I agree re: the music. Have you seen this Gold medal ice dancing routine from the 2018 winter olympics: ruclips.net/video/wOEKdWrtz6U/видео.html Gives me chills!!! I am a former amateur synchronized swimmer from the 70's & 80's and qualified to judge the younger age groups. It is really hard to be a judge because one has to watch so much that is going on at one time. Just a cursory first watch of this routine I saw at least two moves that were not perfectly synchronized but thoroughly enjoyed the routine.
I think they will in the future. IOC/CIO is asking federations to have mixed events for each discipline, I hope for Paris, but most likely it will be in Los Angeles 2028.
As an amateur synchronized swimmer in the 70's and again as an adult in the mid-80's, it's fascinating to watch the progression of this sport. When I swam in the 70's we wore elaborate costumes complete with headpieces. Moves that produced splashing were popular. I competed in national masters when I was early 30's when swimsuits and, if anything, a very small head adornment was worn. The preference of that time was to cause very little ripples in the water so even with the same figures used in the past, they were done much more slowly, which made them much more difficult due to the preciseness plus being underwater longer, with more "slicing" through the water rather than splashing. It was at the masters in my 30's I first witnessed mixed teams/duets. I wasn't a fan initially, although men are able to support higher lifts of their partners as seen several times in this routine. NOW the pendulum seems to have swung back to splashing movements. I truly loved participating in synchronized swimming and can say it is MUCH, MUCH more difficult than it looks. Add in the necessary breath control while working one's body very hard and I have nothing but admiration for the sport.
For me, synchronized swimming is the supreme discipline of the Olympics. The complexity of this sport is unmatched by any other. I am still electrified in the face of Russian performances at the Olympics. The athletes have to be able to do pretty much everything that has to do with movement, dynamics, athleticism, dancing, jumping, spatial control, musicality and lung function (1 min under water at full muscular load). So the athletes have to excel in almost all disciplines. I dare to say: Synchronized swimmers must be highly intelligent! For me personally, they are the greatest athletes of all! Just look at the Russian teams! You can feel the perfection of their performances in every moment. Breathtaking.
@@1q2w3e4r5t6zism Agreed! I tell people it is like performing a figure skating/ice dancing routine while holding one's breath a good part of the time. I remember something my first coach told me - "Synchronized swimming creates lovely bodies; the movements stretch the limbs while building muscles as opposed to competitive swimming that tends to create bulkier bodies."
Trust me from having been a former synchro swimmer, it's not easy. A LOT of training behind the scenes, including exercises to build up breath endurance. For fun I used to go to the bottom of the 30 foot diving pool and see how long I could hold my breath. That was expending no energy. We swam miles and miles of laps at every increasing speeds and longer distances to build endurance. Also a lot of out of water exercise to help stretch muscles and regulate breathing was involved. Loved it!!
Where were I that didnt see, dont remember this??? SUPERB!!! This rendition of Roxane brings out the most fantastic performs. If any of you have never seen the Canadian ice skating pair perform this very song, just go now!! Their names escape me now but they were their golden couple, you cant miss it.
