    I had an issue with the premium ultra fine, which was the 8x3 stone I bought after really liking the standard ultra fine 6x2 stone. I found it wasn't giving me the same edge and the only difference I could tell was that the premium had a glassy smooth, polished finish while the standard was rougher. So I lapped the stone to a 400 DMT diamond finish and found it to work much better. I'm not sure what others have noticed, but I find it very slow and hard to hone on the highly polished (what many call burnished) finish. I would recommend to anyone having problems achieving a sharp, smooth edge to try roughing up the surface.

    You could do a Friday special on strop paste like variety of grits they have and how they can be used to keep edges going between honings as a quick fix , like if you’re in a rush to go to work and don’t have time break out a stone.
    Or do a paste progression after a bevel set and see what the results are like

  • @xxXXCarbon6XXxx
    @xxXXCarbon6XXxx 2 года назад +3

    Hardly surprising it was user error. I missed what the K rating was on the hone, I just heard "ultra fine". It would have been good to have seen you kill the edge on the Gold Dollar, then do a hanging hair test once sharpened. I'm 100% sure it would have passed, but it would have been good to fully demonstrate the hone.

    • @AdventuresInWetShaving

      Great question xxXXCarbon6XXxx! ;) The rating on this hone is somewhere in the neighborhood of 12-15k, but now it's rated as most other natural stones so it's an Ultra Fine. I too believe it would pass the hanging hair test as well in a full hone.

    I personally think many who are early in their honing journey do not spend enough time on each stone and dont know when to progress. • @AdventuresInWetShaving
      @AdventuresInWetShaving  2 года назад +1

      Great question Юрий ! Sure thing... you can set the bevel angle by keeping the edge and the spine of your razor on the stone at the same time. I use a 1000 gritstone (the Surhiro) using Half-Strokes 40 on each side (and yes I will count them to get even wear on each side), then 20 Half-Strokes on each side, 10 Half-Strokes on each side, 5 Half-Strokes on each side, followed by 10 cleanup Axe-Strokes. Next, you can test the bevel by wetting your thumbnail and dragging the edge across your thumbnail from the heel to the toe with only the weight of the razor. If the edge feels like it is trying to dig in the full length of your edge you have successfully set the bevel and now you can go through your honing progression. Please let me know how you get along and if you have any other questions, my friend! :) #Heart

I've used mine for close to 4 years & Never had any problems. I would say it's User Error. I don't use the Slurry Stone I use the under running water method. If you ask me I think the user did something to the slurry Stone so it would scratch the ILR so he could return it because someone told him a JNAT is better but that's my opinion. I Agree with Paul! The customer did lap the hone when he got it. When it came back to us, the stamp on the face of the hone was gone. We left the hone EXACTLY the same as it was when it came back. But, we did re-stamp the face. Nothing else had been done to the hone.
      I specifically told Eric in my letter to him that if our hones do, in fact, produce chipped edges, he should let people know and they should avoid our hones completely. As I suspected, there was no problem with the hone. But, that's the kind of confidence I have in our products. I really do want people to have good gear (whether it be ours or someone else's).

    • @AdventuresInWetShaving

      Great question Юрий ! The sharpening angle is set when bevel setting your straight razor at the beginning of the honing process. But, I believe you are wanting to know how you could use your ILR as a finishing stone. The way I use my ILR is under running water with Axe-Strokes or X-Strokes until the blade starts sticking to the stone with little to no pressure. Next, I will strop the blade 7-10 laps on smooth leather, followed by Axe-Strokes or X-Strokes until the blade starts sticking to the ILR stone with little to no pressure. Then Strop 40-60 laps on smooth leather you should be able to tree-top hairs (cut the hairs on your arm halfway up the hair, without the blade touching your arm) with ease. @@AdventuresInWetShaving and I assume you gave the honing stone away long ago ... I just found you as I'm trying to get a new edge to my German Dovo 6/8 Renaissance blade which never worked well. Turns out it's edge requires honing before use. Beautiful gold edged with Spanish wood but I never knew that it required an initial edge.

    Hello. I think this video should have included pictures taken with the microscope, put as a comparison, because the blade blade shaped like saw teeth, with the microscope is best observed, or the magnifying glass but under a strong light but you can not take pictures.
    Personally I would like to see a video reflecting my case:
    I bought the following stones: Shapton 8k and Naniwa12k (both splash and go) under DrMatt's guidance to maintenance the straight razors. Then I bought Naniwa 1k and 4K, Atoma 600 grit, 2 adjustable supports as you have in the video. I bought a 60x magnifier recommended by you, which gives me a different perspective, but a microscope would be much better, especially since you can take pictures. I have tried sharpening and maintaining blades under different techniques, with slurry and without, with pressure at first and then without pressure, with the circles method, then inclined, then straight, then the method presented by you...the fact is that blades that used to cut now don't cut anymore, they started to show chips on blade and small nicks. The blade cuts in the first phase at the WTG stage but at ATG on certain areas it jumps over the hair or is more painful, i.e. it pulls out. From what I have spoken with other guys I understand it is because of the slurry, although many people use this slurry in their sharpening procedure. After 4 years of trying a lot of products in the wet shaving category with DE razor, I switched to straight shaving category which I actually fell in love with and which reassures me a lot when I shave. I've invested a bit in all the products I have, I'm also on the forums, but this maintenance stage doesn't work, more than that I shave with both hands and quite quickly. This I would like to see how to sharpen a straight razor whose blade shows nicks (chips), how to get past them and more than that I should know from what they appeared. Thank you very much and only from Romania.

      Gurlui agreed microscope picture would have been nice, but I just didn't think about it.
      Great suggestion let me see what I can do for you I have a straight razor that will only work for a couple of shaves and then needs to be re-honed. Maybe it has the same problem as yours.
      Thanks for your great comment and suggestion, and thanks for watching! :) Take care and stay safe, have a great week my friend! :) #Heart

    I would like to be entered into the giveaway, however, I am currently a de shaver and I am very curious about straight razors. I would like to see how a newbie could get into straight razors on a budget. Thank you

    Can you give me a help for removing the stings of my straight razor? I used trailing spine strokes on the 12 k and also vertical strokes on the stone letting the razor flat. I also tried stropping 100 strokes on ieans. BUt it stings and doesn't slide well .It meets resistance in advance In the cutting. But the worst is that stings. I improved because before it cut the skin letting hole on the skin! I have done a regular progression 1000, 2000, 3000, 5000,8000,12000, 30000, but the results are poor!

      Zen will your straight razor Tree-Top hairs halfway up on your arm? What do you mean by vertical strokes? Please let me know more your edge should be light-saber sharp. The Thayers Witch Hazel does a fine job removing the sting as an after-shave.

      @@AdventuresInWetShaving Yes the razor cut the hairs of arms. Vertical strokes means this: put the blade flat on the stone in the direction of the toe and centered in the stone and make a movement back ( moving the blade outside the stone) and forward ( moving inside the stone) on the stone like I saw in some video to remove burrs but didn't work too much! I found the product but I don't need that because the problem is the razor.If I use a shavette it cuts,loke butter!!! So it is the blade!

      First I would remove the burr by stopping Zen. The second may be your blade has too shallow of an overall bevel angle... I like right around 18 degrees total bevel angle (this is adding both sides together).
      I hope you had a wonderful holiday season buddy! :) #Heart

      Sorry but yours answers were not correct! The angle bevel was perfect and the strop could not remove micro burrs of a certain size! Now that I am a master I can remover any kind of burrs or chips!!! It costed me a lot!!!!!🤐 That stone has been tested by others people on you tube a microscope put in Evidence the big and numerous chips it created! By eye you cannot see anything!!!! You need a lot of enlargments or put it to your skin!!!🎉 A gold dollar is not a good tester!!!!!🎉🎉

    It's a proven fact that hones don't chip blades. Idiots that don't know what they are doing chip blades on stones.
    Love my ILR stones.
