I’m 77. I saw The Brothers Four in concert in the 60’s when I was in college. I always loved this song. We had good voices, great lyrics, melody, harmony, and community back then. I miss it. Now in 2024 I am grateful for RUclips for bringing these times back to us. We need this kind of port in the storm today.

It’s 2024. I’m 82. I still remember. Way back then I could remember all the words and sing every chorus with my old folk guitar. So many dreams,, so many years that pass.. It’s amazing that the Fantasticks" which included this song , was one of the longest running theater productions ever….im also amazed at how many of my senior friends are also tech-literate to find all these great songs. I’m in my 60s, and I feel your emotion, but I was white. The tragedy for me is that the innocence and safety was only for us, not for my Granny’s black maid and her son. Such a shame.
I often think about the long walks I would take when growing up. I had a special place, an old stream that had a car path but was a great place to "park" when I became a teen. There was a really big pike swimming in the stream that no one had ever been able to hook. At the end of the stream right above the river it was dammed up by a lot of old branches that made a swimming hole. I'd stay there for hours just enjoying the quiet and watching the little fish jump. I remember one time catching about a 1/2 dozen chubs and taking them home for my mother to cook for me. Yeah, I can remember.

We had a very old tree shaped like a Horses back and neck that several kids could "Ride" on at a time ( It would have been an old Native Marker, intentionally bent), I have often hoped that nobody chopped down that Tree overlooking a Bay on a Point that we had..I can still hear the sound of our Summer Place door closing and smell the Kerosene Lamps..I too would spend Hours just exploring and being a kid.. NO Cell Phones, No I pads, plenty of Mosquitoes.. but in so many ways life was far simpler and more enjoyable.. LOL We had NO Electric or Indoor Plumbing by my Grandpa's Choice.. BUT we were "Privileged" as we had TWO Outhouses and a Massive Ice Box... Yuup Those were the Days.
This reminds me of being a kid in our family room, and my Dad would play this song on the record player. I wish I could go back to that time just for a moment, and hug my folks.

And the Fantastics---Yes, back when people used their IMAGINATION to enjoy different scenarios and didn't have to wait to be told how to think?
I think you're right there. But also, call me ignorant, but I prefer to think about things in a more positive light. There is a lot of garbage being created by singers and bands nowadays, that I will never deny, but try to remember that there is a lot of people who agree with you, including musicians. Something I LOVE about RUclips is that it allows the creativity of people to flow. There're beautiful covers like this, and there are so many musicians that I think you would enjoy. But your points remain valid. I think it's important to not get stuck in the past and go searching for what you want, in a time that is not the same as it once was. Call it evolution, or advancing, some things get left behind and some things get pushed aside, but they are still there. The trends change, but if you look hard enough, you might be surprised. Excuse my philosophical rant, haha.
My dad was always hard on me, pushing me to do good in school. A stark contrast to my mother, she would play this for me on piano. They both died December 16, 1991 in a "car accident". I hope they'd be proud of me and how I'm running the family business.

I'm 63. I think I belong to that last generation who can remember the world when Christ was king in the West. Schools still had religious education, and Christmas wasn't just some stupid gift-mania holiday. Courage, Honesty, Self-Sacrifice and Sentiment were values that weren't mocked. Then something all went wrong during the late 60s... and I remember how different and ugly things in my teen years in the 70s had become. Everything was smutty and cheap. A spirit of fear and distrust took over. I miss my early childhood... not because I was just an innocent child; but because innocence and decency were still valued back then.
I have had a chance over the last 10 years to visit sites of the Civil Rights Movement of the 50's and 60's with young folks - and I am have lots of faith in them and hope for their future.

Maybe the sad thing is they DO right in this way, and the "geniuses" who decide what will get air play don't play them. So, IMO, across our nation and the world, these sort of songs "will not sell", or so the geniuses have decided. But then someone like say loreena mckennitt comes along and decided she "doesn't buy it" (that the geniuses in he big studios run the world) and she goes out, sells her self made songs, at festivals, small events and so forth until the geniuses decide to "give it a chance". So it still happens, I am glad to report.

"Try to Remember" back when singers actually used to listen to each other with great intonation, to make beautiful harmonies AND ACOUSTICALLLY with no electronics except for microphones that amplify what each one is doing, instead of just having to resort to screaming into it ? The song takes on new meaning now in 2020,, Doesn't it ?! And the Fantastics---Yes, back when people used their IMAGINATION to enjoy different scenarios and didn't have to wait to be told how to think?
I think you're right there. But also, call me ignorant, but I prefer to think about things in a more positive light. There is a lot of garbage being created by singers and bands nowadays, that I will never deny, but try to remember that there is a lot of people who agree with you, including musicians.
Something I LOVE about RUclips is that it allows the creativity of people to flow. There're beautiful covers like this, and there are so many musicians that I think you would enjoy.
But your points remain valid. I think it's important to not get stuck in the past and go searching for what you want, in a time that is not the same as it once was. Call it evolution, or advancing, some things get left behind and some things get pushed aside, but they are still there. The trends change, but if you look hard enough, you might be surprised.

My dad was always hard on me, pushing me to do good in school. A stark contrast to my mother, she would play this for me on piano. They both died December 16, 1991 in a "car accident". I hope they'd be proud of me and how I'm running the family business.

I'm 63. I think I belong to that last generation who can remember the world when Christ was king in the West. Schools still had religious education, and Christmas wasn't just some stupid gift-mania holiday. Courage, Honesty, Self-Sacrifice and Sentiment were values that weren't mocked.
Then something all went wrong during the late 60s... and I remember how different and ugly things in my teen years in the 70s had become. Everything was smutty and cheap. A spirit of fear and distrust took over.
I miss my early childhood... not because I was just an innocent child; but because innocence and decency were still valued back then.
I have had a chance over the last 10 years to visit sites of the Civil Rights Movement of the 50's and 60's with young folks - and I am have lots of faith in them and hope for their future.
September 25, 2024. I am 69 and I well remember hearing this as a young boy. It was a great tune then & it even better so many years later.

Maybe the sad thing is they DO right in this way, and the "geniuses" who decide what will get air play don't play them. So, IMO, across our nation and the world, these sort of songs "will not sell", or so the geniuses have decided. But then someone like say loreena mckennitt comes along and decided she "doesn't buy it" (that the geniuses in he big studios run the world) and she goes out, sells her self made songs, at festivals, small events and so forth until the geniuses decide to "give it a chance". So it still happens, I am glad to report.

Also I love that the focus is on the music and the words and the feeling they convey...not about the personalities or looks of the singers.

Yes, it IS heartbreaking. The music of this type, style was to be enjoyed. It was not written to "make a point" It was and still is beautiful. Like all things God has given us music became polluted, politicized, twisted. Man takes every beautiful thing he is given and defiles it.
