  • Nijat Abasov has surpassed all expectations at the FIDE World Cup 2023. Starting as the 69th seed in the event, Abasov has beaten Svidler, Giri, Vidit and many more strong opponents to setup a semi-final clash against the world no.1 Magnus Carlsen. Abasov, who is now going to play at the FIDE Candidates 2024, played with great imagination and verve. Check out this battle in the Sicilian Rossolimo along with the commentary of IM Sagar Shah.

Gotta say again, I love this format. All the moves, the clock, the actual board and players as well as the superimposed diagrammatic board, all in one place, and the wait time between moves snipped so the whole game can be watched in exact sequence, in less than three or four hours. This is the best coverage I've seen.

@@DBC00P3R --- Those guys get so into their own analysis they seem to forget that there's a game going on. It's some kind of "handler disease": lesser intellects tell them to "make it exciting", so you get histrionics, them trying to be the foreground, instead of the background. We tune in to watch chess (not boxing, not ballet, not surfing, not downhill skiing). "Exciting" is not exactly what waiting 20 minutes for a move is about. Probably most of us do other exciting things, like visit libraries and read books.

From the body language we can understand that magnus did not even realise that he played a wrong move. Even nijat was not aware of the blunder he made. Only machines can see these things.
