I dont know if you got the meaning of this song it's not about personal space it's about a student who's in love with her teacher and he does everything in his power not to reciprocate

Made glaringly clear by the reference to Lolita "that book by Nabakov."

If she had got the real meaning, what the words were really saying, she would have said something, I know her history of commenting. It went over her head, she was too much into the vibe rhythm of the music!

She loves the crappy live versions and doesn't even give herself a chance to hear the studio version that was the hit song. She's really denying herself a chance to listen to these songs in all of their glory and why they were so good to begin with and why they were hue hits on the charts.

Believe me in the 80s they were driven by financial gain. They embark on a marathon world tour that went for 7/83 to 3/84 105 concerts making 142 million

As a young band trying to get gigs in London The Police shared rehearsal space & sometimes even PA systems with young Reggae bands & that mixing somewhat informed their sound - that's the 'Island' flavour you detect. It was the same for many bands of that era - you can hear it as clear as day in The Clash's music.

It's a great warning to adults who work with adolescents. It's never o.k. even if it's the youngsters idea. I'd forgotten Sting was a teacher. In his day he might have needed to give some version of this to a student.

      This song always hit hard...
When I was teaching (in the mid 80s), a teacher who had worked in the same school was accused, at his new school of having molested a student. It got to trial, but on the stand the "witness" admitted she and the accuser had made it up because he had given them failing grades.
Just after this, I had a student who had a crush on me show up at my door, dressed in a Madonna-style camisole top, ostensibly to be reminded about her homework assignment. I had already been considering changing professions; this was the final straw; a single guy - an outsider in a close-knit small town - if she made claims, who would be believed?
Conversely, though, two teachers from my high school were charged just yesterday, more than 40 years after. There had always been rumours; sad it took this long for the victims to feel safe enough to come forward. And yes, I believe the women; there were too many stories across a number of years. I expect more to come forward.

I was fortunate enough to see The Police live at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland Maine in 1982. Let me tell you, it was an unforgettable performance. Stings bass and singing was excellent, Andy Summers melodic guitar and Stewart Copelands amazing drumming was eargasmic. But sadly, they broke up in 1986? Amazing music.

Sting really was a teacher and apparently this song is based on his personal experience. The shirt he is wearing is 'The Beat' an English Ska band from the early 80s. You could check out 'Save it for Later' and 'Mirror in the Bathroom'.

Andy studied classical guitar in college which he incorporated it into his Reggae punk rock style playing.
Side note, Sting was a English teacher as well as a soccer coach before he hit it big.
Stewart Copeland was a trained Jazz percussionist.
With there 3 different musical style they created an amazing sound

The original version of this song is a bit sinister in tone; this version is very light and upbeat. Both great, but it's almost like hearing two different songs. I love Police in all its forms, so I don't mind, but yeah, I don't see how Police is going to get into your PD club if you keep listening to these versions of their songs. Lol. X) This was fun, though! Thanks for the smiles. :)

I was 17 when this was released back in the days without cell phones when we actually had to get together in person. Can you imagine a group of 17 year old boys clowning with this song the day it dropped . I am so glad TikTok wasn't around back then. There are some songs the minute you hear that catch in the verse that sticks to you forever and is always good memories. Something about witnessing the music progressing from the 60s to present in real life has been amazing. Also I got to be in a couple operas, musicals, and even was on stage with Sadler Wells Ballet Co. In a production of Swan Lake..not because I could dance. Just because they needed a semi graceful young man to be a monk and not fall down. Just want to say thanks for your reactions and bringing back some good memories with your reactions Brit. 😊

"Elementary school chant" is not far off. So talented, and so borderline creepy. lol! Young teacher with a cute teenage student? A story as old as modern schooling. They might have been the best artists ever at coming up with good melodic hooks for song, which is wild, because they're also very sophisticated lyricists. They also like changing things up - you can tell they're gifted and get bored easily doing songs the same way all the time. Sort of like U2 in that regard. Some of the Police's older stuff really goes heavy on that island vibe - "Canary in a Coal Mine" is SO FUN. Have you reacted to "Roxanne" yet? A slow, somber song, but still have some island vibe to it.

Britt please react to some Chris Ledoux. He is an icon. One of the greatest Bronx riders ever, cowboy extraordinare. Plus being Garth favorite singers of all times. They were best friends. He also sang with Jon Bon Jovi, Charlie Daniel, and Toby Keith. Their duets with all of them were phenomenal. He is fun and great song writer. He died fairly young of cancer.

I'm done with reviewers listening to live or alternate recordings of songs. That is not the way to get a proper first impression of a song or artist. Very rarely is a live or alternate version as good as the studio version, sometimes you miss so much of the song. Studio first, then other versions if you want.

Britt is mostly cute, but she does sometimes get so full of herself that she completely misses either lyrics that are obvious or the song in general. Truth is that she's getting a little hard to take these days. Oh well.

Over the last year she has gone from really listening to music, rhythm AND LYRICS to interrupting so often that I feel she’s losing the overall theme and flow of many songs. She is quite smart and often funny and adorable but the reactions are getting tedious IMO.
