This is going to age like congratulations (fine wine). Thanks for all the music reccs! Btw my interpretation, which others have also seen, not just me. Phradies song is about Andrews 2 year old daughter. He said such. I Wish I was Joking has major midlife crisis, parent struggles vibes. Then loss of life, then Mother Nature, then a infatuation love song, then learning about society (people in the streets) It really sells this album as a cycle of life album. Bubblegum dog being an angsty young man running from the truth… etc. Learning Phradies Song was about Andrews daughter is when it all fell into place for me.
Loss of Life Pt 2 3:07 Mother Nature 4:58 Dancing In Babylon 10:15 People In The Streets 15:05 Bubblegum Dog 20:36 Nothing to Declare 25:42 Nothing Changes 29:12 Phradie’s Song 35:42 I Wish I Was Joking 40:35 Loss of Life 44:16
Loving the reaction. I love this album. I have listened non stop since it came out and still find something new to like. Songs that weren’t faves at beginning like Dancing in Babylon or Nothing to Declare are now on constant repeat. Every song has something to it. Can’t say that about many albums nowadays. It may also connect better with a certain generation. (Not calling us old LoL.)
You always bring a level of energy to these reactions that is infectious. This album finally clicked with me a few days ago and it’s been non-stop since then. Always love seeing you enjoy these releases!
43:36 tinfoil hat time: this is a reference to one of my favorite songs ever "The Joker" by Fatboy Slim ft. Bootsie Collins, where he literally goes "some people callin me the gangster of love". if so, GG MGMT, deep cut, love y'all.
The amount of props by the time Nothing Changes starts and you're looking for more 😂 Awesome time mate. That knife was scaring the hell out of me. I am a huge MGMT head and felt like I was hanging with a friend just as obsessed with them as me. This is my favorite MGMT record.
bro i remember watching your mgmt reactions when i was in college, crazy its been that long. Not gonna lie I skip a few songs on this album but its growing on me for sure, still have the singles on repeat daily
Nice video! Been a while since I've commented. This was my first time actually hearing this album. I appreciate the sense of diversity in how each MGMT strives for a new approach in such a maximalist way. Fun to see your reaction to it!
I love Nothing Changes but the elevator music instrumental fucking kills me 😭 i love the lyricism and simplicity of Nothing to Declare. If you haven’t checked out the Bubblegum Dog music video yet it pays homage to all the old 90’s grunge music videos
poem reading from track 1: I am Taliesin. I sing perfect metre, Which will last to the end of the world. I know why there is an echo in a hollow; Why silver gleams; why breath is black; why liver is bloody; Why a cow has horns; why a woman is affectionate; Why milk is white; why holly is green; Why a kid is bearded; why the cow-parsnip is hollow; Why brine is salt; why ale is bitter; Why the linnet is green and berries red; Why a cuckoo complains; why it sings; I know where the cuckoos of summer are in winter. I know what beasts there are at the bottom of the sea; How many spears in battle; how may drops in a shower; Why a river drowned Pharaoh's people; Why fishes have scales. Why a white swan has black feet... I have been a blue salmon, I have been a dog, a stag, a roebuck on the mountain, A stock, a spade, an axe in the hand, A stallion, a bull, a buck, I was reaped and placed in an oven; I fell to the ground when I was being roasted And a hen swallowed me. For nine nights was I in her crop. I have been dead, I have been alive. I am Taliesin.
I litterally a few days ago mentioned for you to check out MGMT album 5 since it just came out. it blows my mind after just 2 days after me asking you to view this new one and your doing it already. Many before me must have recommended it to you before i did.
amazing, went to check if u had gotten around to this yet and u just uploaded it. love it, your reactions are awesome. lol @ reading the wrong lyrics, it be like that sometimes
Amazing album! Went back and watched your reaction to Jean Michel Jarre - Equinox as you mentioned him here. Would love for you to react to more electronic music, such as Vangelis - Albedo 0.39, Susumu Yokota - Sakura or some Aphex Twin
Also, that ‘The Boo Radleys’ reference is the reason I keep coming back to your videos, your niche musical knowledge has helped me find several new artists I’d never heard of before. Thanks, M6!
Definitely an album that needs more than a first listen, it took me 5 listens that brought me to the conclusion that it is based off a lot on midlife crisis scenarios.
I knew you would get a bit of a kick out of the new MGMT album 5 Loss of Life. I believe this new MGMT album is a more mature MGMT album. I love all the songs.
What are your thoughts on the album after presumably digesting it a bit more? Any change of opinions on tracks? Nothing To Declare still your least favorite?
I definitely suggest GUM / Jay Watson from POND whom else I want you to check more of whom all came from the circle of Tame Impala. The are all like best friends growing up and all becoming famous,
i think the mixing is HORRIBLE. especially how hollow the low-end is, and how tinny and crappy the 6Khz to 9Khz. love this band, but dave fiddman dropped the ball, old ears got no business mixing records.
@@mercurialno6 agreed. i dig evrythng MGMT has ever released. this album has a serious mixing/EQ issue and no one ever seems to mention it amywhere. /: there's so much awesome bass work here, the rhythm section is on fire, but then in the final mix of it all ; those parts were essentially muted. when i remastered it myself i pretty much fixed what i consider to be a broken album. don't you think the S sounds are especially painful on 'mother nature' for example? and, where's the kick? its in the performance but all the life has been drained...OUT OF THE ENTIRE ALBUM. and as much as that sucks, it took 2 mimutes of EQing for me to fix what was broken. and who gets paid the big bucks? not me. dave friddman. his most recent record American Head with The Flaming Lips has a similar issue, though not nearly as devastating.
I suppose some 'sounds' are artistic choices. Some albums are 'dated' by the tech or fads of the day. Some classic albums have terrible drum sounds or are washed with too much reverb. I thought the D'Angelo album I just reviewed sounded quite lo-fi. That must have been an artistic choice? It would be interesting to speak with these guys and ask them what they were thinking. I'm sure it's often mistakes and incompetence. But I also know some circumstances where the producer is saying "I can't believe the band wants it to sound like this"... and vice versa.
I will be posting Lana Del Rey Born to Die on my Patreon this evening. www.patreon.com/mercurialno6 It's a good one!

People in the streets and Nothing Changes are both genuinely awe-inspiring as a musician

This album is filled with so many bangers. But it feels so real and human, I love it so much already
People in the streets is the best song ive heard so far this year. Unbelievable track
When the stars align for this band they produce absolute gems.
The cry I had listening to that song was well needed 😮💨
100 percent ! I love that song so much I play it on repeat
People in the streets and nothing changes are my fav from this album
I agree. Best song of the year.
HALF OF LOOOOVE
*IS STILL LOOOOVE*

Seriously my favorite of MGMT’s. Maybe more than Oracular… just an emotional gut punch of an album in slow burn psych pop/rock

Such a roller coaster of a record. Absolutely loved it !!!!

Long live Mercurial number 6
The first 5 tracks of this album are so fucking good. Still growing on the back nine.
Also, that ‘The Boo Radleys’ reference is the reason I keep coming back to your videos, your niche musical knowledge has helped me find several new artists I’d never heard of before. Thanks, M6!
Coming back to say the album is a 10/10 - the back half has grown on me so much & the 1st half continues to amaze.

Not yet.
Definitely an album that needs more than a first listen, it took me 5 listens that brought me to the conclusion that it is based off a lot on midlife crisis scenarios.

I like your tshirt today MN6, tuning in on a saturday morning (or caturday morning?)
My face lit up when I saw this released
I still need to finish my collection of MUSE and POND in vinyl leaving POND the hardest to collect and i don't like buying anything used.
Will you be listening to the new Justice album when it comes out?

Plenty of shit-sounding records mixed by young ears.
