair If you put left stick somewhere else you get uair, fair, etc
Id love to see the marth at some point, you have the Lucina fundies but some tippers are hard but op with setups Also some harder characters like sheik or Peach that you'd have to practice
great video, you getting really good at mixing up entertainment while still being more informativ than a lot of guids people put out there. keep up the great work! (also you dont have to apologize for uploading less frequent :D) have a great day!
Great adaptation Poppt. The next phase is to intentionally cultivate a habit into your opponent, and then start punishing it when they least expect it.
I really like these videos. Although I do somewhat miss the little mac format where you go over your progress from the beginning, ie learning comboes, getting into elite, getting coached, etc then finishing with a tournament.
William did a kara cancel, its a hard ryu and ken tech where you cancel the startup lag of down smash into a true input move. you need to do a the true input super fast. I grinded 2 hour to get it consistent
Idk why, but playing ryu and ken gives you incredible parrying abilities. All ryus and kens have great parrys, and i still am pretty good at parrying just because i used to play them. Whenever you see them, assume they will parry everything
One thing I've noticed that could be done a bit better is mixing up what landing aerials you do. I've only seen landing nair and fair up until the winners finals set. Landing nair is solid and landing up air is actually really good to see up a juggle and advantage state. I know you aren't going to play Roy seriously, but I did want to point it out as someone who has mained Roy since smash 4
KARA CANCEL EXPLANATION! William the Ryu did something called a kara cancel. Its very hard but as soon as your smash attack has a hitbox you can cancel it into a shoryuken, fireball, or tatsumaki shoryuken(side b). You have to do the input you cant just push directional b. The fireball input is down, then diagonally down then right/left. IT IS FRAME PERFECT.
Attack cancel inputs Forward tilt away from person, then press jump and left stick input (towards the direction you want to back air) at same time shortly after forward tilt (like a few frames apart from each other). So basically you’re inputting 3 buttons at once, with the tilt move just a mini second before the other two inputs. In doing say, instead of a tilt move coming out In the direction you initially inputted, it will cancel the tilt move and transform it into an aerial. But it inputed the turn around from the tilt move and the aerial in the direction of your left stick. If you Don’t understand this, look it up and practice. The timing is everything.
Off topic of roy but i love the respect of the pronouns and poppt trying to get them right, from earlier videos he was messing up a little but regardless respect for you my friend is amazing
1:45 Poppt I just wanted to tell you. That I researched how to do RAR and Jair before, but the video I found was really bad but then I hear you talking here about doing the C stick before the jump, and the video I watched was the opposite. So I did some research again right after this and finally found the correct inputs to do Jair and stuff, ALL THANKS TO YOU. THANK YOU JORDAN FOR FREEING ME FROM NOT BEING ABLE TO DO JAIRS AND RARS
The jab back air combo is not using the back air whilst on the ground, what u are actually doing is f-tilting on the ground for 1-2 frames then canceling it with a jump. Doing this turns you around and then because of ultimates weird buffer system it buffers a short hop rising back air with the same input, then just hold towards your opponent with the left stick and that's how u do the combo.
I could be wrong but attack cancels happen because you cancel a move (like in the example it would be f-tilt) by jumping in the very early frames of inputting the move. Because you f tilt the other direction it turns you around. You then do an attack depending on the direction you put the control stick in. No direction nair, backwards back air, forward fair etc.
Do you think you’ll keep making tournament content when smash 6 comes out? Hosting a tournament with the rest of the underdogs would be cool. Maybe like Zach’s smash bash events with a competitive tournament as the main event and some of the casual brackets Zach did at those tournaments as side events or something like that. I feel like that would do really well, especially right at the beginning of a new game.
I love these tournament videos but I wish you would bring back the training videos a day before where you learn the character and get some online practice
19:55 Ryu and Ken can both cancel their normals into specials, so I assume what's going on is that he's charging down smash, and then as soon as he releases it he inputs Shakunetsu, which if done quick enough will only have Down Smash out for 1-3 frames, as Shakunetsu takes priority since it's a special move cancled out of a normal, that beibg Down Smash Adding onto this after seeing more footage, I believe this specific tech is only possible in combination with Down Smash if you're cancelling into an input move (Hadoken, Shakunetsu, Tatsumaki, Shoryuken), so it has to be input move done very quickly out of Down Smash, and it has to be an input move (no easy moves or Focus Attack)
Hey, about that thing with Ryu, Ken (my secondary) also can do it, and what I understand, it’s called a Kara Cancel, and you charge down Smash, release, then you have like 5 frames to do a true input and it’ll cancel the down Smash, I can’t do it myself but it’s pretty useful in certain situations.
the thing with him parrying a lot (he is good at that, not to take credit from him) is that sword characters are more predictable on their landing attack timings so is easier to parry a sword character landing than most other characters
I recently fought a Poppt1 imposter in online smash. I was really excited and then I realized they were fake when I looked at their smash tag. They even did the Poppt1 handshake.
I wonder if this is gonna be a series that Poppt keeps going until there is only Olimar left, at which point it abruptly stops because he just doesn't wanna play Olimar.
The thing is too that Ryu and Ken have a larger parrying window than most other characters to make them more true to their home series. Normally a "perfect shield" has a specific window for characters to parry. Some are better at parrying than others as their is a formula for it, but Ryu and Ken have almost 3 frames more than any other character as a window to land the parry. It's still not a given but if you want to be insane at parrying, Street Fighter seems to he the series to pull from
Definitely easier to do an irar instead of attack cancel lol. Attack cancel also can't hit people when you need a full hop back air, so you have to irar in those situations. Might as well just do it that way every time
This is probably the content where Jordan is at his best. Able to break things down in a tourney setting while also talking about his mentality for certain moves or strategies in a given match. The best parts are when he sees himself do something stupid that he clearly forgot happened and is just like "that... that was just bad" 😂

Input the desired special move (motion input required) between the charge and charge release frames of down smash. About a 3 frame window (yes it's hard.) It's known as the late kara-cancel. Similar things are from street fighter
If you hit someone with the down smash, it’s easier, as the hit lag of the move gives you more time to do the input
@@danilio_1224 that's just a regular special cancel. You can't do this on whiff as the shotos do it in neutral
So it IS using the negative edge of the A press. Interesting. I figured it would either be that, or using B for the input button overwrites the down smash charge. That's super cool.

2:10 I guess I'll explain tilt cancel aerials, but there are a few things we need to cover first:
1- when performing a tilt with the c-stick, the game processes it as two inputs: a direction with the left stick and an A press, both for one frame (i.e. the c-stick is just a macro)
2- when doing an instant short hop aerial (press A during jumpsquat, i.e. within 3 frames of pressing jump) you will always get a short hop with an aerial attack coming out on the first possible frame, and which aerial you get is determined by the left stick's position *_during the jumpsquat._*
3- this game allows you to cancel tilt attacks with a jump within the first 3 frames of the attack, probably to make the short hop instant aerial shortcut (press A during jumpsquat) more lenient.
with that out of the way:
tilt cancel aerials are a technique that takes advantage of two things: 1 - instant ahort hop aerials, and 2 - the fact that doing a forward tilt with the c-stick turns you around.
when you cancel a forward tilt into a jump while the left stick is in a neutral position, you get a neutral aerial; because even though the c-stick sent a directional input to the game, it was only for one frame and was before the jumpsquat started.
combining all this we can dash forward and without ever releasing that forward input, tap the c-stick backwards to sent a tilt attack input to the game, and cancel it with a jump to get a short hop aerial with full forwards momentum but with your character turned around.
if you were holding forwards the whole time, that forward input will be what tells the game which way to attack during the jumpsquat, and you'll get a full momentum instant back air.

you know its a good day when poppt uploads
the ryu down smash cancel is done by doing a true input special in the first two frames of the down smash
I wonder if this is gonna be a series that Poppt keeps going until there is only Olimar left, at which point it abruptly stops because he just doesn't wanna play Olimar.
Good news we are not dieing we are going to live forever
The thing is too that Ryu and Ken have a larger parrying window than most other characters to make them more true to their home series. Normally a "perfect shield" has a specific window for characters to parry. Some are better at parrying than others as their is a formula for it, but Ryu and Ken have almost 3 frames more than any other character as a window to land the parry. It's still not a given but if you want to be insane at parrying, Street Fighter seems to he the series to pull from
Yes! love these videos!
Definitely easier to do an irar instead of attack cancel lol. Attack cancel also can't hit people when you need a full hop back air, so you have to irar in those situations. Might as well just do it that way every time
That grand finals set was pretty hype ngl
It's all fun and games until he joins a tournament with roy koopa
