Josh Pyke wrote this for his young son, who at the time was beginning to grow up and learn to be more independent. It’s about being afraid of knowing one day they must start off and grow on their own adventure without you (hence that part where he’s on a treadmill trying to keep up with the growth on the screen behind him -it flashes to say 9 months- but watching the growth outrun him), but always wanting to be there for them regardless.
Looking forward to Josh coming to the UK , got my ticket :-))) travelled through Aus & NZ listening to his music ; but never got to see him live , finally will - can't wait !
Agree 100% Alex - an awesome song. I actually think Josh Pyke is one of Australia's largely hidden gem and one of the best songwriters/performers we have today. Keep up the good work Josh...!!
Leeward is the direction downwind from the point of reference (as opposed to windward which is upwind) so I guess he means that your leeward side is the part of you that's holding you back and forcing you to look back rather than having your face in the wind / toward the future...
Melle Beemster I don't know if Josh Pyke sails at all, but windward/leeward are obviously hugely important there. Leeward has big implications of being "below" you (wind is like gravity, going downwind is easy, climbing upwind is hard), or in your shadow (there is a 'wind shadow' on the leeward side of your sails where boats passing by lose speed, and also a literal shadow on that side of your boat because your sails are always on the leeward side)
i was soo obsessed with this song when i was in high school a few years ago... it’s still a bop
One of the most under-rated songs ever.
+Nur Alwani I agree!
+Nur Alwani I feel like that about most of his songs
Has to be one of Australia's best-ever songs!!
This video and this song makes me so happy
This song makes me pumped.
I'm overly obsessed with this song.
***** it stung me about two years ago and I'm still infected haha

It reminds me of thr mod wolf scene in the mighty boosh!
Blue eyed beauty!
So a cross between Mighty Boosh and Dig Dug?
Great song. Reminds me of Gotye, that's a high compliment.

What's a leeward side?

Um, Josh? I think you turned into a wolf. You might want to go and see a doctor about that.
