- The Abandoned Railway Tunnel of Ashby
Ashby-de-la-Zouch once had quite a lot of railways in the area. Two or 3 tunnels also lay in the vicinity with the longest one being Ashby Tunnel. With one end filled and buried and the other bricked off but near a footpath, Ashby Tunnel lays lost and forgotten amongst nature.
Join me as we take a look inside Ashby Tunnel. Filmed back in 2020, this footage was rescued from a lost memory card so its nice to let it see the light of day.

Imagining that you got back to the first portal and the hole had been spookily filled in whilst you were in there...
5:29 do you think maybe there was a hook for any of the men taking refuge to perhaps hang a lantern?
Regardless of quality improvements, it was still a very enjoyable tour of a tunnel. Thank you.
A classic Ant video 👍. Your holding out on us there's nothing wrong with the quality of this video!
Another superb tunnel. I get so cross, though - why do these marvellous feats of engineering get filled in and walled up? All these tunnels should be preserved and made into footpaths/cycleways - or even restored railway lines!! Many thanks, Ant.
Its a great video. Love the floor shot ...looks like a never ending zebra crossing 😍. Cheers Ant

Its a nice little tunnel, ive been there a couple of times. It used to be much smaller bore when it carried the Ticknall Tramway all the way to the canal in Ashby. When it was taken over by the standard gauge line & rebored, the tramway terminated at a loading dock not far from the remaining portal.
I hope one day it will reopen as a cycle path & extension of the existing path along the tramway from Ticknall.
Ant, the UK has so many tunnels, culverts, long abandoned sewers, long forgotten basements "maybe under a carpark," or even some Roman Ruins here and there. You may be standing on top of one right now and don't even know it. What a great place to live...
Hi Ant, a Golden Oldie which you have saved for the history records. Thank you.
Thanks very much Phillip
The South cutting and portal was filled in the late 70's it was part of our cross country run at high school, I can remember it was used as a dumping ground
Great video Ant. Glad you were able to save it. The saddest sight had to be the infill mud creeping through at the other portal. Makes it so final that the end has gone 😔
This Ashby Rail tunnel is in rather good shape. Spooky…..agreed. Thanks for the video, Ant! Always enjoy them. See you on the next! ❤😊🇬🇧👍🇺🇸
SMASHING. THANK YOU
Thank you
I tell you what, you're bloody brave going in there at night -
Very atmospheric indeed, the age of the tunnel is reflected in its look, it just appears incredibly old. Doing it at dusk added to the intrigue, nice one.
i remember going up there askids in about 1967 the bin lorries were tipping in the cutting to fill it in.
Defo a spooky one Ant. Thanks for uploading this older footage. 👍🏻
Wow, great that you were able to save this footage, very beautiful and spooky, indeed 👌🏼😀
So glad you managed to recover this, great tour.
Glad you enjoyed it Mike thank you. There's a couple others on the same SD card too
Thanks Ant. Glad you recovered this. Wonderful. Cheers cobber!
Got a few more on that same SD card too 😉
@@TrekkingExploration You bloody beauty!!!
Don’t do yourself down. Filming quality amazing. Clowne & creswell my neck of the woods. Looking forward to your take on our area
Love the spooky music Ant, reminds me of the Dave Allen / Billy Connolly sketches, 'don't look behind you' when you live alone, switch off the tv and go to bed!
Another great tunnel explore. Very dark and music apt. Amazing bricks. How they stand the test of time. Thanks Ant. Brilliant.
Fantastic tunnel. What gorgeous colours they are. Love going thru them. Thanks for taking me along. Please take care
Didn't notice alledged poor quality as I was too busy watching😂😂😂 She's in great shape for an oldun, interesting rounded point portal. Any more lost vids on that card????
Very atmospheric. I really love the colours around the second recess you showed. Thank you.
Thanks Ant, I really like the R/R tunnels, I just like the tall point of the tunnel, I didn't see any air shafts ? I guess that is why it is pointed. Thanks again
The infilled cutting was used by the local council as a land-fill tip after the tunnel closed, looking at the hole in the wall on the in-filled end it looks like an old bike frame poking through? Somewhere I've got an external photo of it just as the infill was approaching the top of the portal.
Brilliant again
Even if it is lost footage Ant, still enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.
Scarey music and stepping through that hole my stomach flip..
Thoroughly enjoyed it (as usual). I think you have done spookier ones e.g. Mapperley, but this one I shall have to visit! Thanks again, Ant.
Awsome
Cheers Pete
Really enjoyed this buddy! We’ve got some great ones in south wales
The tunnel was most probably not furst built as a railway tunnel, but as a tramway tunnel as there was no such thing as a railway then. The tunnel was opened in the same year that the first locomotive was designed and built.
Nice trip, hank you
I've just been looking at Rail Map Online and wonder if you've done any walks around Kettering and/or Corby? It's just that there are dozens of old iron works tracks there & wondered if you've explored it. 😀
Liking the NCB Watnall bricks you found. Ive several of those from the site of the old colliery and brickworks, next to the M1. Surprised they didnt use more local ones from the Whitwick colliery and brickworks. 🤔
I've often wondered if you always start your videos with "everyone" intentionally or "hello everyone" with the hello being cut off in edit ny mistake. Its bugging me! 😂
Aside from that minor curiosity your vids are excellent viewing and as always, informative and atmospheric. Keep them coming 👍
I lived in Ashby for over 30 years and never visited. 😮
great vid anyway ant bit creepy though i was expecting boris karloff or christopher lee to put an appearance in lol
Ha ha ha ha I'll see what I can do next time I'm near Whitby Abbey 😂
Rather you than me. I can almost smell it!
Definitely not one I'll return to
3:28 Full of Ghosts….
No tracks here. This was a Culvert.
If you were doing this explore today would you use your drone to take a peek through the hole at the other end of the tunnel? 🇨🇦
Hiya - may be you filmed at night time b/c it is dark inside Tunnels any way - so what does it matter what time you made the film!!! 🤔🚂🚂🚂
@2:50 What was that ??? Looks like the old "Copper" that was in the cellar for boiling the whites on wash day !!
my neck of the woods Ant
Not that far from mine either 😊
First??? I'm on holiday today. Fourth of July weekend......
No taxation without representation......... lol
Hope you are having a great time off
@@TrekkingExploration Yes, as I'm starting the day with one of your videos.
Cleaning up the backyard, right after this watch, before the BBQ tomorrow.
Bit to much focus on brick walls and the ground . Not one of your best videos.
I do say at the beginning this was 3 years ago
