This is such a sad song knowing how Sammy’s last days were losing his life to throat cancer, what kind of cruel fate that the same thing that brought him fame and fortune would be what he loses his life to. Sammy you’re truly missed the one and only there will never be another like

Sammy Davis Jr. gets inside this great song in a way only Sammy could do, peak form vocally as great as singing from the soul with an original distinctive voice gets, tour de force to be sure & one to savor and enjoy over and over again!

Don Black wrote this great song for his lifelong friend, Matt Monro. Matt Monro and Sammy Davis became great friends in the 1960s and Monro was the first guy Sammy always looked up when he came to London and they would hit all the best clubs in town. But apart from being two of the best singers of the 1960s and 70s they also had something less fortunate in common. Both men were heavy smokers and good drinkers which affected their health greatly. Matt Monro died of cancer in 1985 aged 54 and Sammy Davis passed away from cancer in 1990 aged 65. It's worth checking out Matt Monro's version of this song just to appreciate how great these singers really were.
Maybe the words, but it is Udo Jürgens who has composed this song. And so, nice story, maybe true with friendship and cancer, but Udo jürgens composed this song. so try to be honest and don`t write things, which are not true. please.
Now this man was an entertainer, he did it ALL...everyone else took notes from him. The great entertainer himself...the way he sung that, if you didn't feel....
Yes. I agree, but he didn't know it.. He was always looking up to Frank Sinatra and seeking his approval...How sad. It was a tough time being a black man back then.
@@syneathiabell1350 I wish to add that it was through Frank Sinatra caring for Sammy Davis, Jr. that paved the way to improvement of the treatment of black entertainers in Las Vegas by refusing to perform in Vegas if Sammy was not allowed to walk into the casinos from the front entrance and stay in the hotel. Sammy, to me is the greatest one man entertainer of all time barring none. Please see my other comment above.
This man was probably the greatest all round talent we will ever see

Young men wrote to me
Everybody seemed to have time to devote to me
Everyone I saw all swore they knew me
Once upon a song
Main attraction, couldn't buy a seat
The celebrity, celebrities were dying to meet
I've had every accolade bestowed on me
And so you see
If I never sing another song
It wouldn't bother me
I had my share of fame
You know my name
If I never sing another song
Or take another bow
I would get by, but I'm not sure how
Always posing, but you love it all
Though you have to learn to act like you're above it all
Everything I did the world applauded
Once upon a star
Framed citations, hung on every wall
Got a scrapbook full of quotes, I can recall them all
There were times I felt the world belonged to me
And so you see
If I never sing another song
It wouldn't bother me
I had my share of fame
You know my name
If I never sing another song
Or take another bow
I would get by, but I'm not sure how
But I'm not sure how
But I'm not sure how
