Wayne Thiebaud is an American painter best known for his still lifes of edible treats and everyday objects in his singular illustrative style. His most popular subject matter includes colorful cakes, slices of pie, candy pieces, such as lollipops, and the winding streets of San Francisco.

What do you mean by edge
"Edges" in paintings are where two areas meet, such as the contour of an arm against a background. I think he meant that in Vermeer's work, that the edges were soft or diffused, or blended, so that they weren't distinct. I don't know if I agree or not but I think that's what Thiebaud meant.
