Hey!! Thanks for the video. I found it on the Wrangler forum after searching there for why BOTH sides of my front floors in my 2017 Jeep Wrangler were soaked. Gonna try the Nappa tape you suggested.
Dude, thanks so much for this video! I was going crazy trying to find and fix the pooling of water I was getting on the floor mats on both front doors. Kept thinking it was the Rugged Ridge entry guards. Saw your vid, bought some camper tape, and it's fixed! No more leaks. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@raymcelroy7279 I don't since I don't have my JK anymore (traded up to a JL) but it's on the area right by the mirror on the door frame side. A strip maybe about 5 or 6 inches.
Bro, I was skeptical. You saved me a shit ton. I went to Napa this morning and it's been raining for days. It stopped raining for an hour or so and I installed it. You were right! Good stuff!
thanks for this. Jeep dealer quoted me $700 cad to fix my leak. I followed your instructions and then went thru the carwash to double check it worked. It worked perfect. Cheers dude
Really great video, thank you for posting. It had been driving me crazy that a $40k Jeep leaves a puddle on my floor mat every time it rains. People told me, “Hey, it’s A Jeep, that comes with the territory”. ... Bah!
Don 't listen to them, they don't know what they're talking about. The gaskets and seals on the body and door are designed and intended to prevent migration of water into the interior in inclement weather conditions. I am dealing with a water migration problem in my Jeep and will replace the gasket across the top lip of the windshield and the upper corners on the body top junction.
This worked perfect on my 2015 JKU. I went straight to NAPA after watching this - they had one roll left. I didn’t even install it as precise as you did, it’s raining now with no leaks. Brilliant. I think as long as the new foam goes over the top part of that seal it fixes the leak. Thank you sir!!
This little patch fixed my leak! Time will tell but after rain today, not a drop. Thanks for taking the time to put this video together and posting it.
SO HELPFUL. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, RB. Heavy rain means I had to rip up my Jeep's saturated carpet in the passenger side front door, open up the drain holes to let it expel the amount of water, and off to get some camper tape. Thank you again.
I just bought my wife a 2017 Jeep Wrangler 2 door I have noticed the floor mats are soaking wet after the third time of realizing this I found your video. I'm going to the parts store tomorrow besides the dealership will just give you the run-around anyway thanks for the great video!!
This is by far the best video I've watched on Jeep leaks. It was well researched and actually explained cause-and-effect very well. I have a 2014 Jeep Wrangler and about 4 months ago she started leaking. Water comes in on the driver side and the passenger side and Strikes just behind the handle to open the door. I went to a Jeep dealership and basically there water experts recommendation was to replace every seal possible for $600! I couldn't walk away fast enough. I have since bought campers tape at Napa and have experimented and have still not corrected my problem. I'm going to watch your video a couple more times and see if I can find the right spot to put that piece of campers tape. The issue is sometimes you can have a leak and the cause could be three different areas and you have to find out which one it is. Again excellent job. Thanks for this post.
Thanks for watching James! Keep experimenting with the weatherstripping in different places, it took me quite a while to locate my problem but when I found it, what a great feeling. You will get it. The tape is good for process of elimination.
Huge OMG - so simple. The dealer replaced both door gaskets all the way around (now my doors are hard to close) plus the seal along the top windshield and it did nothing! Thanks!!!
I have tried the fix where you run weather stripping down the frame and around the Button seal and it worked for about 3 weeks but the weather stripping flattened out causing the water to run over it and the leak started again. Thanks for posting this. I will give this method a try. Seems a lot easier than trying to line up 6 feet of weather stripping without it tangling and sticking to itself.
You are so on point here! I had the same problem last week; which, i traced back to that gasket. I ended up applying silicone underneath it and leak solved.
So I tried a couple of unsuccessful fixes until I saw this clip, problem fixed (third example in this clip). Thanks Rick! Dry interior now and a ton of that camper tape for future repairs. :)
Awesome going to buy some of that tape today for the door to windshield spot. I bought mine used and I keep coming outside with puddles in my Jeep. I just replaced the door seal myself and thought that would take care of it and it didnt. Thanks for the video!
Welcome! Good luck with the fix. Even if the spot I suggested doesn't fix it for you, keep trying with the tape in some different locations, to help narrow down where the water might be coming from.

My dealership is amazed, I shared with them what I did and why, they are never even trained to look at something like that. I am so grateful for your help. Now this 4 month nightmare can end.
Excellent! Very glad to hear it worked for you. Keep in mind that after several months the weatherstripping tape can shift, and you may need to re-apply it, but aside from that regular maintenance, things should stay dry. Have a good time with your new Jeep!
@@Ricks4WD It worked like magic. Thank you once again for your video. While I am still waiting for the NAPA tape to arrive, I used some electrical tape and a small piece of foam to achieve the same effect. Works!

Thanks! I just tried this fix last week and we had some serious rain today. While I saw no water on the floor I also just installed an Armorlite flooring....so either it worked and I thank you tremendously or the water is under the Armorlite flooring and I won't know until the floor rusts out. Either way, thanks!
Just got an 07 and it leaks 😪 comes in from the bottom of the door and noticed that maybe the previous owner didnt put the hard top back on correctly. Gonna try these tricks, thanks!!
Hey Rick a million thanks for a simple cheap fix to a very frusterating problem. Suggestions, at critical points in the video where you showed the button fastener, it went dark, especially where you were showing the placement of the gasket material. Also please describe the specifics of the gasket material. I had stuff on hand that was a bit too thick and narrow go implement the fix. Otherwise, fantastic and thanks again.
Hi Mark, thank you for your comments! The gasket material I used was Napa Camper Shell Tape Weatherstrip, Napa P/N 770-1763. I made this video about 4 years ago when I barely knew what I was doing on RUclips, hopefully my equipment and video skills have improved since then! Have a good one!
Nothing to loose my last JKU was Lemon law for this issue and they gave me back full retail value bet you never heard that before. I didn`t even have to pay wear and tear and I had 17K miles on it. Now my new JKU is doing the same thing been in the shop 4 times I have a different dealership looking at it this week.
I have the same issue at the door and I am getting water in on the floor of the driver side. I’m hoping to look in the spot you suggest. Hope it works! In the winter it freezes and becomes a hard solid frozen surface. Drives me nuts!
Be sure all your rubbers are clean and debris fee. Crud builds up under the ragtop frame and makes for a less than smooth seal. Treat with UV rubber replenisher or conditioner and leave unlatched for an hour or so to remove any memory from compressing against the crud layer. Use soapy bleach water to clean all gaskets for factory fresh seal
Thank you for this video Sir : ) Do you think this material, and process could be used to remedy the same type of leak/leak location on the passenger side? Many thanks : thumbs up :
Hi Rick.... do you have any tips or tricks for stopping the water run off on the soft top when the door is open...that one little spot right in front. Sorry I dont have a photo.. it was raining lol
Unfortunately I don't. I have the same problem, I think it would need a true raingutter channel running the length of the top and into the windshield. If you find something let us know!
hey Rick... so remember I told you I was still having leaks.. well one other guy posted the same leak and how he fixed it.. very similar to yours but he ran the strip a longer distance. well I tried that. Perfection, it has rained twice in 3 days under cooler temps and I have been bone dry. Sooooooo happpy. I thank you both!!!
You say keep trying until you're successful - how easy is it to take off the weatherstripping adhesive once you stick it on? Any adverse effects from removing and reapplying tape like that? Thanks for the video.
No issues to remove it at any time. This NAPA tape I used is fairly easy to remove if necessary, and won't leave much residue behind. Doesn't affect the paint or existing seals or anything--no adverse effects. If there is any bit of adhesive residue left behind a wet towel or some Goo Gone will remove it quickly.
People are putting complaints on the NHTSA website. That moisture has caused drivers to have electrical issues and with the takata airbag it adds to the dangers of it.
Feel for drafts in lower front door while driving it turned out to be my problem with those plastic door entrance protectors it would push rain through the gasket while driving and get collect under the floor mat
rained the whole day in NY today.....and no more damp drivers carpet....tried 5 or 6 things on youtube that did not work....covering the button with the tape works
Fantastic video - I learned a lot. Now, any ideas about a leak down the A pilar? Water comes from underneath the plastic cover at the windshield, then down to the plastic A pilar cover. Then to the dash, and carpet. This Jeep is brand new - noticed the problem 2 days after purchase. I tried to isolate the leak, by taping the roof / windshield frame joint and gently hosing the roof and door. Pulled the tape back from the door, hosed (gently) the top and recreated the A pilar leak. Already have an appointment with the dealer, but wanted to at least give them a limited area to concentrate on - or better yet, fix it myself. All help much appreciated.
Hard top or soft top? I only have a soft top--when new I had the windshield header gasket leaking (sort of in the way you describe), and they replaced the windshield header gasket under warranty. If it is a soft top, it could also be coming from the joint between the windshield and the plastic door surround--I've had to use this tape in the same area as well--although it sounds like you have already tried to diagnose in this same area. If it is a hardtop, sorry I will be useless to help! Good luck!
If you mean the windshield, I have never lowered the windshield on the JK so it hasn't been a issue. It is an extensive process on the JK. However, all you would need to do is reapply the weatherstripping in the same spot. The other windows in a JK don't have an effect on this fix.
Can you show a photo of the weather strip applied? It’s a very contoured location so want to make sure I’m covering the correct part. Thanks in advance
my new JL does this , just like my jk did - you would have thought it would have been fixed by now, but nope - i have water on the driver side floor mat, but its not traveling the way yours does - its almost like its from behind the kick panel/ knee panel under the steering wheel - maybe the new design of the JL it just runs another way hahaha - i have to check out the gasket later and see what the deal is .. i will update if this fix works with the JL - thanks for the heads up i could never find it with my jk
@@Ricks4WD i def will - i just remembered this video and thought i would come post about my jl - i had to re order some tape so i will keep yall posted or my findings ..
The F15 and F18 aircraft use a FIP seal (form in place) seal on the avionics bay doors to seal out the water. The soft rubber gasket is put on the door frame perimeter and then the door is closed shut and locked down. The gasket then conforms to the contour of the surfaces require sealing. The seal is then tested under water pressure for the integrity of the sealing.
Just bought my first JK..... haven't rained and didn't wash it yet but after seeing so many people complaining about, no doubt design flaws and quality control I'm beginning to think perhaps I made a mistake.... Good thing I'm in CA and it hardly ever rains here.
Not sure. Perhaps, although I've found the foam weatherstripping is easier to apply and it conforms to the door seal really well. It's also easy to replace if need be.
What is that front gasket with the rivet thru it called. Mine has space behind it and I can't get it flush with the car and am trying to replace it. I have filled it with silicon but it still gets by.
Rhino is great stuff and a good replacement for the carpet! I have also used Monstaliner with good results, and have seen people spray in Raptor Liner as well--that looks and performs really great.
I just bought a brand new 2021 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon EcoDiesel hardtop. It has only 580 kms (350 miles) on it. Yesterday, there was over an inch of water in the driver's winter floor mat. Also, the passenger and rear mats are soaked as well! I thought that I might have left the driver's door ajar, but that doesn't account for the passenger side. Also, there is a hump under the front seats, so I am curious how the water got into the rear carpet. I am booked into the dealership on Wednesday to get it leak checked, but after seeing all the leak problems, I am skeptical that they will fix the problem. After paying $91,000.00 Canadian for it, I am pretty choked! I have never had the hardtops off since I bought it. I can't believe that Jeep would not have fixed this issue years ago. Perhaps it is time for a class action lawsuit?
That's the first I have heard of the JL/JT leaking like that. That's unfortunate. It almost sounds like the hardtop wasn't properly installed or sealed from the factory.
I do have water coming in on the driver side floor right where yours was, but this didnt seem to fix it? I can see it coming down the inside there just as you described, was hoping this would solve my issue
You may have to play with the position of the weatherstripping. It's possible that it's not leaking from the same place as mine, and you may need to experiment with the tape.
It took me quite a while of experimenting to find my leak. Don't be afraid to put way more weatherstripping all over the place on the door frame. You can always remove the stuff that didn't work. Also, check the seal on the door itself, to make sure it hasn't fallen out of position.
@@miloo318 yes, my leak was on the front top of my jeep where the front seal and freedom top meet, the padding was warped so I put campers tape and it fixed my issues! I tried about everything Possible.
Maybe, but it might be that the door isn't sealing properly against the top. If you have a soft top, open the top and make sure the seals near to door are in good condition. You can test and diagnose it with the foam tape in different positions. If you have a hardtop, the removable panel might not be sealing correctly. Try removing and replacing it, paying attention to the condition of the seals as you replace it. Good luck!
With the soft top, also check that the seals aren't folded back on themselves when you pop the top and open the door. Don't be fearful of adding a bunch of foam tape on top of the plastic door frame where the soft top sits... That can be a place where water can come in as well.
Rick Bernotas OK, will do that today between rain drops. My Jeep is currently flooded on the drivers side, quite damp on the passenger side. This has been a great help. Thank you so much.
Rick I have this very same problem on my 2015 JKU. I am curious about a couple things. The button on the gasket, Is it removeable without damaging it so I can remove the old foam stripping behind the gasket? Do the Jeeps come from the factory with this foam behind the gasket? I believe you mentioned you have replaced the weather stripping on other parts of the jeep top, where did you get it and how's it holding up VS dealership original?
Not sure if it is removable without damaging it. You don't need to remove it to fix this. I'm just using Napa Camper Shell tape weatherstrip (linked in description) and you only need to apply a small piece of it over the button and gasket. It holds up, but I usually need to reapply it about once a year. ,👍😎
@@Ricks4WD Thanks for the fast response. I have the stripping and I tried to zoom in to your gasket location to see if you had old foam which I didnt see so I was thinking maybe I should get rid of the old foam. Thanks Again!
I don't have anything closer up, but just align it with the top of that windshield seal in the door frame, and run it all the way down the seal. The important part is to cover up that circular fastener in the seal with the weatherstrip tape, so the door seal can seal smoothly over it.
Same mine has leaked almost since day one, they replaced all the seals but those door ones, and nothing stops the leak, mine has foam in that area which just blows my mind, it get saturated with water and can't hold anymore and it just flows down the tub to my floor! who uses a sponge to STOP water! Crazy!
Just some will, not all. But more than you would think. I've had 3 (2 TJ's and a JKU) and each one of them leaked water in its own way, from either the windshield or the doors.
I have a brand new Wrangler (2018) and it leaks around drivers door and between front overhead panels. Poor fit and finish. Quality control issue. All these fixes should not be necessary. Chrysler should fix his problem free of charge.

Just got an 07 and it leaks 😪 comes in from the bottom of the door and noticed that maybe the previous owner didnt put the hard top back on correctly. Gonna try these tricks, thanks!!
I have the last one let’s hope this method works!
This fix worked on my passenger door. I used butyl rubber tape since it is pliable and molds to the door gasket
Thank you so much!! This video was a lot of help.
Glad it helped! Thanks for stopping by.
Extremely helpful. Thank you
You're welcome! Glad it helped.
My JKU has this leak. Gonna get this material and give it a go!
What a great video thx a lot sr
hi great job i will try on mine thanks
I have the same issue at the door and I am getting water in on the floor of the driver side. I’m hoping to look in the spot you suggest. Hope it works! In the winter it freezes and becomes a hard solid frozen surface. Drives me nuts!
It's definitely worth a try. Good luck with the fix!
This trick worked like a charm...thanks
You are welcome, glad to hear that it worked!
That's good to hear I'm going to the part store today to get some camper shell tape LOL my dealership is awful I don't like dealing with them!!
Yes, definitely, I have done the exact same on the passenger side of my Jeep as well! Good luck!
Thank you, appreciate it !
Thank you from Australia
You're welcome!
Hi Rick.... do you have any tips or tricks for stopping the water run off on the soft top when the door is open...that one little spot right in front. Sorry I dont have a photo.. it was raining lol
Unfortunately I don't. I have the same problem, I think it would need a true raingutter channel running the length of the top and into the windshield. If you find something let us know!
Will do.. gonna be looking. I hate getting wet before I get out of my vehicle.
hey Rick... so remember I told you I was still having leaks.. well one other guy posted the same leak and how he fixed it.. very similar to yours but he ran the strip a longer distance. well I tried that. Perfection, it has rained twice in 3 days under cooler temps and I have been bone dry. Sooooooo happpy. I thank you both!!!
That's great! I'm so glad you finally found a solution that works. Jeep on!
do you have a link to the other video by chance? Tried this method to do and it doesn't leak nearly as bad, but still does unfortunately. thanks
Hi do you have a up close pic of how the tape should be thank you going to try 2moro
Thank you! It's refreshing to see someone still replying to a video made a couple years ago.
You are welcome, hope you are able to get it to work!
Going to try this out. Thanks!
Good luck with the fix! 👍
People are putting complaints on the NHTSA website. That moisture has caused drivers to have electrical issues and with the takata airbag it adds to the dangers of it.
This is true... I just got the Takata passenger airbag inflator recall as well. Good point.
I have this issue in my 1995 and my dad has it also in a 2015. The dealership is trying to fix his for free
You found my problem - Thx!
Thankyou! Mine gets a puddle in the floor board on my mats! I hope this fixes it
You're welcome!
John did this work?
Feel for drafts in lower front door while driving it turned out to be my problem with those plastic door entrance protectors it would push rain through the gasket while driving and get collect under the floor mat
rained the whole day in NY today.....and no more damp drivers carpet....tried 5 or 6 things on youtube that did not work....covering the button with the tape works
Fantastic!
Same shit! I gotta try that. It was good for a while after they fixed it.
Good luck!
what’s the name of the product where can I get it?
It's "Napa Camper Shell Tape Weatherstrip" Napa P/N 770-1763. Link here: www.napaonline.com/en/p/BK_7701763
Chrysler needs to fix this .It's terribly flawed in design. I've had mine fixed 3 times and it's leaking again.
eightees guy Chrysler doesn’t make jeeps ! Company called Mahindra has made jeeps since 1947
@@MrChrisgilbert44 what planet do you live on?
Have same issue but they being said, can you tell us what happens to this repair once you want put window down.?
If you mean the windshield, I have never lowered the windshield on the JK so it hasn't been a issue. It is an extensive process on the JK. However, all you would need to do is reapply the weatherstripping in the same spot. The other windows in a JK don't have an effect on this fix.
I started having this problem after dropping the wind shield I'm glad it's not just me
You're definitely not alone!
Can you show a photo of the weather strip applied? It’s a very contoured location so want to make sure I’m covering the correct part. Thanks in advance
If you're in doubt, just cover as much of it as you can. The important part is that it covers that 'button' part of the seal.
👍🏼
my new JL does this , just like my jk did - you would have thought it would have been fixed by now, but nope - i have water on the driver side floor mat, but its not traveling the way yours does - its almost like its from behind the kick panel/ knee panel under the steering wheel - maybe the new design of the JL it just runs another way hahaha - i have to check out the gasket later and see what the deal is .. i will update if this fix works with the JL - thanks for the heads up i could never find it with my jk
Wow first I've heard of a JL leaking... that's too bad although it seems like Jeep can never get it right. Keep us posted!
@@Ricks4WD i def will - i just remembered this video and thought i would come post about my jl - i had to re order some tape so i will keep yall posted or my findings ..
@@Ricks4WD well my leak is gone it was from the seam under the cowl/corners sealed them all up and no more leaks - it rained very heavy and not a drop
@@Ricks4WD oh and i also taped the mucket seal up in the door so im sure it was a combonation of them both - but i think more or less it was the seam
@@stevep6108 awesome, glad to hear it! 👍
Awesome thanks
Thanks for your help.
You bet!
😀👍
The F15 and F18 aircraft use a FIP seal (form in place) seal on the avionics bay doors to seal out the water. The soft rubber gasket is put on the door frame perimeter and then the door is closed shut and locked down. The gasket then conforms to the contour of the surfaces require sealing. The seal is then tested under water pressure for the integrity of the sealing.
Where do you buy this tape?
Just bought my first JK..... haven't rained and didn't wash it yet but after seeing so many people complaining about, no doubt design flaws and quality control I'm beginning to think perhaps I made a mistake.... Good thing I'm in CA and it hardly ever rains here.
Would a good of silicone sealant work?
My 2012 Wrangler sport leaks at that rubber boot at the top of the drivers foor.. the one you said folds over..
By the way, it got so bad that I have ripped up all my carpet and I will be Rhino coating the pan
Rhino is great stuff and a good replacement for the carpet! I have also used Monstaliner with good results, and have seen people spray in Raptor Liner as well--that looks and performs really great.
Yeah, I did that to my old TJ. No regrets. It was great at the carwash too -- step 1) spray outside. step 2) spray inside. drive until dry.
@@Ricks4WD Thanks! ill keep maneuvering it, i can see the water coming down the side there, and then it does pool just as you described on the floor
It took me quite a while of experimenting to find my leak. Don't be afraid to put way more weatherstripping all over the place on the door frame. You can always remove the stuff that didn't work. Also, check the seal on the door itself, to make sure it hasn't fallen out of position.
@@Nbohon21 Did you get it fixed?
@@miloo318 yes, my leak was on the front top of my jeep where the front seal and freedom top meet, the padding was warped so I put campers tape and it fixed my issues! I tried about everything Possible.
Is there a possibility of the rubber seal around the door frame failing? I feel/see water dripping down from the top of my door jam.
Good luck!
Rick Bernotas I have a soft top. And yes, I will definitely try the tape and these suggestions. Thank you!
I probably cleaned some junk out of there originally, but I definitely never removed the gasket.
Do you have a closer up on where you put the foam?
I don't have anything closer up, but just align it with the top of that windshield seal in the door frame, and run it all the way down the seal. The important part is to cover up that circular fastener in the seal with the weatherstrip tape, so the door seal can seal smoothly over it.
Rick Bernotas Thanks for the quick reply and help.
Thanks man for the tip
Jeep .....never loved and hated something so much at the same time. 🥰🥰🥰🤯🤯🤯🤯😡😡😡😡
Thanks a lot!
Are the leaks still happening with the 2020 model?
Good question. I don't believe so.
Mine is leaking with 1700 miles definitely taking it to the dealership and have never even taken the top off
Same mine has leaked almost since day one, they replaced all the seals but those door ones, and nothing stops the leak, mine has foam in that area which just blows my mind, it get saturated with water and can't hold anymore and it just flows down the tub to my floor! who uses a sponge to STOP water! Crazy!
So all wranglers will leak?
Just some will, not all. But more than you would think. I've had 3 (2 TJ's and a JKU) and each one of them leaked water in its own way, from either the windshield or the doors.
Felix M mine is leaking from both doors driver side and passenger side it rained for 2 days straight now my whole Jeep is like a rain forest
I have a brand new Wrangler (2018) and it leaks around drivers door and between front overhead panels. Poor fit and finish. Quality control issue. All these fixes should not be necessary. Chrysler should fix his problem free of charge.
I haven't met a jeep that hasn't leaked
Going to go grab a roll now. This leak has been so annoying
What do you think about a leak coming in middle of the door?
And also at the frame directly beside passenger seat?
Hmm, think I'd have to see a video of it. Check the door seals and also the seals where your top mates with the door surrounds.
There is a guy on youtube that addresses this leak location.
