I've noticed that ACX AI becomes ultra skilled when the player completes multiple missions in succession without failing. I've also played Operation X multiple times, but one day I played and finished all ACX's campaign in succession Ace difficulty without being shot down and immediately afterward I started playing this mission. All the enemies were much more skilled than before re-playing the campaign; Scarface 1 was nearly impossible to defeat, he pulled the most impressive maneuvers I've seen an AI do in AC. Pure epicness from beginning to end; I can say that ACX has the best (and most underrated) boss fight of the Ace Combat series.
I can confirm. ACX has lowkey the hardest A.I. you can find on any other series especially with Ace difficulty. Its enemy ace is left to be desired (Alect), but the mooks are far aggressive and frantic especially in large number, it even makes that one intro in "Mayhem" become so real like you're inside the chaos.
This game challenged me in ways, I couldn't imagine. I still have nightmares over trying to beat End of Deception II on Ace. Missiles in this damn game aren't slow and telegraphed like in AC7; they're like a crazed lovechild between HVAAs and QAAMs.
i remember first getting this game and making the learning curve from easy mode(3ds default) to regular controls; still blows my mind how now im considering how many missiles a ship/enemy needs to be destroyed, mastering gun kills, speed stalling & overshoots, the right special weapon for the plan, holding O and watching the missile land, even maneuvers. Basically everything changed how i thought during place of ACX. i would like to thank the game as well for challenging me
This is why I love Ace Combat X dogfights over Joint Assault Here, the enemy AI does extreme manouvers and moves very smoothly Instead, in Joint Assault, they just fly in a straight line and turn left/right or even drop/gain altitude, but that's rare. You can notice this easily when fighting Varcolac Squad. The aircrafts don't "fly" as natural as they did in X Also the AI in Joint Assault is really easy, even on Ace (except during the naval fleet on the final mission, that is hard) In Ace Combat X's Operation X, the Falken are geniunly good with the lasers, instead, in Joint Assault's Operation X, they don't even try
A trick I found to make any dogfight in ACX easy (aside from the Fenrir one because of the camouflage) is to stay low to the ground (50 to 150m/150/450ft) This is also the case for ace combat x2 in some cases (Final boss). Either A. It's "realistic" by making radar less effective due to the increased interference from the ground, B. The enemy pilots don't know how to handle low flying planes because they aren't programmed to do so (Prevents them from phasing through the ground like some planes do in End of deception I/II) or C. The programmers snuck in a way to make the game somewhat manageable on ace mode to S-rank without resorting to cheating
You know, I've played this game for so long, but I never specifically tried that. Not that I haven't fought close to the ground before, but I can't say I noticed that then. Also surprising to hear they don't fly through the ground then, I'd assume that would only make it more likely.
TugaAvenger In my time playing, the only time I saw the enemy phasing through the world was through Archelon fortress, probably due to it being one of the very few huge structures in game. Mt. Nevera has phasers too I suppose but that is difficult to prove. This just shows that the AI doesn't really have any way of avoiding obstacles, so they probably just have a minimum altitude that they can descend to, in order to prevent players from complaining about the ghostly planes. The fact that they can phase through Archelon fortress indicates an altitude restriction, since the map is 90% water and making the planes zoom above 2km all the time would make the missions way too easy. What I've noticed in this strategy, specifically in operation X and Atmos ring, is that the enemy planes (aside from Z.O.E. and Scarface 1) will just keep circling around your position at 1-2 km and never get a really stable lock on if you do the same at 50-100m. In the case of mission 12C Wild card it's actually dramatically easier to avoid planes hunting you down by cheesing them with the low altitude flying trick. Sometimes the AI rages out because of you doing this and they just flee at unrealistic speeds and accelerations. All in all it's fun to nitpick the AI of an ancient game on an ancient console. Just a shame that this game is as good as it is and no handheld titles since could even come close to what this offered. Disregarding Joint Assault because that game was a paradox of design choice. Another quick thought, I feel that flying close to the ground only gives the enemy only 1 viable "angle of attack" on you, namely from behind and above. This makes it even easier to avoid missiles since the only realistic way to get hit is from behind. Good for them to have stealth planes I suppose.
Also works in Ace Combat 5 when you are betrayed by the 8492nd. If you fly low, you can "lose" the extremely fast SU-47s and then come back for cheeky head-ons
Or alternatively, use the Fenrir, fly low, wait for the enemies to drop altitude and bust out the thunder nuke. Every enemy aircraft short of Z.O.E and Phoenix dies in one hit.
I know it's become somewhat unimpressive for us in this post Ace Combat 7 world, but I think this mission marks the first time in the series that NPC fighters could effectively use weapons like the TLS (aside from Pixy, who I don't think has ever even grazed me with the thing in all my years of play). I remember the (Razgriz?) four-ship group of Falkens being a real bear if you don't deal with them quickly, since they can rather competently use the weapon. On the flip side, dealing with this and the Butterfly Master's drone cluster has made the full complement of weapon UAVs alongside Hugin and Munin from "Dark Blue" seem somewhat easy by comparison.
I miss this game. This was my first Ace Combat game and I still remember only using the raptor going through the campaign and Operation X in Ace difficulty. The X button got screwed up afterwards lol

I wish the guns didn't just magically hit a bandit just because the aircraft datum or whiskey marker is over the aircraft. I wonder what the devs were up to if they couldn't have leading shots with guns in the game.
