DETROIT TIGER STADIUM SOUNDS of the Game April 18, 1970

  • Downloaded for my Facebook group, Return to Old Delray, Old Detroit members. As FB won't let me post there (for now) I will enter through the back door so to speak. I snuck in a little cassette recorder to record the sounds of the game and took the tape with me to Vietnam to remember my hometown. The familiar voice of P.A. announcer Joe Gentile introduces the players. Myself and two buddies from River Rouge were with me, all three of us went to war; WWI; WWII and me soon to be in Nam. No play by play, just the sounds of the ballpark, Tiger Stadium.

      Yes, it was unfortunate. You did miss something special but this video did a pretty good job of bringing out a little taste of what it was like. After the team left Tiger Stadium the thrill was gone and it never came back.

    Ah Tiger Stadium in 1970, there is a chance I was at this game, I saw many in the 70's. I remember the smell of cigars, hot dogs, shouts from the vendors - "Ice Coooold Beer", "Pepsi here" - it had its charms. Saw many things - different races, medical alerts, Black mobs asking for quarters - I really did grow up there at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull.

      At games on hot July nights I remember watching all the cigarette smoke floating in the air around the upper deck level and all of the fist fights in the bleachers. Both were especially noticeable during twi-night doubleheaders back when you got twice as much for your money. Sure do miss those days.

    Went to Tigers game last night - great seats five rows behind home plate. Struck by how obnoxious it is now - sensory overload - flashy visuals, a thousand music cuts, begging fans to be loud but the fans can't be heard over all that noise anyway. I miss those green wood seat Tiger Stadium days when the sounds, sights and smells of the game were what was in front of you - not forced down your throat.

    Led by Dick McAuliffe's 1st inning 2 run homer( his first), the Tigers beat the BoSox 5-1. Mickey Lolich (3-1)scattered 10 hits and struck out 7, for the complete game victory. Bill Lee(0-1) lasted just 1 2/3 innings, and took the loss. Mickey Stanly went 3 for 4, and Al Kaline 2 for 5, with 2 RBIs. Att: 19,461.

    I remember those old plastic horns that you blew into real well. We lived close to Cincinnati and went to a Reds game the day they gave away those horns. My brother and I got both got them. Well you know those things weren’t exactly quiet and the next day my brother and I were out blowing them in our yard. We also found out that if you blew them into a sewer manhole cover that the echo made them even longer. After about 10 minutes one of the neighbors across the street came out yelling and calling us m-fers. Our Dad heard all and told this bitch that he wasn’t going to do a thing to my brother and I. Neighbor went back into the house and we couldn’t blow the horns anymore. But the next day we were out tooting the horns. We eventually lost interested. That was back when the Reds were back to back World Series Champions, 1975-76. However, I was a Tigers fan from the first time I could remember. My nickname was also “Tiger” and I also have a picture of me on Woodward Ave in Detroit across the street a week before they started tearing down Tiger Stadium. That was the day I stopped liking the Tigers and haven’t liked them since. Thanks for allowing me to share these memories.

      @@PresidentGas1 McClain was suspended most of the season by Bowie Kuhn for mob ties. His arm was shot true but his behavior is what sidelined him most. Throwing 300 plus innings each year in 68 and 69 took its toll. Denny wasn’t exactly a health nut for conditioning either unless you consider drinking a case of Pepsi a day conditioning!

    • @jimcoleman598
      @jimcoleman598 Год назад

      They had the one bad year there (79-83 - hardly shitty), as McLain was suspended for 1/2 the season. But 71-73 were good years (72 East champs) with alot of the same players from 68. After 1970 the Senator trade for Brinkman, Rodriguez, and Joe Coleman was a steal for the Tigers.
