Wow! I hadn’t heard Sammy in years, then stumbled across this video and can’t stop playing it. This is the man at his peak... A stunning song from a brilliant performer. It showcases the artistry of his phrasing as well as his passion and pure vocal power. Every note effortless, as natural as breathing. And he was an entertainer in every sense of the word - singer, dancer, actor, musician, comedian, impressionist... The kind of complete performer who was rare even then and doesn’t exist anymore. Sam was immensely talented, truly one of a kind. At his best, as he is here, there was simply no one better.
Sammy didn't just sing a song, he performed a song with feeling and emotions that emphasized the lyrics and the story. One of the most talented entertainers, ever.
Sammy is still one of the best voices I have ever heard and always will be as long as I live. Sammy, Ella and Nat all superb voices of the highest quality
I knew him well. He was a friend of our family . He was a kind, funny man . And he lived to perform ! I was proud to have known him , and to be able to watch him rehearse, perform , and give his all at every performance.
Sammy was probably the most humble guy in the entertainment business. He was an exceptional singer. He could dance very well and his acting, both comediec and dramatic, were above reproach. He deserved more noteriety then he actually received,. Maybe because of race. But nevertheless, he will go down as one of the greatest performers of all time.
Yes! The way he always asks the audience permission to perform. Like he isn't taking for granted that he's in the position he's in, and that he remembered to be grateful and for the chances he got in life.
I wasn't aware of how talented he actually was until I began searching out his videos. Indeed he was in the top three of the greatest performers of all time. That kind of all around talent is not found easily. He's surely one entertainer I wish I could have seen live.
Sammy Davis, Jr. has got to be the greatest one-man-show entertainer of all time. I can't think of anyone like him. A great singer, dancer, stand up comedian...you name, it he did it......and without back up singers or chorus dancers popular nowadays who can mask the shortcomings of today's performers. Sammy was pure talent and I was privileged to watch him perform live on 3 different occasions.
I love jazz, since childhood. I'm 28, but my friends do not understand the quality of this music. Every time I listen this song,.. and vocal of Sammy Davis Jr. I got goosebumps at the end.. Legends live forever!!!
Calvin West I’m the same way man. 23. It’s perfection personified. Listening to Sammy, NAT, Sarah Vaughan.. they’re all so incredibly gifted. All masters of the instrument of song that they were all blessed with.
I am really thankful to Jacks2 for putting this on here for all of us who have enjoyed Sammy for over 60 years and will until we die and then we can see him again in person and they must have a great show in Heaven. RIP Mr. Davis.
Knocked that one out of the park...one of our greatest entertainers...I hope future generations can watch this and enjoy like we did (and still do) ...just awesome
Today's "performers" couldn't hold a candle to Sammy Davis and others of that era. They could sing, dance and act. All without the help from computer generated sounds and pictures. Their talent was pure.
Whenever I hear the music my teenage daughter listens to, I sometimes feel she is cheated by the shallow talent vocal pool out there--so I had her listen to this outstanding Anthony Newly song, sung by a truly gifted and outstanding singer with passion and range...Sammy Davis, jr. She heard him sing--was quiet for a moment---and then she said, "Oh my God!" My sentiments exactly.
Martha Gartsman AGREED-all you have to do is listen to the alleged "talent" on IDOL and The Voice and then watch this and you can't help but wonder whats going on out there...
wow, 18 years young...guess what i was 18 and good looking (ha, ha) when i was working in vegas at the sands..i beleive it was 1959.. i saw the rat pack at the sands.. frank, dean, sammy, louie prima vic dammone... the best years of my life...i admire you... because i fell in love with this guys... keep up the good work...thank you...
Most versions of standards from that era nearly always find their very finest expressions in the Sammy Davis Jr. version. This guy was a singer's singer, a dancer's dancer and a showman's showman. Absolutely exceptional and far, far greater than all his peers, Sinatra included.
Sammy Davis Jr. was honestly the true star of the rat pack-- the most talented of the bunch, it's a shame that he wasn't given the recognition he deserved.
Sammy Davis Jr...was such a HUGE TALENT!!! the greatest of singers with soul..and overall genuine performer!! He should have been more publicly famous in this genre of songs....Thank you for posting!!
Just fabulous. Truly magnificent. No one could sing like this man. His style will never be duplicated; his phrasing is his signature. I dare say he is my absolute favorite performer of all time.
Simply, Mr. Davis was the most talented entertainer of the 20th Century; not to mention the racial hatred he had to endure as he broke barriers left and right, as well as the devastating car accident, which took his eye. But he kept moving forward and sharing that incredible gift of his multi talent: singer, dancer, actor, impressionist, and player of too many instruments to list. Thank you Mr. Davis. RIP. Gone too soon...
I sure do miss the 70s and 80s. The music today is not even the same. Sometimes I wish I could find a time machine and go back in time. Life was much easier and everyone enjoyed life! Is this your favorite song?
Sammy was by far the best of the rat pack , I don't know if he held them together , or humbled himself in there company, he should have had his own television show!!!
No doubt he was the best talent. But if you missed seeing him in concert then you really missed his "magic." Besides the personality that exudes from him, there is that little tiny body with these huge lungs .. the noise he could make was so amazing coming from such a small frame.
Sammy Davis Jr is one of my many classic Idols along with Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, Bobby Darin, Gene Kelly and the rest of the Rat Pack. Sammy though is the top of the list to me...
A friend of mine asked me once who I thought was the best all around male entertainer. It said Sammy Davis, Jr. He was trying to get me to say Michael Jackson but Sammy came to mind first. He is spectacular.
Loved him for most of my life. I often times laugh or cry when listening to him singing. Once in awhile cry and laugh at the same time. He was a very special man. Real Cool.
Such a beautiful song! I know many artists have probably covered this song, but in my humble opinion, Sammy's version is the best. There is something about his voice and his style that makes him so fantastic!
WE WON'T SEE THE LIKES MR. DAVIS, AGAIN OR HEAR IT AGAIN. HE WAS THE TOP OF THE GAME, HE WAS GOLD STANDARD, THAT EVERYONE REACHED FOR. The man had more talent n one finger than ANY one around, show business wise
As young people, whenever my parents wanted to get rid of us, all they had to do was put on Sammy Davis Jr or Nat King Cole records, and we'd take off out the door!! LOL How ironic that after we saw these same Stars on the Ed Sullivan Show, and later, Nat King Cole got his own Show .. suddenly we learned to truly appreciate their Art and genius!! I still have my parent's old 78's records, and I'll keep them for the rest of my Life!! With Gratitude to ALL the GREATS!!
Right on! And just look at how long careers such as Sammy's, Frank's, Bing's, Deano's, Nat's and Louis' lasted. Those enteratiners and performers were around for decades. They weren't a passing trend or fad. They didn't need an army of backup dancers or bizzare lighting arragments to make a show. All they had to do was show up. Crooning and swooning with class and talent singing a song that was delightful, not frightful. Just a man, a mic, and a melody to sing to.
I'm a music instructor teaching guitar, bass, and piano. I make all of my students finally get into jazz. I make them listen to the greats. These masters knocked it out, night after night. No lip-syncing. No 200 takes and pick the best word or phrase. Listen to the band and the arrangement. Thank god we still have film score masters. We need to get back to real talent. Sammy and the gang had it. It's still out there. We just need to raise instead of lower the bar. Get rid of American Idol
Sammy was always underrated. Too many remember him for the "Candy Man" (his biggest solo hit), which is a shame because he could really sing. A great collection would be "I've Gotta Be Me" on Reprise. It includes this Anthony Newley gem and also "What Kind of Fool Am I".
“With your kind permission.” Gets me every rewatch. I know what’s coming and he’s acting like anyone would turn it down. RIP Legend.
Also shows an era of bygone class not seen in entertainment...or anywhere else for that matter, anymore.
I thought the same...
100% Musician 100% professionals 100% Legend; beautiful lyric and arrangement. Anthony Newley was very underrated.
“With your kind permission.” hits me always
So classy and elegant. ❤
Wow! I hadn’t heard Sammy in years, then stumbled across this video and can’t stop playing it. This is the man at his peak... A stunning song from a brilliant performer. Sammy didn't just sing a song, he performed a song with feeling and emotions that emphasized the lyrics and the story. One of the most talented entertainers, ever.
Agreed. Sadly there's nobody even close to his level of talent these days. :(
Amen to that.
GOAT / no one comes near Mr SDJ ❤️💪
I always say this - the most underrated talent!
Politics and prejudice was always a challenge for Sammy - notwithstanding this - he became the indisputable GOAT.
My time machine is almost done, who’s coming? 🙂
All day
Please
I ammmmmm
I got shot gun! (front seat)
✋
There is no talent in the entertainment business like Sammy Davis anymore
Sammy is still one of the best voices I have ever heard and always will be as long as I live. Sammy, Ella and Nat all superb voices of the highest quality
True! My only disappointment is that Sammy only performed once each with Ella and Nat. Would have been great if he did more.
Love that awesome list of Entertainers. I'll add my favorite singer> Sam Cooke
@@ryanm776 YUP !!!
Amazing timbre, power and interpretation - he was indeed profoundly talented.
Oh my. Who else can sing like this now? None!
I knew him well. He was a friend of our family . He was a kind, funny man . And he lived to perform ! I was proud to have known him , and to be able to watch him rehearse, perform , and give his all at every performance.
This performance is simply astounding. It's a shame that the world lost Sammy Davis Jr. so soon. No other performer can parallel his talent.
Agree all the way, outstanding entertainer,we will never see this again.totally a one off.
The greatest all rounder of all time - he had it all
Sammy was probably the most humble guy in the entertainment business. He was an exceptional singer. He could dance very well and his acting, both comediec and dramatic, were above reproach. He deserved more noteriety then he actually received,. Maybe because of race. But nevertheless, he will go down as one of the greatest performers of all time.
Right on target. thanks

; )
🙏❤️SDJ the greatest all round Entertainer of all time
Frank got all the accolades but Sammy did the hard work. Singing, dancing, impresisions. Man, do we need someone like that today.
Wonderful music and singer. We miss you honey.
Amazing. Just amazing. Sammy's rendition is my favorite of this song. What a voice. Always blows me away.
I love jazz, since childhood. I'm 28, but my friends do not understand the quality of this music. Every time I listen this song,.. and vocal of Sammy Davis Jr. I got goosebumps at the end.. Legends live forever!!!
I have them myself! This song is unbelievable!
Calvin West I’m the same way man. 23. It’s perfection personified. Listening to Sammy, NAT, Sarah Vaughan.. they’re all so incredibly gifted. All masters of the instrument of song that they were all blessed with.
This isn't Jazz, this is a musical broadway song. It used to be called popular music, but now is referred to as "traditional pop".
Same!
As far as I am concerned Mr Davis was the most talented multi-faceted performer that has ever graced the the American stage.
Just reading Sammy's biography and enjoying his music. What a genius.
I am really thankful to Jacks2 for putting this on here for all of us who have enjoyed Sammy for over 60 years and will until we die and then we can see him again in person and they must have a great show in Heaven. RIP Mr. Davis.
this is his best live performance of this song .... WHAT A TALANT ❤💝💖
I view this once a week, and as a singer,I learn something new every time. Now that's entertainment!
Knocked that one out of the park...one of our greatest entertainers...I hope future generations can watch this and enjoy like we did (and still do) ...just awesome
Well, think we can all agree Sammy nailed that one, huh? All live, too, folks...
+Robert Mucci He nails every one.
JudgeJulieLit that can mean something different from your intention.....
The 'definitive' version
Sammy knew how to bring it. There is so much artistry and flare there it's impossible to describe.
Today's "performers" couldn't hold a candle to Sammy Davis and others of that era. They could sing, dance and act. All without the help from computer generated sounds and pictures. Their talent was pure.
My favorite of The Rat Pack. The voice, the range, the humor, impressions and dancing ❤
Who Can I Turn To ... one of the most beautiful songs sung by Sammy Davis Jr. That wonderful voice.
Absolutely!
I feel exactly the same way!!
Martha Gartsman
Thank you. My sentiments exactly.

the good work...thank you...
Oh My God this is Real singing and Musicality and Artistry. NOne of today's so called pop tarts can even attempt to sing close.
Not even Dean came close. Sammy was the greatest singer of the rat pack by far
Most versions of standards from that era nearly always find their very finest expressions in the Sammy Davis Jr. version. This guy was a singer's singer, a dancer's dancer and a showman's showman. Absolutely exceptional and far, far greater than all his peers, Sinatra included.
One of the best voices of the last century, so talented, brilliant at interpreting and delivering a song Sammy style, one of a kind.
*Frank Sinatra and all other singers can´t hold a candle to Sammy Davis Jr. Singer, dancer, musician, drummer, actor, etc.*
Great! Great Talent!
Sammy Davis Jr. was honestly the true star of the rat pack-- the most talented of the bunch, it's a shame that he wasn't given the recognition he deserved.
Tell it like it is! Totally agree, stellar talent.
Still listening in 2022,still enthralled by this awesome talent.💕💕
Sammy Davis Jr...was such a HUGE TALENT!!! the greatest of singers with soul..and overall genuine performer!! He should have been more publicly famous in this genre of songs....Thank you for posting!!
There was no one like or will there ever be a talent as gifted as he. Mr. Davis was without peers.
A very talented man.
Just fabulous. Truly magnificent. No one could sing like this man. His style will never be duplicated; his phrasing is his signature. I dare say he is my absolute favorite performer of all time.
This world will always need you, Sammy

With your kind permission, gets me too, who talks like that anymore, an absolute gentleman ❤
Sammy was by far the best of the rat pack , I don't know if he held them together , or humbled himself in there company, he should have had his own television show!!!
Agreed
+Judy Socket I loved all of them and not to make light of their huge talents, but I feel Sammy was by far the most talented of the group.
No doubt he was the best talent. But if you missed seeing him in concert then you really missed his "magic." Besides the personality that exudes from him, there is that little tiny body with these huge lungs .. the noise he could make was so amazing coming from such a small frame.
+dooma flatchie I concur!
Sammy Davis, Jr., did have his own television show at one point.
Such a humble and down to earth Man. I remember him when Mom and me listened to him on the radio. I love both of them forever.
The best version of this song I’ve ever heard
The best rendition of this classic song! Sammy Davis jr. with the most powerful voice!
Sammy's voice is perfect for Broadway.
One word.......... PERFECTION!!!!
He was Mr Show business and a voice that could soar above Sinatra

Sammy Davis Jr is one of my many classic Idols along with Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, Bobby Darin, Gene Kelly and the rest of the Rat Pack. Sammy though is the top of the list to me...
A more elegant time....thankfully we have these videos to still enjoy. Fantastic.
A friend of mine asked me once who I thought was the best all around male entertainer. It said Sammy Davis, Jr. He was trying to get me to say Michael Jackson but Sammy came to mind first. He is spectacular.
A most beautiful and magnificent human being …. Still my favourite of that generation 🎶🧐🥃
Thank you Sammy Davis, Jr. A very laudable song I like it.
Loved him for most of my life. I often times laugh or cry when listening to him singing. Once in awhile cry and laugh at the same time. He was a very special man. Real Cool.
That's the reaction our souls have to the perfect beauty we have been searching for all our lives.
Hey Bro u sound about Sammy
These guys certainly knew how to sing and entertain (unlike all the CRAP that is called music today)!
I agree 100%. it depresses me to see what music has become in the 2020's. it's shocking.
Such a beautiful song! I know many artists have probably covered this song, but in my humble opinion, Sammy's version is the best. There is something about his voice and his style that makes him so fantastic!
Not many performers demonstrated regard for their audience as Sammy Davis did. It was sincere.
WOW !!!! He is beyond belief....so emotional.....LOVE it. What a great voice
Unparalleled Outstanding in all of his performances. Unforgettable pioneering vanguard in the entertainment industry.
Paul Anka said recently in a concert that Sammy Davis Jr. was the greatest entertainers of all times.."nobody can touch him"!
Sammy Davis Jr. Is the only singer I listen to that gives me goosebumps EVERY DAMN TIME.
The 68 thumbs down don't know what class is
One of the greatest entertainers the world ever knew.
Very simply.....The man could do it all.....(and he did it all....very well)
i know everyone has their personal favorite, but sammy, dean and frank could all sing and performe like some damn pros, true true pros.
He just emotes the greatest of all musical sensations... Perfection..
As young people, whenever my parents wanted to get rid of us, all they had to do was put on Sammy Davis Jr or Nat King Cole records, and we'd take off out the door!! Sammy could do everything in the entertainment industry, as an all round entertainer he had no equal.
Sammy was a great entertainer that i always loved hearing sing. Thanks for sharing.
greatest entertainer of all time👌
Him and Judy.
The ultimate entertainer/performer. Sammy is the GOAT . . . End of debate 🙏
The greatest male singer of all time, bar none.
One of the greatest performers without any doubt , Sammy Davis was simply amazing !
I know Sammy's signing in heaven. Lucky angels!!!
I'm a music instructor teaching guitar, bass, and piano. I make all of my students finally get into jazz. I make them listen to the greats. These masters knocked it out, night after night. Great arrangement ....amazing vocal ....
God that voice gives me the shivers! What a talent!
This is called clarity of words even a person whose first language is not English can understand it. Now a days American accent is hard to understand.
a privilege to have seen him live
What a beautiful voice strong gifted artist RESPECT SIR RIP S.D.Jnr
Excellent, thanks needed this.
Saw him at age 10 or 11 in Golden Boy on Broadway-will never forget it.
If there EVER was a performer who could sing a song to perfection, it was SAMMY. What a booming, dynamic voice...
i had the pleasure of meeting sammy in harlem nyc 1974 WOW
Sammy was always underrated. Too many remember him for the "Candy Man" (his biggest solo hit), which is a shame because he could really sing. A great collection would be "I've Gotta Be Me" on Reprise. It includes this Anthony Newley gem and also "What Kind of Fool Am I".
Thanks For The Wonderful Memories Sammy taken far too soon
OMG There is nobody like this man, Stunning performances,
When I as about ten my parents took me to see Golden Boy on B roadway-which he mentioned briefly. One of my life's highlights. A WOW.
Classic Sammy! Wonderful. ("Golden Boy" ran on Broadway Oct 20, 1964 - Mar 5, 1966)
We miss you Sammy. The consummate performer.
BEAUTIFUL.......Sammy was so talented, one of the best entertainers ever.
