    Australian flying foxes carry Lyssavirus lady, three fatalities on record all in Queensland and the virus has been found in bat populations all over Australia. Get your facts right ..
    We have rabies here too.
    The survivers are doing remarkably well . Jeana graduated, has twins and is working .
    What's wrong with you?

      I honestly can't blame her for this. I'm doing rabies research and I can't tell you how many scientific articles state that Australia doesn't have rabies- it has, or that rabies can't be found in Antarctica-it can, it's called artic rabies...

    If your bite was on the Calf area, how many weeks does it take to reach the brain? Also, if it tingles, will it take months to travel to the brain? It’s quite confusing

    So glad about the squirrels!! I just rescued a young squirrel a week and a half ago, been nursing him back to health, subcutaneous saline a few days, thought he was a goner for a second, but then he bounced back. Was researching things these little critters can carry.
    Why is it that squirrels don’t carry it?
    Thanks for the video🙏😊🙏

      I'm not sure. My guess is that rodents do not have an appropriate receptor for the virus so the virus can't get in, or that the host genome replication machinery is not compatible with virus replication.

    I was bitten by rabbid dog in my childhood like 25 years ago. I never had any vaccine or medication then. Can i get infected now? Should I get vaccine now? Would any medicine or vaccine anger dormant virus? Thanks.

      Why werent you treated then?
      Assuming you’re still in incubation, I guess you could try and get a shot, I’m not sure if that would work but it might save you

    Should I get the shot or am I just a hypochondriac?
    Was in the backyard with my dad, who was brushing the pool with a broom. Evening, skies were cloudy and looked stormy to the right of where I was standing in the yard. Felt what felt like rainwater from a slight sprinkle land onto my wrist. (Which was possible, given the weather.) Looked down at my wrist, saw a slight, very tiny puff near an also miniature bullseye. Did not see anything fly at me, did not feel anything other than the, “bite.” There wasn’t any pain or itchiness, just the mark. The mark very shortly went away. Dad says that I was just imagining the wound and it was poolwater from whatever he was doing that landed on my wrist. I shouldn’t be stressed to tears that a tiny, rabid bat bit me and then flew away but here we are
    oh i forgot to mention - i live in gilbert, az, just to clarify

    Bitten by an animal that “rarely “ has rabies is not grounds to deny post vaccines. Rare means nothing when it could mean a life. Drs need to stop being arrogant about that issue

    • @xDomglmao
      @xDomglmao 3 года назад

      In the ED it's actually like this (they work based on papers):
      - bat bite? => straight vaccine & Ig (if no prior vaccine)
      - unknown animal? => straight vaccine (if no prior vaccine)
      - known animal (meaning pet etc.) => observe animal 10d => if normal => dont go for rabies prophylaxis; if abn. => test for rabies
      - if prior vaccine: only 2 dose regimen of vaccine (no Ig)

    Doctor, yesterday we rescued a rabid dog. During the process the dog shaked his head and little saliva fell on dog catcher's hand. He was using my mobile then. After that he handed over mobile to me and i used it. Is there any chance of transmission of rabies from my mobile if saliva is present on my phone.?

    Dr. Richards, I tried to find information about the mass case of rabies in 1951 and I was unable to find anything. Do you have a reference to an article? Thank you.

    • @maureenrichardsimmunologym9632
      @maureenrichardsimmunologym9632  5 лет назад +4

      I inherited the story of the 1951 outbreak from a now retired colleague. However, I have found this book chapter from 2004 "Historical Perspective of Rabies in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin" supports the idea that at several times between 1951 and the 1960's times there were outbreaks of wolf, dog, or fox attacks which lead to outbreaks of rabies.
      The chapter can be found on research gate. www.researchgate.net/profile/Luisa_Sanchez_serrano/publication/237149887_Historical_Perspective_of_Rabies_in_Europe_and_the_Mediterranean_Basin/links/00b4951b9a1a82ca68000000/Historical-Perspective-of-Rabies-in-Europe-and-the-Mediterranean-Basin.pdf

    How is the transmission from human to human? When exactly is a human infectious for other? When the virus reaches the brain and to saliva? Thx for answering

    • @xDomglmao
      @xDomglmao 3 года назад +1

      saliva (aka bite); I assume the incub time is for humans similar like other animals (20-90d), so after that time the virus should be present in the saliva

    Could I get rabies from a cat scratch(in Pakistan) where the cat peeled off Mrs dead skin meaning his claw glanced over my hands and I saw a white mark and afterwards when I washed my hand there was no wound. The cat was also eating apples and drinking milk the night before. Is there a chance?

    Hello, i want to ask some question. Why human immune system can't fight the rabies virus by itself like when the immune system fight againts influenza virus. Thank you !!

    • @joanbaczek2575
      @joanbaczek2575 4 года назад

      The virus hides from immune system in muscle until very high viral load then used nervous system to travel up to the brain because load is so high and quickly going for the brain the immunsystem doesn’t have enough time to build lymphocytes to fight befor rabies gets to the brain. When it’s in the brain you might have fighters to now kill the rabies but the fighters can’t get into the brain like the rabies did
