@@afterdarkberrios Eddie Vazz and the MIDI Boys - Something Never Meant (Chip Chop Beats) was hands down one of my badest secret weapons Djing back in the early & mid 90’s. So many of my dj friends have begged for that record which I blacked the label out. The other bomb of yours is that Jammy - Walk Away which was a massive record in the San Francisco/west coast breakbeat and house scene. YOU DEFINITELY LEFT YOUR MARK ON THE WORLD BROTHER!
I remember back in the day collecting any record if it had a specific producer or edit engineer (Carlos Berrios). We didn't know who these guys were, what they looked like or if they even knew we existed here in Dallas. Obviously the internet was not available to us at that time so it was a total mystery to us. But here we are 30 yrs later and I'm seeing the actual edits for made for Corina.........it just blows me away. I worked as a DJ/Producer for a radio station and had to edit my own phone bits, for me that was the worst. I once sliced my finger really badly in the middle of my Top 9 at 9 show trying to get my phone bits edited for airplay. I remember bleeding all over the console while I was on the air. What you do is truly an art..........I can't thank you enough for sharing this video.
Amazingly, as fast as we used to cut tape sometimes, I’ve never cut myself. But I have come close, sometimes cutting a nail, but never skin. Thanks for sharing!
This was really useful - I just came by an MTR-10 which was pretty dirty and watching your video helped me to disassemble the top of the deck for cleaning and lubrication of the capstan :)
Always a pleasure to see and hear your work! I was wondering. Toward back you had a video of you showing the cutting and splicing of how you do it. Do you have the video of you showing how you do the edits? I would love to see it as it is such a talent that many few know the behind the scenes work that goes on doing the edits!
I’ve been wanting to post a video of the actual editing process. I’m hoping to put one up soon, and I do have footage of me editing “Running Redux”, I just have to edit it down to something watchable. The process can be quite tedious to watch in real time.
The Otari MTR line is what we normally would see in many studios. The Studer was known to be a superior recorder, but it was too difficult to perform the type of editing that we did on those machines. The only Sony’s I ever saw were the MCI’s that Albert Cabrera of The Latin Rascals used at Arthur Baker’s Shakedown Sound. Those machine’s also looked like they were difficult to edit on.
I forgot to mention that I live in San Antonio so I could easily drive to Dallas to pick up. Analog Rules! Almost finished with a big band jazz album done on 2" 24-track Sony MCI and want to mix to 1/2 two-track.
The calibration process in the manual, and can get a bit overwhelming without the proper measurement tools. But I found my own way of getting it done. I may just make a video of how I calibrated this particular machine.
At 5:13 you can see a fast run of tape edits really close to each other. I believe that once a couple bars are edited like that, then the editor can loop that segment and re-record it in a longer pass. For a better view slow down youtube playback.
Originally we worked with two machines side by side, both calibrated to match. Working from the master tape we would copy pieces to the second machine and do our edits there. If we created a one or two bar pattern that was too complicated to recreate, we would move that edit to the first machine, then copy to the second so that we could extend the pattern and add additional edits to give it movement and life. Mostly fills and other sounds to change up the pattern.
@@afterdarkberriosThere are a few of us out here who really want to see a documentary representing you guys, chep, little rascals, dino, etc. It would be dope. Hopefully one day!
Hi Carlos, are you interested in selling your Otari MTR-12. I'm definitely interested in buying it. If not, do you know of anyone wanting to sell either and MRT-10 or 12? I have a studio technician who will convert a 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch if I can't find a 1/2 inch.
DA FREAKING MAN!!!!!!! Cut & Paste KING! OG Style with a real razor and tape.
This is amazing and humbling.. I get so happy when I can seamlessly repair a tape that snaps.. LOL..
Thank you so much for posting this. Music history right here.
Thanks for watching!

I’m glad it helped!
That was pretty high quality edit tape, that it still sticks!
Video of the year!

Nice! SUBSCRIBED!
how does the otari 12 compares in sound quality against the otari MX5050 or studer A810 or the sony 5003?

I always wondered what are those white pencils for marking tape edits? Where can I buy them?
They’re grease pencils that you can pick up at any art supply store.
I want a Otari
yo C.B. thats official tape still played its still taped up too lool awesome
1/2” or 1/4”? Beautiful machine!
This is a 1/2 inch machine.

@@afterdarkberriosWhen you say that you would move the edit back to the first machine, would it just be a short piece of tape like a bar or two?
