Watching Janus' playing this, one of the most challenging concertos, Starker makes it so easy and never in a hurry~~~ making me falsely believing I might be able to play it like him now. LoL.
Thanks for uploading this concert of the very best J. Starker. He sounds so maestro and perfectly energetic with clarity of each passage. I do not regret I worshiped him when I was young. He was my idol when I learned cello in 1970s, 명불허전! The fame was never a false!
The camera guys know their stuff....,love the duetting vignettes .....this is old school when multiple cameras worked with an editor who planned the shoot with a score in hand. Some of the best brass ensemble balance around and upper strings that listen down ....,love Starkers lack of indulgence😊
The more I look at this, I get better understand why Starker is so popular with Japanese. He certainly look a Samurai in many ways. Bravo, Janus Starker, this is the best Dvorak I've ever seen!!
I really enjoyed this interpretation. For me it was quite refreshing. I like Starker's no nonsense music first approach and he is now one of my favourites (among a few others).
Never about himself, i.e., no unnecessary body movements, when performing. He just let the music sings by itself and his performance, could not be matched as of this writing, has become ARTLESS ART beyond time and space. Miss you Maestro Starker.
Music has a power and strength to move not only the heart and soul, but also the body. So, with that said, what makes you and many others think that a performers movements (body, face and other) is a display of the person and not the music? I challenge you to listen to Dvorak Cello Concerto or any other piece of music and not feel the urge to move.
@@glaucoma888 I have and thus far JS is still the King of all cellists. JS used to say: "Nature has been KIND to me." This attitude makes him immortal.
@@thopham7976 I love life because iot offers us all the chance to express ourselves. I love JS but there are at least 5 other cellists that I would prefer listening to. I'm not sure JS even had a legato and that is to great string playing.
@@glaucoma888 But not having massive orgasm in public like Yo-Yo, Rostropovitch, etc. while performing. It's just so unprofessional !!! JS, the King, could do the impossible technique on the cello more than any cellist in the history of performing arts.
1.54 Yes, Mischa Maisky in the bass tutti solo section - playing expressively with beautiful vibrato and surprise of surprises - a German bow!!! Destined to come up in the world. - - - - - - - - - Janos keeps his cool. Great stuff!!!
What I love about Starker's rendition is that there's no excessive vibrato, rubato idiosyncratic phrasing or far contrasting dynamics. He plays pure Dvorak without making the piece a caricature of itself.
+QuoteToad Jr I totally agree with you. Also his bowing is just like a Samurai pinching his sword with blood, so smooth but surprisingly sharp~ He is the greatest. Compared to him, I watched Rostropovich who seems like an elderly in Hospice Care Center, LoL. I mean the posture, not insulting the maestro.
But bass section - almost NO 16th nots.... in development part!Прекрасное исполнение концерта Дворжака! Все внятно- подробно с великолепным чувством темпо- ритма! Прекрасный музыкант- солист, хорошую жизнь прожил. Браво!
+Weezyl0w I like him. I guess for this music, he knows how to play the orchestra and the music. I am fascinated with his interpretation. Bravo for this wonderful music.
Martin Hoch I'd agree with you, but I guess different people view him differently Also I think his Popper stuff are pretty fantastic, as well as the Cassado suite
Listening to this I totally see why Starker’s solo career was eclipsed when western audiences heard Rostropovich. Certainly perfect playing but to me it sounds like he’s playing an etude rather then a romantic concerto. Of course I studied with Greenhouse who really was the opposite of Starker. I did not attend but I heard from Tim Eddy that their joint masterclasses at Indiana were really a battle of two egos. If one liked your playing the other thought it was terrible.
More or less agree, but I personally wouldn't go so far as to call it "perfect playing" -- I admire a lot of things about Starker, mostly physical, but one thing I just can't get over when I listen to or watch him play is his bow changes, especially at the tip. I don't understand why he does them the way he does, especially when his left hand articulates so cleanly.
Honnestly, one Master of this qualification could give more. The first time I see the Orchestra giving more musicality and "Musical Intimity" than a Soloist. The problem of Starker is a "total control" over the instrument and the bow. But even in this "controlled" version he however has the rythmical problems. So sad.
Thanks for uploading this historical concert. Mr. STARKER IS THE POET AMONG THE CELLISTS.

This might be the most Starker performance ever recorded

The most beautiful cello sound.

@@thopham7976 Clearly you have not expereinced an organsim. I know organism and those (Ma and Rosti) are not organisms. lol
This must be one of the longest orchestral introductions for a concerto..... The Brahms concerto is long but this is even longer.
Elegant and full of character.

ロストロポーヴィチも実演に接したけれど
1番素晴らしかったドボルザークはシュタルケルでした

I feel like this concerto just fits him. The fast parts sound really macho and the slower melodic parts are exposed/sensitive.
The most brilliant cellist of the 20th Century. RIP.
my best cello player...janos starker..
very nice video, showing the right musician every moment. Not static at all!
I can't be the only one who noticed that the percussionist looks frustrated playing the triangle at 27:20.
Starker was magnificent.
With Starker no schmaltz, Just the real thing.
Young Mischa Maisky joined the bass section at 1:54 !
LittleHarryBrother1 wow is he the real mischa maisky ,if he is ,that is weird
+謝理格 do you really believe that?
Proof that he is the best. The difficult ascending double stops at 11:40
William E ㅈ
I generally prefer to watch Rostropovich, however on this Piece I actually prefer Starker .

Thanks I wondered if it was Sir Colin Davis
'Damn your heart , make music!'

Hungarian machismo! Fabulous
❤❤❤
По-моему контрабасист , просто очень похожий на Майского!
wow
one of the greatest teachers. I wouldn't recommend many of his recordings accept maybe some of the Bach and of course, the Kodaly.
¨Son, just don't...¨

Also look up him playing the Prokofiev Sinfonia Concertante and the first Rautavaara Cello Concerto.

Er componierte die Oktaven ?
especially after 9:40 this beautiful passage so bad and ugly played!
Mediocre, pedestrian, mechanical, pedantic.

This interpretation sounds like wet mush :/
