    These are very serious competitor's. They need our support now and in the future. This without a doubt is one of the hardest sports a person could ever master. These young women have mastered it.     As a competitive swimmer, I feel a sense of connection with other water sports and this sport is so impressive! I seriously don’t know how they do what they do! It’s like ballerinas that learnt to do tumbling and stumbled into a hip hop class but it’s all underwater like-

      So I played high tier division 1 water polo in college, and our school also had one of the best synchro teams in the country as well. We trained in the same pool as them and let me be the first to tell you, those women made us all feel like we couldnt tread water to save our lives. They are amazing athletes.

      I used to also do competitive swimming and man these women train just as hard and also have to learn choreography while doing it and all without goggles, incredible.

      Same! And I just realized that can’t even wear goggles! Not only can my eyes not stand chlorine, my eyesight is so bad I need prescription goggles during practice. I can’t imagine racing without goggles!

    I always wondering why the artistic swimming never got much attention as other sports in Olympics. This sport is extremely difficult and at the same time they are very enjoyable and beautiful.

      @@nick_h143 true , that as at the world championships now the water polo is on too and you have to be super fit , fast and strong to play at the elite level. How is that I know because I was part of the coaching team that Won Gold in Sydney 2000, the Australian women.

      Fun fact! They aren’t allowed to touch the bottom of the pool so all the lifts are just pure leg strength by pushing themselves up through swimming!

    I once saw a synchronised swimmer training in my local pool. She swam two lengths of the pool underwater without coming up for air! Amazing athleticism.

    The fact that they have to wear makeup without it running into their eyes, keep their hair from going into their face while going upside down and all over the place, synchronize themselves with the music while splashing all around witch creates muffling of sound especially while under water, and do all this without goggles is amazing

      Makeup is waterproof and hair is put into tight bun secured by many many bobby pins then slathered in Knox gelatin which dries like shellac. My daughter was a synchronized swimmer for 8 years. practices were between 14 & 20 hours a week depending on age. Unbelievable stamina conditioning and athleticism. It still amazes me!

      Actually, sound travels better underwater. There are speakers in the pool, otherwise, you'd be correct. They wouldn't hear any sound from outside the pool. 😉🙂

    I rewatched that first aerial toss several times at slower speed so I could see what she did in the air. Wow! It was so fast I couldn't even tell what was going on at real speed. Holy crap! Major skills!

      Maybe you can help me. This was an amazing routine. Can you help me understand the scoring process. I'm used to the 10s like gymnastics. Sorry for the ignorance.

      @@avishagisrael6386 maybe you can see the scoreboard at the end. This video is a free routine. There's 3 main scoring.
      For difficulty (technical aspect, highness of your eggbitter position, leg position). Art impression is for the artistic aspect (choreography, expression). And execution is how well you put those together in the routine, n how synchronized the move. Its kinda tricky n complicated.
      This goes as well as the technical routine. But for tech. R, there's couple of Requirements of movements that you have to achieve.
      For artistic swimming, the perfect score is 100. I remember that the highest score in whole olympics is around 98-99(?)
      I'm a former artistic swimming, sorry if its too long. I try to explain each scoring

      It's so unfortunate, this routine was incredible! They missed out by something insane like 0.1. This routine was by far one of the best of the day, but they just are not as strong as other countries in their technical routine

      I think some of them wear contacts with a very low prescription too so it’s not as painful to open their eyes underwater. Thought I read that somewhere?

      @@jodinewhauser9966 Nah, I don't know any kind of contacts besides maybe scleras (the really large ones, but they're not approved for use all around the world) that would stay in underwater... Maybe the hard ones, not the flexible ones? I'm not sure.

    this is one of the weirdest sports I've ever seen, how does anyone figure out that they want to get into this sport? it's such an interesting concept, it's almost like water cheerleading but with more of an artistic basis. so cool
    also how do they synchronise with the music?? they can't even hear it 90% of the time, are they constantly doing counts in their head?

      hello!! i am a synchronized swimmer and can answer your questions. like a lot of dance sports, its expected that you start at a really young age to get "good" or have any chance of competing professionally (not that i have ever or will ever compete professionally lol). i liked to swim and dance, so my mom recommended it to me and signed me up for classes when i was about 8. i liked it so i kept going. also, they can hear the music underwater! there are speakers down there. they stay synchronized based on counts of 8 rather than the music though. theyre expected to keep swimming even if the music cuts out.

      I was a competitive swimmer and had 8 years of classical ballet; synchronized swimming seemed the natural next sport! You can hear the music underwater. The training was difficult but I loved it!

      Competitive swimmer and did ballet for years. My high school had it as a sport and I had a lot of fun. I was the only competitive swimmer on that team. Most were gymnasts. Underwater speakers!

    When I learned this was an Olympic sport I was like ha! Whatever. But, after watching this routine they have my apologies and all my respect! It was amazing and must be incredibly difficult. I hope to see them/this sport continue to rep USA!

      Same here. I was just thinking this. I was not expecting this in the slightest. The last time I saw synchronized swimming I was just a kid and it was definitely not like what I just watched (still brilliant nonetheless) I am still in shock with how far the sport has come.

    What happened? The US used to be a powerhouse in synchro (artistic swimming). It wasn't a perfect routine, but they threw someone OUT OF THE WATER..... And then CAUGHT THEM!! How does this score so low??

      Agree! There is no art in this! They are good at what they do but it is not beautiful or artistic. Just a nice bunch of tricks. I prefer “ your grandmother’s synchronized swimming.”

      @@corrienotcorey It seems that because people try to cram in as much as possible during the time limits, there is no more room for slow movements. I prefer the greater artistic expression allowed when slow movements are included, and not just required figures in technical routines.

      Their team routine was fantastic but they faltered in their tech routine. The scores are combined free and tech, so bc of that fumble in tech it just wasn't in the cards :(

      @@forevarever generally there's three panels: difficulty, artistic impression, and execution. Height in the water and lifts add to difficulty, as well as distance traveled. Artistic impression can include creative choreography, facial expressions, makeup + hair, etc. Lastly, execution is just how well the techniques (jumps, lifts, hybrids etc.) are performed.       @@forevarever I might have misunderstood- there are two events. Tech team and free team are two different routines. The final scores are the total score of the two routines. USA did great in free, but they fumbled in tech team. Free team has more creative freedom, but tech has required elements and is more restrictive in what you can do.

    they're honestly really underrated, this sport is deceptively physically demanding, you can barely hear anything underwater, so you basically have to count by yourself when to lift your legs up, turn around etc., crazy stuff

    WOW...that was so beautiful and so entertaining. It blows my mind when they throw someone in the air knowing no one is touching the bottom, especially the height they threw them on the first trick.

      I didn’t see anyone else doing the high splits, double backflips (like a train) one after another, and lifts where the girl jumps like a gymnast on a balance beam and sticks the landing, as well as lifts at the very end and all done with amazing precision. This was a very difficult and demanding routine.
      Nope! This was stolen from them and I am disgusted that lesser teams like China and Russia (who cheat, btw) got in.
      I am a judge for synchronized swim and I know what I am talking about. That performance deserved a score close to perfection. Listen to the announcer, even she sees nothing wrong with that routine.

    So impressive!! Incredible skills and lots of creativity in creating the choreography! They are incredibly fast, incredibly strong and whoever created the coreo really knew how to showcase their skills and use synchrony to make the moves even more powerful!

    I thought everything was perfect. The timing was precise, the movements were 100% synchronized. It wasn't a frilly performance, it was techno and original. I think they should go to Tokyo.
