- Frank Luntz, FIL Inc. pollster and political strategist, joins 'Squawk Box' to discuss his focus group results with Gen Z voters, their view on capitalism vs. socialism, equality vs. meritocracy, their view on democracy, and more.
We have socialism for the rich, bail outs when they make bad bets, and austerity for the poor.
That's not socialism that's called corruption.
When Gen Z is graduating college making 55k and the typical house is half a million dollars, yeah I think there will be some resentment.
That actually is a problem in perspective. Most of human history has been suffering and leading difficult lives. Humans have existed 100,000 years, mostly hunting and gathering. Mostly doing agriculture for 10,000 years. Industrial revolution about 200 years ago, internet in mass 30 year ago, smart phones in mass 15 years ago. People today have access to more information than the most powerful people in the 90s. The period people think back to was the 60s which was short lived and they were small houses, small rooms, small garages because people didn’t have the same amount of stuff as today. No AC, no insulation, no fridge, no stove, microwaves were expensive, 1 car, 2-3 bedrooms for families the size of 7-8. Americans today have much more access to quality of life than previous generations. We also living much better than just about most human beings on the planet. Life is hard and always been hard. Sometimes we have to count our blessings.
Lots of chastise houses but all don't want to live within your means. Entitlement. You'll learn however when you adopt socialism and have to stand in bread lines

I feel gen-z's problem lies in they've watched too many online losers complain rather than live their own experience so they think everything and everybody is the same. There are no exceptions or subtleties in their thinking. All hyperbole based on fear. Its basically a very conservative thinking generation even if they are more liberal politically.

He’s speaking out of both sides of his mouth. Capitalism is not working for these kids, he says. Then he says they’re being taught that it’s not working for the kids. Capitalism has taught them that it doesn’t work for these kids. The wealth gap needs to be closed, and we should prevent companies from buying favorable government treatment.

The kids are being taught socialism because they’re not being taught free market/supply side economics why it’s moral. It's not about "socialism vs. capitalism", it's about the old social democratic system we used to have that birthed a fairer, more accountable form of capitalism vs. whatever hyper-late-stage overly financialized corporatocracy that we have today. Capitalism isn't just a static thing. It comes in different forms. It morphs over time. We're not asking for Soviet socialism. We're simply saying that today's system isn't sustainable. It is very possible that no other president in history did more to destroy the middle class American Dream than Reagan. He single handedly started and perpetuated the unraveling era (3rd turning), which ultimately climaxed and ended with the GFC (the start of the crisis era, 4th turning). Does it sound like Gen Z wants those things?

California Gen X here - 52yrs old - I have Gen Z kids graduating college this yr and in 2027. I can tell you their generation is screwed for home ownership if they want any chance to live in a coastal or desirable Blue city like Denver/San Diego/San Luis Obispo area... The housing costs are out of control, much worse than the peak of the housing bubble in 2008! I bought our first house 45 mins north of G.G. Bridge in Sonoma County and paid $325K -11/99. It was a stretch making only $40K at the time and that house is now $900K. Now a starting salary for non-engineer is 50-70K in CA. That salary to home price ratio is broken! This is why Gen Z should be furious... The American Dream is a distant reality if they want the life there parents had. For reference my parents paid $30K for their house in the Bay Area in 1971 and my father was an attorney making $35K at the time and it was a stretch for them I heard. That same $30K 1971 house will be sold this summer for $1.9 million with NO updates. GenZ will be forced to live in flyover states if they want any resemblance to quality of family life and not be house poor tied to a montlhy mortgage of $5K+

The US is not capitalist. It hasn't been for a long time. Taxpayers money is used to keep a few large corporations in power. Several of which would not exist anymore if it wasn't for the bail out from the American people.

After the English Civil war there was the enclosures.
To me, this was the start of Capitalism. The enclosures of the land, and the ability to find a market price, based on the productivity of the land.
This was what the property system of the USA was based on.
There's problems with governments voting their property prices to infinity, and has been since these initial experiments.
There should be incentive to care for the land, but on the other hand we should recognize that factors such as low wages or limited borrowing capacity can and should decrease property values.
There's also rights issues for people that don't own property. What's the point of having rights if you're always on someone else's private property?
The American system is beginning to look antiquated. The moderating forces of democracy and socialism appear to have had not enough effect.
It's a system that's had repeated dramatic change in the past to deal with exactly these forces.
I think the ideological battle is mostly a distraction from looking too closely at how this economy actually works, and for who.

Gen Z here. I've got to say to that one co-host, the education system is NOT the problem here, in my experience it's generally capitalist leaning outside of some college campuses where it's mostly just students that're left-wing activists anyways. I have no clue why anyone says otherwise.
The real issue is a combination of systemic problems (which Frank Luntz covers OK) that keep things from working well for everyone in a stable, sustainable way & radicalization on social media (which is dominated by a vocal minority that constantly posts about everything in the most dramatic, hyperbolic terms), where people are constantly exposed to negative information about anything & everything. Inevitably, that'll warp your worldview in one direction or the other.
For a lot of young people, it's Alt-Left narratives that are the most compelling because of the way they address feelings of exclusion & mistreatment by "elites" that, at least seemingly, hold onto power for decades & engage in unethical stuff with little accountability. Gen Z is the most focused on powerful, wealthy people misusing their power to limit competition, fend off changes of power/ownership, mistreating workers & consumers, abusing new technologies & overusing natural resources that we rely on & have to inherit.
This is a good take, though I think you should take the quotes off the word 'elites' and also your last paragraph is at odds with your first statement about education. One of the two speakers here made the very important point that in history, every time socialism and communism has been tried it has led to the subjugation and deaths of 10s of millions of people.
I highly recommend watching the recent speech at Davos from the new Argentinian president. He references some truly incredible statistics.

Meanwhile, at least my younger self was educated through books, and reports from reliable institutions. These days, it seems like there is a heavy reliance on the internet for all of information, education, communication and entertainment, and unfortunately most people vastly under-estimate the effectiveness and relentlessness of those who are using it, explicitly, to confuse, corrupt, distract and destroy.

Most of them happily cheerled us into an unjustified war in 03'. Every last one of them favored high immigration rates to benefit the elites with cheap labor. Almost all favored continued racist policies against white Americans in gov't, education, the corporate world.

Let’s see…40 years ago, one person working 40 hours per week can raise a family, purchase a house, and save for retirement. 20 years ago, if you were working full time at a minimum wage job, you could still afford a two bedroom apartment in most of North America. Today, the kid could land a job making $50K and will STILL need a roommate just to stay above water.

A truck driver made the news recently, he was a recent graduate. He decided to drive trucks and live in his truck for two years and he calculated he would have enough to purchase a home and do all the things. There are ways but sacrifices definitely part of it.
I think for me, it was about seeing my poor dad go through hell. My mom died, even with life insurance, we had to use that to pay off the cancer bills. He was saddled with her student loan. All of us were under age 10. When I was 10 and I sat in my bed, processing the news, I took a deep breath and said “this is the day my childhood dies”. And it was so true. I developed health issues but couldn’t pay for it and either could my dad, so I’m disabled for life now
I work in IT but there’s not a day that goes by when I don’t think about how traumatic my childhood was and how my dad won’t be able to retire

The central nexus that nearly all problems in our society come back is money in politics. You wonder why Americans have so many chronic illnesses? Big food and drug companies lobbying and donating to politicians to not regulate food and drugs properly via the FDA. You wonder why there is a tech oligarchy of 5-6 companies that create all of our technology and make up all of the gains in the S&P500? Big tech companies lobbying and donating to politicians to create favorable laws and regulations for them, and to not trust bust them. So many problems come down to this, but most people don’t see it.

The problem with our political system is the hijacking of the voters' role by corporate entities and large donors. There is very little left of voter mandate when special interests get to fund career politicians in Washington.

Reagan's policies were strategically sensible at the time. Clinton ought to have revised them, but he was too corrupt to even try. Obviously, Bush was also too corrupt. Obama simply hates America and was happy to continue the sellout. Trump made the first effort to halt the de-industrialization of America--and he was attacked by the entire ruling class for cutting in on their massive corrupt conspiracy against the people.

It's not necessarily capitalism but the current paradigm of mutant capitalism that has taken hold in society. And by extension all of the inequities it creates and perpetuates. We are already in a Corporatocracy and are lying to ourselves if we think otherwise. The will of the citizens are being undermined every single day by special interest groups, namely corporate interests and that of the hyper-wealthy. I'm a millennial and Gen Z saw what happened to us collectively. We bought in and the system sold us out. They are keenly aware of this and don't want to be exploited like we were.
You can't stop that from happening without heavy regulation and social redistribution of wealth. Otherwise, capitalism will always end like this, someone will always win, buy all the other guys, fix the prices and buy the politicians. There's no other end point without more social intervention.

You change the political/economic system and you will still have the same issues. The difference now, is the greed is controlled by people in the government, who now control the military, so it’s even harder to make changes because they tend to use the military against people who disagree with them. Which thus leads to atrocities. As the saying goes, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” I don’t think we will ever create a perfect system unfortunately. All of them have wronged humanity in some form or fashion. Each system attracts those who wish to control others. Millions of humans have been murdered to advance far left and far right political systems (Mao’s China, Stalin’s Russia, Hitler’s Germany are three biggest ones that come to mind) in which the government tries to control the means of production as well as redistribution of wealth. Everyone knows Hitler killed millions of people, but so did Mao Zedong and Josef Stalin, who were, from a political system standpoint, opposite in ideology than Hitler. So it really doesn’t matter what the system is, someone will use it to exploit others. The biggest thing is everyone wants the opportunity to succeed, the disagreement comes in how to do it. Regulation is necessary but over regulation then becomes the oppressor as well. So you have to find the right balance of refereeing the field without preventing people from succeeding. Ethical capitalism is I think what could accomplish this. It’s a complicated issue that I don’t think we can come up with a simple solution for.

But right now we are too far to the right. The government has next to no power and these private enterprises have too much.

The school of life is educating them (not the public schools or liberal colleges, sorry), every day when their hearts are longing for a chance to have the opportunity to "work more and get more". But working more hours for a corporation or company that pays as little as possible to the employees while requiring college degrees and also not contributing to society by way of taxes is not the "opportunity" Gen Z should be grateful for. The inequality is growing so much, there isn't really much opportunity unless you get lucky or come from money.

Going to disagree - everyone in America has the opportunity to succeed and get a high paying job, and move up. It's the easiest country on this planet... Granted it takes hard work and flexibility. Most college graduates are not flexible enough to get a high paying job. They mostly have their eyes glued to office/corporate world and outside of vocational work. Also they are trained to be anti capitalist which puts them back even farther. Some of them are also glued on living in high cola areas where its impossible to make money out of college because of high rents and wages are not high enough to compensate.

Govt deficit spending is being used to "stimulate" the economy which benefits... private sector actors and inflation through those actors hiking prices. Inflation has already cooled down in parts of the world - e.g. Europe - which didn't unleash that sort of deficit spending.
And that deficit you mention is certainly not being used to help the young, but boomer entitlements such as social security.

There really is such a thing as *too much* wealth concentration, *too much* vertical integration, *too much* top-down, corporate control, and insufficiently broadly distributed access to resources to provide the reasonable equity in opportunity necessary to alow for both a just system, and, also, a sufficiently dynamic climate for the growth and innovation needed to compete in the world economy.

Frank's characterization that students are taught to resent capitalism is wrong. Well, at least a blanket statement like that because that is not true. In my experience, professors do try and walk a middle line to encourage debate among students. I went to school for Finance. At no point were we taught to hate capitalism. Younger generations are rejecting the values of capitalism because time and time again their generation is getting screwed by all of the older generations in power. The fact of the matter is that income inequality is getting worse, the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.
It is also disingenuous to bring up extremes like Socialism leads to communism. That isn't necessarily the case. Even now, the US isn't a strict laissez faire capitalist community, there are social aspects of America. I think what younger generations want is to have a fighting chance to prosper and not live in a society that only rewards the uber rich.

@wnose The utility company that supplies power to my home is a co-op, and such is employee and user owned. So is my telephone/internet/cable TV provider. The supermarket where I do my grocery shopping is employee owned. Just like any other business it mega-corp, they each have jobs that start at minimum... and have high paid top-tier paid CEOs.

My 28 year old daughter is now the Director of HR in a VERY large, very recognizable name in the theme park industry (4,500 employees) because she had virtually no real competition to actually be successful. She is good at her job for sure, but 20 years ago she would have to put in at least 10 more years to even be considered for the job, there would have been to many other competent people, now companies are becoming desperate for anyone with an actual brain and common sense.

Capitalism is great, in theory. Just like Socialism or Communism is great, in theory. Anything left unchecked with eventually destroy a part of the society under it. Everything needs checks, balances and keeping the corruption out of it. Socialism and Communism in the countries that follow them are highly corrupt and have no checks and balances. America is very quickly becoming more and more corrupt without anyway to actually implement checks and balances when the ultra wealthy and corporations, essentially don't have to follow the law.
"The colleges tell the students that they are not getting a fair shake." And then they see the stats are realize that it is true. That is the problem with capitalism. It is not that it doesn't work, it doesn't work for enough people. We're talking laissez-faire capitalism. Republican style.
Why are they not thinking outside the box? Form groups that work together to cut costs, to create jobs, to educate each other, to buy a first, modest home together. It is easy to complain. They do have reasons to complain, but how many are living home and saving? How many are working two jobs? Will some of them inherit homes? Many of us older folks did not buy our first home until we had worked our butts off. These kids have legitimate concerns, but they also need to take responsibility for solving the problem. Socialism expects someone else to solve their problems.

Did any of those countries rescue allies into winning WW2? Did any of these countries invent airplanes, computers, phones, cellphone, internet, gps, e commerce, social media?
Scandinavian countries are not socialist AT ALL. They all have freer capitalist markets than the US. They use capitalism to power their economies and encourage entrepreneurship so their government can afford social programs. social programs are NOT socialism. All of the scandinavian countries encourage private ownership and in the 80s when Sweden strayed away from capitalism it almost destroyed their economy. Socialist lie and say those countries are socialist when they are really capitalism done right.
Those Scandinavian countries have - on numerous occasions - reiterated the fact they are not socialist countries. Many of those countries have a freer market than we do (less regulations). The difference is higher taxes and more social programs.
The problem for the US is twofold: first, we not only pay for our own security but theirs as well. Second, the fact our government is incompetent. Just look up how much we spend on the VA which is single payer healthcare for about 2% of the population - now multiply that by 50. It basically comes out to 4.5 trillion dollars (for healthcare costs only, not benefits) which is what we spend on healthcare as is. The difference is that money will have interest on it because it will be debt, so the cost is much higher. And that money will be taken out of the market since health insurance companies are not only part of the market but also invest in the market.
We already spend more on interest for the federal debt than defense!!!! This is unsustainable and one of the main drivers of inflation.
Additionally, those countries have historically been healthier, happier, and with more social cohesion. America is a poor comparison because we are a chaotic country with massive debt, unfettered immigration, and a security guarantee with the majority of the world.
Lastly, while I am no fan of our system, the fact is a lot of innovation in healthcare is the result of our system because America is where you can make your money (developing drugs is expensive). Additionally, much of the knowledge for drug development comes from federally subsidized research at our universities..... despite this we get charged the most.
Single payer in America means the government sets the prices. One possibility is the government looks out for consumers and cares about its deficits; the result is less innovation (the chance of this is near 0). The second possibility is the politicians hook up the big cooperations as they usually do and treat our deficit (its debt and interest) as a non-issue. The result of this would be EVEN HIGHER costs, EVEN HIGHER inflation, and EVEN HIGHER interest payments.
I would recommend you move to a Scandinavian country but they likely wont take you since their recent immigration has greatly strained those social services you love so much but unlike America, their politicians seem to be doing something about it so don’t count on citizenship.
*socialism does not mean social programs, it means a centrally planned economy, which given our bloated regulatory state means we are likely more socialist than Scandinavia. We get more socialist every year - its why our economy gets worse and worse

The worry for the new generation is that they are growing up in a comfortable environment. They have all the conveniences and hardly ever face the hardships of their parents' generation. It will be problems when they face an economic crisis. Because their normal life will be difficult because of high expenses.
