Seeing as I live such a solitary lifestyle, Death Stranding connected with me in a powerful way. It's
the most relatable game I've played since Metal Gear Solid 2. While it's impact on me wasn't necessarily as immediate as that of Planescape: Torment, I suspect that in the future, when I'm at some of my lowest points, not sure of what to do with myself next, I'll look back on some of the lessons I took from this game for guidance.
The music in this video is from Low Roar's contribution to the "Death Stranding" OST. "The Music Scene" by Blockhead, and the "Donut County" OST by Daniel Koestner & Ben Esposito

im also not entirely sure about deadman. i think hes got a soul. even though he is basicaly constructed out of others....i remember an email from him where he talks about it, while also not beeing entirely sure himself. he says he doesnt have a beach....at least thats what he belives.

Yeah, I probably should've noted how vague the game kept that, I framed it as if I was sure. However, I think that his fear that he might not have a beach serves the same purpose as if he absolutely didn't have one, at least, for the purposes of my reading of the game

My guess is that he missed a "phase of development", something that would have attached him to his soul like how his creation gave him a body.
With all the emphasis on umbilical cords and connections, I imagine that his soul is somewhere far beyond the Beach - Deadman was never "properly" born, like you or me, so the "tether" of his soul to his body was never made. His body was brought into this world, and so was everything for him to have a soul, but due to a step that was missed in his development, the soul was never properly "attached".
He still has it, it's just undetectable and beyond reach because he never managed to cross the metaphysical threshold that would "properly" make him a living being.

This sentence really stuck with me

    • @DarkAngelEU
      @DarkAngelEU 4 года назад +8

This sentence could go for endings in general. For example, if you break up with someone, and it was beautiful while it lasted, you'll be more forgiving of letting go. The understanding that there's no more use in trying, knowing it won't be the same again, could open one up to let it be. Finding peace in death comes down to the same thing, can you let go of life peacefully or are you struggling to make it work?

"Still Walking" is in ever single Konami/Kojima game. It is first referenced in Snatcher. I believe the symbolism of the Ludens planting the KojimaPro flag is Hideo is done "walking" and has made it to his destination. He is finally free of a malicious corporate entity. Connecting to the tone of DS

I mean, I get where you're coming from. But I think the real problem is one you'd run into with any extremely expensive creative endeavor. MGSV was in development for five years, and its production cost had ballooned up toward one hundred million dollars. And the games industry is uniquely challenged with a constantly changing landscape. Ten years ago, when development started, banking on gigantic, expensive open world games was an insane risk. It's hard to blame Konami for being what it is, a profit driven machine that weighs risk and reward and found MGSV too unbalanced.
On the other hand, MGSV, great as it is, was also a demonstration that Kojima Productions had outgrown that IP, and as Leadhead points out, felt trapped. From what little I understand of Japanese culture, there's a deep bond of duty between corporations and their people, one that often strips away individual freedoms. Presumably, the staff at Kojima Productions felt obligated to continue working under Konami, and grew increasingly frustrated with the company's insistence on cranking out endless sequels and spin-offs to the team's first breakout success. In the end, the outcome was for the best. Sure, MGSV might have been a slightly better game with that last mission that got cut, but whatever. Konami let KP go, they had to learn to swim on their own, and now they're flexing their creative muscles in ways no company, least of all Konami, would have allowed. So everyone wins, especially us.

I still remember Jim Sterling criticizing Kojima for being indulgent, as if he’d never played one of games before. This eccentric style that he’s had has always existed in his games and his curse to breakthrough into a new IP must’ve been hell knowing that people like Dunkey expected TPP 2, the apex of Metal Gear Solid gameplay.

The lines about "you can lead a life alone but won't know how substantial it is until you connect" makes me think of one of my favorite artists. Henry Darger. A man that spent his life living in an apartment alone, going from job to job and not really making any friends. When he was dying the landlord and his wife were cleaning out his house when they found a back room covered in drawings and manuscripts. All in all there was 15,145 pages of content. The landlord wanted to trash it all but his wife stopped him. They went to visit him in the hospital and asked why he didn't release any of it. His only response being "it's done now".
For me as an artist it is inspiring seeing someone that dedicated to manifesting their story. But also incredibly sad when you actually look at what happened in his life, how it made him reclusive, and how it influenced his work. With his story pretty much being about protecting kids because of the horrible trauma he went through as a child. To further the artistic inspiration, the man had no art education and just made his pieces in any way he could. Tracing characters from advertisements and adding features, etc.

If I died right now I wouldn't be missed, I wouldn't be remembered, and I just kept on telling myself that everyone lives alone and will die alone and its normal to live with no connections. heck the way I'm living I'm already dead. What you describe in the video's introduction is pretty much exactly how Hegel views the world. To Hegel, the human being is a social creature in a very deep-seated, essential way. When we're alone, we become diminished because we cannot gain recognition or sanity checks from other independent human minds (something the Hegel calls "an other", an agent that's external to us which we cannot completely control or predict). We cannot know if an experience is truly real or just our imagination, if our ideas are dumb or if our art can evoke the feelings we want it to. When we're alone, we cannot make our fears and apprehensions more tolerable because we cannot share them with another. We understand other people quite easily, but we have a much more harder time understanding ourselves, because the brain we're trying to analyse is also the tool we're using to analyse it in the first place - there's bound to be some blind spots and we need other homo sapiens monkeys.
    _
Plato talked about how important and essential the polis (lit. "city", which is a metaphor for society) is to a human being: To belong to a polis is to belong to humankind. Someone outside the polis, for better or for worse, is not considered human, either because they are below humans (a beast) or something above the limitations of mortal existence (a god).
    _
Even self-identified hermits and misanthropes cannot completely escape a dilemma that even their desire for isolation and seclusion is, in the end, determined by other people. They might've grown tired of other people, they might've been mistreated or they might want to disconnect to a society because that society makes them feel unwell. Or maybe they're hoping for a better world, but they think the progress will never come or is too slow, so they start to hate other people. But in a perverse way, they might even be more socially sensitive, as some of the hermits have gone through a lot of personal inconvenience to divorce themselves from the society.

      @Oscar4u69 4 года назад +5

I love your analysis and explanation.
but I'd like to argue about "the others" being easier to understand, through my life I've found that it's almost impossible to completely understand other people, they often seem irrational, unreachable and illogical. I've never being able to understand the actions of others, many of their decisions often seem illogical, I always expect different outcomes, decisions or explanations, but they never coincide with what I expected. for me, humans appear to be very random and unpredictable, impossible to fully comprehend.
I always wonder if my case is a minority because it's really hard for me to socialize and open up to others, specially because I decided that I shouldn't trust any stranger with specific things (feelings, contact, affection, etc.).
with that in mind... self discovery and self understanding has been one journey that seems much easier and logical.
with the help of philosophy, I found that one can self reflect, analyze and understand oneself in a unique way, because you are the one who can analyze all the thoughts that led you to a decision and conclude why you did what you did.
[sorry if my English is bad, I'm not a native speaker]

@@Oscar4u69 I think it's precisely because of what has been touched on in this video, that everyone has a 'beach' of their own, their own imprisoned feelings and emotions, only sharing as much as we are comfortable showing, which leads to us assuming other's outward personality to be all that. When someone acts irrational or make decision that seemingly defy what we think of them, it might just be one of these deeper desires they are ashamed to show acting out. Miscommunication and the fear of ostracization seem to be the biggest obstacle in interpersonal relationships, the fear of being honest and truthful about every part of oneself, which only leads to more problems down the road as the other only sees you as you present yourself, not as you truly feel or think.
It's true that philosophy helped me as well understand myself better, but in reality, I know that very little of the connections I have even know or felt how much I've changed about my personal beliefs because there is a deep seated fear of being seen as pretentious or outright dramatic, which I noticed really damaged some connections I have by them not aware of what I personally keep in isolation, and I can only imagine how others feel as well regarding my own or others ignorance regarding the thoughts and feelings they keep on their beach.

When I was writing about your video to my journal of daily experiences, I labeled it "True connections in the face of Death". I'm fascinated by the importance you place on connections. It's a great lens to see the world through. I do have the context of your Disco Elysium video. I've had ideas in a similar vein and your essays struck a chord.
My idea was about the definition of life. Perceiving the life as a purely biological standpoint is robbing it of its richness. Life is the change we bring into the world through our words and actions that affect the world around us. And with this definition, death is the last time your ideas and actions (perceived and transformed by the others) have any effect on the future world.
Also, this thinking goes well with listening to 65daysofstatic)) I feel like their best work is Radio Protector, but I was listening to "Sleepwalk City" while writing the comment.

Really fascinating take about Sam's fear of (lack of) afterlife. I always interpreted Sam's aloofness at the start of the game to be a sort of willful self-isolation -- that he only cared about things close to him like his family, who were dying one by one, and so that he had nothing left to connect himself to.
Until your video, it didn't really occur to me that his repatriation was a short-term blessing but a long-term curse. After all, he's always visiting the Beach and the Seam, so at first blush, it seems natural that Sam would be one of the MOST at peace with the afterlife. Even after watching several video essays on this game, yours was the first to flip my thinking on its head, so thank you for that!

It made me rethink my Catholic upbringing, I read Zarathustra when I was 15, it all basically came down to "people are destroying this planet and all they care about is their own comfort". It was a phenomenal series, but I was also deeply obsessed by it and looking back, must've been some 14-15 years ago, I can't even figure out why it made such an impact on me. Probably because I was a teenager going through really tough times and Shinji made me think alot about myself, so I identified with him, tried to be a part of his world, but now that I'm older I don't wanna be like Shinji anymore. My life is different and I'm very happy it turned out this way. I'm more comfortable being an individual on my own beach and I'm glad to see strangers strolling down the coastline. Lately, I found it's nice to visit other beaches as well, but I still prefer to go there by boat ^_^

32:10 I would argue that it's not specifically death, but rather, the fear of pain.
Why do we fear Death? Because we fear __ending__ , because we fear pain emotional, physical and mental whether that is pain for ourselves or pain that others experience.
It's that pain more than anything that drives us. When I was suicidally depressed, the main thing that kept those thoughts away was that I would give extreme emotional pain to others. I didn't *want* anything, I just wanted the pain to end, but at the same time didn't want to hurt others in the process.

WormwoodBecomeDelphinus I kinda see an aspect of that. I don’t fear death as much as I fear pain. I’ve already done enough in life to be content with it coming to an end. It still sucks but honestly what I focus on daily is not feeling pain. Especially physical pain. Guess that’s why I been on opiates for 6 years. and Emotional pain too. being close to family and loved ones to appreciate them while you still have them and vice versa is also one of my top priorities. Being in the moment is amazing.

Death stranding for me was a magical experience.. Considering how mondane and easy task the game ultimately give you and the sole purpose of the game is to walk from A to B at its core.. The story and how well i connected with sam was like "I need to know this answer" and I hated some characters, grew to love those characters and I pushed for a finish, only to find out that the game had me tricket all along. The magical feeling of this game is when you walk to a certain place in the beginning of the game and the song "Bones" Plays in the background had me chilled to the core.. And at the end of the game i was doing the exact same thing, and guess what.. chilled to the core. some people call it a walking simulator, and probably for them they are not wrong. but for me, this was my own life story told in a overexaggerated way. I saw myself in Sam so much, from every interaction, and he made every action i would've made if this was a Choice game.. And because I agreed with this game, I Know that there are a lot of people out there who can not agree with it, and therefor they will hate the game. And i respect that. Its my favourite game and story by far.

I don't think you need anyone to value your life.
Each person is really alone in their world because each person receives and perceives the world differently.
In a sense, a man creates his reality, so he gives himself the value it will have.

With the danger of oversimplyfying a very complex topic, the only quantative literature I've read on meaning in life covers three studies which all point unanimously to people (mattering to people, more precisely) being the progenitor of meaning in life, purpose and cohesion in one's world.
On another note, even though my primary interest is existential psychology, I think it's completely unnecessary to abstract ourselves to some knowledge of death to glean any meaning from life.
Meaning of life is not derived from the knowledge that it will be gone someday, but rather from actually living; because making connections with people is pleasurable and more; experiencing the world is meaningful in and of itself in the concrete situation of doing so.

In the religion that I personally follow, we are taught that death is an inevitable stage in the ongoing human life cycle, it isn't the end, and it isn't to be feared. That said, it also teaches us that we must value life, because it is a gift from the gods, passed to us by our ancestors, for us in turn to pass to our descendants. There's a complicated part here about how our ancestors and our descendants are the same people, but I don't need to get into that now. We do not believe that fear of death is the only thing that drives us to live, we are taught that we have a duty of care to our family, and a duty of service to our community. On top of that, we must also strive for self-improvement; better health, better business, better wisdom, so that we can better serve our community and wider folk. There are no shortage of things a person should do with their time, even if they don't fear death, and we have the Gods to thank for the teachings that motivate us to strive for greatness. That said, the afterlife isn't a paradise. Suffering exists there, perfection does not, it's cold and dark, you can get bored, you won't be endlessly happy, but your ancestors will be there, and eventually your turn to experience life again will come around.

The game gives the implication that one day Humanity will go extinct but I honestly believe the opposite.
Might be my religious upbringing (Jewish) talking here but I believe that if we don’t destroy ourselves and socially evolve we will one day attain something akin to ascension whether it be like Dave in 2001 or like Daniel from Stargate
Basically I believe that our current mortal forms are just a stepping stone towards the next stage in our evolution but to achieve that we must band together as a singular species and work towards a common goal.

Context: I’m very much a Christian and do believe there is a Heaven.
I think it’s a bit ridiculous people think that “well if you’re truly religious you wouldn’t fear death” and some go so far as to wonder why we don’t just kill ourselves to get to heaven sooner.
The big obvious point that I just can’t understand why some people don’t get it is that we’re still human beings.
We have survival wired in us biologically just like any other living thing, so of course we’re naturally going to have an aversion to death.
Even discounting that point, from what I understand most religions say that your life has an impact on the afterlife (for a long time Catholics claimed anyone who committed suicide would go to hell regardless of faith, I believe).
So why would you cut your life, and therefor your potential to influence your afterlife, short?
And a final point is that, well, we care.
Everyone cares about others, at least to a degree (maybeee make an exception for clinical sociopaths and psychopaths but idk).
We know our deaths would impact those we love, those we work with, and even from the most cynical POV possible it’d hurt our company.
I don’t know your religious beliefs (I’d guess agnostic or atheist from your videos, but it could honestly be anything) but at least from my Christian POV death, while not the end and for your own sake kinda a good thing, is certainly not something to long for.
As Paul said one of the many times his life was threatened, “to live is Christ, to die is gain.”
(Essentially, living lets you fulfill Christ’s purpose in your life and to die is getting to go to Heaven. Heaven is better than Earth, but you should stay on Earth until your purpose is fully fulfilled).
Allllll of that said, I still enjoyed the video and am very happy I found this channel.

      Merc at Arms
I get what you mean. In general I feel people are afraid of the unknown, no one really knows what dying feels like. I’m an atheist myself, although if no one try to preach to me I don’t go for counter-preach. I do not think there is life after death, I imagine it akin to a normal unconsciousness of sleeping, albeit eternal. I thought I was not afraid of death since I rather like sleeping and wish it could be longer... I’m passively suicidal you see, but one night while high on my bed, I started to find it harder to breath, it wasn’t painful or uncomfortable at all, but I still started to think and fear what if I fall asleep now and never wake up?
Fear of death is very ingrained into living beings, for an obvious reason too, especially if you agree with evolution via natural selection.

anyone can tell me, why the old bridget and Amelie were at the same time on the same beach? The scene right after the Higgs fight.
Amelie told Sam to wait, did she change her appearance in that time and went to Die Hardman?
And then, after Cliff Unger appears, Amelie pushed Sam down the hill. And i'm not sure if Bridget was still down at the water in that scene.
Because there was no mention, that Amelie or anyone can change their appearance. Amelie was always the young 20yo lady stranded on the beach.

My dude, you really, really, reeeeally need to read up on Kardecism if the topic explored by Kojima interests you. From my understanding the whole cosmology of Death Stranding is mostly compatible with what Allan Kardec came up with like a hundred or two hundred years ago. There's some stuff that is missing however, but the part about life after death and the beach etc are all elements present on Kardec's work when it comes to their function if not their iconography (for example, Kardec sees the recently dead as being sent to a place where they can start getting used to the whole Being Dead thing before they can move on to the real afterlife etc, but it's not in the shape of a beach). It should make for a very interesting read for you, especially if it's your first rodeo reading up about spooky spooky occult stuff.
