I started playing Cumans after you posted it on Patreon and have been enjoying it, so thanks for that! I've tried Cumans against the AI, and I didn't realise how wasteful I was being with not utilising the double TC at its full strength. So thanks Richard & Hera :3
When i saw the dark age, I was first surprised he is 1200 elo. Then i remembered the rule of thumb and realized his feudal must be abyssmal. And alas: he lost to 8 archers without building a single skirmisher.
To be honest, breaking 700 is a matter of having hotkeys and knowing simple build. I have a couple friends who were all below 800... they did everything with their mouse and felt overwhelmed all the time... I got a couple of them to learn at least a few basic hotkeys and got a basic build to follow (20 pop scouts into knights, 22 pop archers and the cuman two tc thing respectively)... suddenly they improved dramatically even if your opponent is playing the right counter unit or has the correct gameplan against you at this level, he's still losing because of execution with hotkeys and not having to think through their build... playing flexible is bad when we're stuck with low apm and few hotkeys
@@zaratrustamaster Yeah I second this. Learn basic hotkeys for farms, houses, TCs, production buildings, and you can rise from 700 to 1000 elo even without following build orders.
As someone who's most in depth AOE2 experience has been playing the campaigns on moderate, this level of focus is wild to me. But I definitely have to remember the 12 Farms for 2 TCs thing. Is it a flat 6 per TC scale?
Hera could you make a video on post castle age walling? One thing that has always bothered me is all the “wasted” buildings made in pro games. Buildings that are just placed randomly inside of your base post castle age. Isn’t any building capable of being made into a wall? Even post castle? I’m imagining if players used buildings to make internal “corridors” inside of their base that would go around all their farmers, for example. And then late game if cav got in it would be an extra layer of protection. Or if they used those castle age buildings to plug the holes that inevitably get made in the feudal walls from the trees that were chopped. It just feels entirely possible for players to continue walling in a much smarter way as the game goes on, and it seems like a missed opportunity that they don’t. I get that late game it’s easy for units to break in so it’s not “worth it” but it seems like marginal effort to be intentional with building placement with a neutral impact at worst. At least you have more time to react for raids? Imagine then you wouldn’t even need defensive castles? It’s bothered me so much over the years I have considered making a RUclips video just to talk about this even though I’ve never made one and I don’t play aoe2. Just a huge fanboy who loves to watch and cheer you on :) Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

If you check the resources, you will understand. He mismanaged the food production and was low on farms, so after making the barracks, he realized he needs more food so he prioritized that over archery range. Hera has explained nicely why this is a mistake

I am stuck at 920 elo. I defend with skirms against archers if i cant go offensive in feudal. But i get castle dropped whenever my opponent reaches castle age first. I am trying to add villagers and military so it becomes hard to stop it. I am consistently losing to this. I try to go for 4-5 vils on gold, 1 on stone, and 10-12 each on food and wood in feudal. What should i do?
make a few archers or scout your self to gain map control so he cant come forward, after that if you cant do damage go up castle age yourself, or try to defend with the minimum number of skirms, so you will have more resource to go up faster than him
No idle time and spend ur resources. If he is mining stone u should be able to go castle first cause u should have more vills in food than he. Also, u should be able to have more army since ur not mining stone, so the problem must be u idle too much and dont spend ur resources asap!
just want to share with you guys, when im around 1200, i lost because im fck up, has a hole in walls, lost too many scout, get cheese strat, which so far its me to blame. But when I reach 1300, i constantly get kicked in the face back to 1200, i feel like Nokia company, I didn't do anything wrong, the walls was fine, the bump was good, tc no idle time for a long time, making counter, good combo, but somehow I... lost. They're just better than me.... yeah...
The biggest problem in ~1200-1400 is just purely greed. People think they can get away with making zero army till THEY attack because they think an idle few units is a waste of res that is going to lose them the game. If you aren't 2k+ you aren't defending with vills and walls unless you commit an insane amount of vill time early to full wall - but even in that case its just more efficient to make a racks/range and skirms (or racks + spears vs scouts) instead of losing all that vill time on walls and walling behind when the inevitable attack in Feudal comes. Once you adapt your mindset to not try to "skip feudal" and go with the playstyle of being aggressive and taking initiative and map control first and eco second you'll go from 1200-1400 to 1600-1700 with no other changes. But for whatever reason so many people just flat out lose games to the most expected basic attacks because they undervalue having a few counter units around in feudal or overvalue how far "behind" it puts them. Its like they almost always assume their opponent is going naked FC and are more scared of being behind in vills rather than being scared of just flat out losing the game at ~ 13 - 15 mins. In this case red even got fletching and turned up with 5 archers. Blue saw the blacksmith and range at ~11:20. A whole 3 mins ingame to know archers are coming (people dont make buildings for no reason unless its like 500 elo). I'm sorry, its the biggest reason why I always ban Arabia when playing TG's with friends. The amount of games that just end when the first attack comes in is disgustingly high (even if its just a flank hitting a flank with archers or scouts and no 2v1 shenanigans) - climbing in 1v1's was extremely similar through this bracket. I bet if all players around this elo just played 5 games where they went balls out feudal, assuming a clean opening and dark age they'd win 4 games before the 17 min mark.
Its so...fascinating that in a game with a playercount like aoe2 people still try to invent the wheel new. Why are these low elo guys not just try to learn a proper buildorder and work in variations as they get better😅
This video proves the 'all in build order problem' you were tackling in the other video. This guy follows a build order but his economy collapses without pressure... Because he doesn't actually understand the basics of the game. He's just been given the tools to get cheap easy wins via build orders. It destroys the game at lower elos. The build order content factory meta hurts aoe long term because mostly people with build orders triumph, not those with better fundamentals. Content idea. Perhaps use Hoang as a case study for this. The build kills players far better than him, but in settings where he's forced to demonstrate a skillset with variety he barely gets past the first qualifier.
