    I had a case of a stuck tape in the K mechanism. In my experience when I remove the screw from under the cassette basket (at the 6:36 timestamp), I never put it back. This is particularly useful when you work on NV-HS950. This unit has an inacessible loading motor assembly, so you cannot eject the tape manually when it is stuck. I ended up breaking the cassette basket because the screw was inaccessible, had to borrow another basket from a mono machine. In the case of the NV-HS1000, you can access the worm gear from the bottom of the unit just as you shown, which is kind of cool about this VCR.

    you are pretty brilliant. Its sad that eventually there will be a time that VCRs will no longer have any technicians left to help fix them.

  • @gavsmith1980

    In my particular non-ejecting scenario, I found a quicker way of getting the tape to eject - I removed the spring from the pinch roller mech (the one you found disconnected in another video about the K drive) and the loading worm drive had enough grip on the loading motor to remove the tape.
    I suspect, among all the other mechanical resistance putting torque on that plastic coupling between the motor and the worm gear, that small but strong spring is just too tough for the coupling to survive indefinitely.

    The long awaited video, great work! :-)
    If the mechanism is also completely jammed with a cassette loaded (or 900, 950), only loosen the 2 accessable screws in the back from the housing and wiggling it up until the metal gear gets free helps.
    Alignment is done in cassette down position. Then you can easily check the marks.

    I enjoy every video you make, even if you don't get the result you wanted.
    I've been there too.
    My mum worked at g.e.c in coventy i think, and roughly around 1947 when she would have been 20, she hated wiring up the telephone switch panals, so many wires to solder and the wooden cases split far too easy.
    She also worked at Alfred herberts (she loved that place) and "The hood and side screen."
    The clutch i would wipe with metholated spirits and do radial 1200 grade sanding on the smooth plastic plate, then add more tension to the spring, or add washers to compress it.
    That machine seems rather touchy, there is no forgiving of an imperfect drive :-(.
    I was there with you looking in that box, back to the past i went mentally, videos were fun to repair :-D.
    The Tip41a was my favorite transistor for any power regulator, well over board and never failed again lol.

      GEC were once a huge company. At one point an uncle and myself both ended up working for different parts of the same business, and doing the same job, even though we had never met. But years earlier when I was a kid, he would leave boxes of electronic goodies at my grandmother's house for me to play with. My granny called them "silicon chippings" which was close enough. He helped inspire me in electronics. The factory I used to work at is still there: Plessey Semiconductors, Plymouth.

      I learnt by taking things apart, school was very confusing for me.

      Yep Plessey, i've seen that name on a lot of parts, another good company.

      VU meter brightness: First check that it looks the same with the front removed. Contamination on the plastic cover can cause this. Otherwise, it's likely to be VFD poisoning and there's not much that can be done other than try to find a good used replacement.

    If the coupling on the loading motor fails can the deck emit a screeching sound? I have this on mine, the tape laces but the pinch roller doesn't descend and push against the capstan. When trying to eject the deck screeches. Also, have you seen any error codes the service information mode associated with this problem? Thanks.

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  9 месяцев назад

      Yes they can make a noise as the pulley slips on the motor shaft. But it's possible your deck has a different fault, it's impossible to say without inspecting it. If the deck can't complete some part of the load/unload cycle, it may produce an E code on the display, exactly which one may depend on various factors such as where it got to.

    • @PaulsOldVids
      @PaulsOldVids 9 месяцев назад

      @@video99couk thanks for replying. MY deck just goes back into standby mode when it decides it can't fully load/unload and if you power it up the same thing happens again. Interestingly the service information mode suggests if I understand it correctly problems with the Cylinder!/capstan but I wonder if that just might be because the deck is not doing what the controller expects. I am going to take the loading motor out and and have a look at it just to see.

    i have a NV-HS1000 and it has the same exact set of problems, hard to rewind and slow at fast forward, it gives up, tape slacking, but the loading and ejecting are fine... i watched almost all of your video, did you happen to succeed at finding what's the problem? is it really the clutch? (i don't think so honestly)

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  7 месяцев назад +1

      Clutch wear can cause it not to go into FF/REW modes. But being slow may be a different problem, or it may be excessive friction in the clutch. The difficulty with these decks is it's very hard to watch the mechanism when connected to the deck, so you may have to use the loading motor to get into the FF mode and then turn the capstan motor by hand and look at why it is struggling. To do this, you will have to take the deck out.

    • @PosthumanKindergarten
      @PosthumanKindergarten 7 месяцев назад

      @@video99couk sorry if i'm making you waste time, i know i'm not paying you... it MAY be excessive clutch friction, it plays well but sometimes it chews the tape on the upper edge when fast rewinding (or trying to), and it gives up and retries with the pinch roller engaged (winding slow but winding), but i noticed something, if i press the brake arms (the tesioners, one with the lasso brake on the left and the one with a brake pad on the right, the ones that that adjust the braking automatically with tape tension) it rewinds and FF perfectly and fast, but i have to keep em pressed with a stick, and i also noticed that when it slows down gradually sometimes (cos it's faulty) also the capstan slows down (it remained a bit dirty and i see the dirt spinning slower), so it MAY be the clutch too tight... but before i make it into pieces i'd really care for an opinion
      EDIT::: i believe i fixed it or at least it's almost perfect now, the problem was apparently the height of the tape, there are the two white rollers that put the tape around the drum head, and i unscrewed those rollers a bit and it stopped wrinkling the tape in rewind and it seems more free now, it looked like a friction around the drum head, i had a bit of troubles with the audio head cos it needed a bit re-adjustment but it seems pretty ok now

    Great video. Information about how to remove the loading motor where very clear.
    I wonder if you could give me a hint what to do next. I have an HS1000 which cannot fully lace. The P2 and P3 arms go 3/4 of the path length then the tape is ejected. There is no error message on the display.
    I changed the coupling inside the worm drive following your instructions with a new one.
    But the problem still persists.
    Can I try to diagnose something through service menu? Is there such thing?
    Thank you in advance.

      UPDATE: The P2 and P3 won’t go to the end of the path because the pinch arm was stuck on the shaft. The old grease was hard.
      I removed the pinch arm and greased the shaft. After that the P2 and P3 arms starts to work almost OK and the lacing was complete.
      I believe I have to re-grease all the unit because the image is jerky (hope I said OK) and the lacing is slower at the end.
      I saw this problem on a lot of units on RUclips and on a lot of different forums.

      Very hard to debug remotely. Main suspects would be a CPU error perhaps due to bad capacitors in power supply or elsewhere, or maybe the mode switch needs cleaning. It may not be trivial to repair and will need the service manual and some serious attention.

      I've often wondered about that myself. The AG version has a simpler remote control. But is there a difference in the machines themselves? Well it's only an impression I get, which might be due to chance, but I think there is less video noise from the AG version. At one point I thought that the AG version lacked the head cleaner since I have three AG-4700 machines which lack a head cleaner, but then I got one which does include it. That is the capstan motor brake. I can't see why it is engaging when it shouldn't be. You need to take the deck out to see what it activating it when it should not be doing so. Trouble is you can't do much with the deck out of the machine, that's a bit of a failing of this sort of design. You could get brutal and cut away the plastic which covers part of the deck so you can see its operation better when it's in place. So alas I don't have an immediate suggestion for a fix, you will have to examine it in more detail.

      There are lots of possibilities. Make sure that no debris like a sticky label has got into the machine. It could be due to the mode switch which isn't that easy to fix unless you know what you are doing.
