In 1983 in UK Tories under Thatcher won a massive election victory.If the system was rule by the people then what followed should not have happened.In defiance of her policies there was a big miners strike,a big strike in the newspaper industry,other strikes less well known,and then massive protests against her taxation policies in levying new taxes on the working people.The government did not often claim they were carrying out the will of the people after winning the election but relied on the police and armed forces to contain the protests which had significant support amongst general population.
