+stevedrums +Hattori Hanzo Yes, the match is up here - ruclips.net/video/0YRhugCEto4/видео.html. There is some confusion over McGraw's death due to the air dates - the match was actually taped on October 22nd; McGraw passed away on November 1st with the match airing Nov 2nd.
As a kid, I was such a mark for Quick Draw. On the few occasions that they gave him a win, I was over the moon. He and Special Delivery Jones were so good at putting over the heels.
Piper exemplified everything that made wrestling entertaining, he made everyone around him interesting and better even if they weren't that good or interesting
Rick McGraw was a fantastic wrestler and worker. For a guy, who was only 5’7” tall, he had to be good to survive in the WWFs land of the giants. It’s a shame he died so young.
@RedneckSpaceMan About 2 weeks later but this aired the day after he died on TV. McGraw had 4 more matches after the Piper beatdown, and didn't sell any effects during those matches. He lost to Randy Savage, beat Mike Sharpe and lost to a masked wrestler.
@@Jinzo-dy3th How did it take balls for Rick McGraw to slap Roddy Piper when Piper knows that the script calls for Rick to slap Piper, and Rick knows that Piper would be upset if Rick did not slap him?
Greedy D Bret Hart mentioned in his book that when the wrestlers would visit Dr. Zahorian to get their steroids, McGraw would walk out with bags of stuff.
@@travismcdonald6576 Yeah, but on top of steroids, he was known for painkiller abuse. To the point that Bret Hart said he would often be completely out of it. Which undoubtedly led to his early death.
This was almost certainly taped the same day they wrestled although it would air a week later. They did multiple weeks of tapings in one session. McGraw wrestled 4 more times after the Piper match, without showing any signs of a Piper beat down. It's all TV and his death was just a coincidence that is was the day before this aired on TV.
Piper goads abd then provokes McGraw into slapping him (though in too kayfabe a set-up) and then beats the crap out of him a few days later. This Piper's Pit was aired 10-26-85, yet the "subsequent" match was taped on 10-22-85, according to All Out Of Bubblegum. Does anyone know when this Piper's Pit was taped? It didn't run LIVE after the match had been taped, did it?
Thank you for your prompt and knowledgeable response, AOOB. This was an odd situation, a major heel provoking the sturdiest of jobbers, but the strangest was when Piper (in Piper's Pit) verbally abused the hapless sad sack Frank Williiams.
The confusion between Piper and the Bodyguard after Mcgraw slapped Piper shows that they didn't even rehearse and did this all on the spot. At first the Bodyguard was about to chase and then Piper looked as though he was holding him back. Then randomly, the bodyguard grabs Piper. This is still way better than rehearsed promos in the last decade🤣🤣
For his size, And he was undersized. He was a really talented wrestler. There was a myth that because of the match with Piper, was what caused his death. Then, I found out that they were friends all along
You never heard what happened to guys back then the company never acknowledged why they weren't with the company anymore. The greatest example of that was Jake the snake, he just disappeared, but obviously now we know he had issues with drugs.
Rick Mcgraw is much bigger and stronger than Taz, mite of been the same size but power, strength , and in ring skills wise much better than taz...taz had more fat and gurth, Rick was all muscle and power and was more ripped. Taz was shaped like a egg, Rick Mcgraw had a weist line and muscles. I WOULD say he was bult like Dean Malenko.,
McGraw died 6 days after this Piper's Pit appearance. RIP to both.
+Hattori Hanzo Did they ever wrestle? I forget.
+stevedrums Indeed. The match has been uploaded on this channel. I believe McGraw died later that night or the next day.

in 1985 I remember this angle and thought Piper killed McGraw

U and me both..a brutal beating I thought he really killed mcgraw
Man, Piper was a great heel.
This is where I learned the word mediocre. I was 8 at the time.
Congratulations
And then we come to find out years later that Roddy and Quick Draw were very good friends
I knew that for a long time.

WOW Quick-Draw Rick McGraw!
Great posting
Great addition to your channel.
That was the weakest slap in history! haha. Miss the old days
Were they planing to push McGraw in a feud with Piper?
notta
How much juice was Rick taking. Damn
Greedy D yeah I said the same thing
Greedy D Bret Hart mentioned in his book that when the wrestlers would visit Dr. Zahorian to get their steroids, McGraw would walk out with bags of stuff.
Enough juice and painkillers for him to drop dead at only 30.

And Rick didn’t make it past a week.
Kayfabe was so real that my dad and many others though that Piper killed McGraw!!
Actually I did too. Piper beat the crap out of him when they wrestled.

The bodyguard is Cowboy Bob Orton Jr. a great wrestler in his own right and father of Randy Orton
Crazy he died 6 days after this! 😥
That's why he's Quick draw Rick McGraw.
You can tell this is beyond kayfabe, there had to be something personal between them and considering how stiff Piper was in their match

Rick McGraw: "Why don't you think about this for a week?"
well It's not like you're gonna get one...
Very sad. Had Rick McGraw lived I could see him morph into a gimmick character in late 80s WWF or have a decent run in WCW.
Roddy piper vs Jimmy snuka
too much potential lost as a mid carder
