the MSK 1 would be the knife I designed; it is perfect. but having broken my back extricating a critical patient (NYC EMS) there is no possibility of affording one in my lifetime. :-( . So I'd like to thank you for including knives like schrade (gonna get the 51)and not shaming peo into believing that if they don't spend over $300 for a knife, they are not serious (re prepping etc) or safe. I really love your channel. you have one of the best attitudes on RUclips. I'm so tired of 'prepper primadonnas'. thank you again. Be Blessed.

I went with a HABILIS Bushtool, for me, the cost and quality was a good fit. I also keep a small detail knife with the kit, as well as other items that make the whole package a great choice for me. great video to help folks decide. all of the knifes are a great choice, alot of things come down to personal choice and im glad you mention that, as no choice is wrong or write. keep the videos coming. thanks.

  • @viewsandreviews180

Good video. Your recommendations are very similar to the ones I have; full tang, blade length from 10 cm up to 15 cm, blade thickness from 0.3 cm up to 0.6 cm and a grippy handle. I’ve been pleased with my Schrade SCHF36 (like the SCHF 9 you mentioned in the video) for years. I only wish two things had been different, it was on the high end for thickness at 0.250 inches thickness and I’m not a fan of hollow grind blades (Scandinavian grind is easier to maintain in the field). I’ve modified the knife in both areas and feel it is nearly perfect for my uses. The fact that it came with a sharpening hone, a fire steel and a sheath to hold them all sealed the deal for me then and would now.

You have all valid points here. But I see things differently. In my mind carry a good folder (example Spyderco Military S90v) in your pocket, carry a Gransfors Bruks mini belt hatchet, and finally a Silky Bigboy 2000 folding saw. I watched Nutnfancy break a 1/4 inch thick spine Cold Steel Trailmaster batoning a log for fire in the winter time. To me its stupid to beat on one of your most needed tools, (and risk breaking it) in a desperate situation. Murphys law states whatever can go wrong will go wrong. Yes my suggestion costs a bit, but your/my/our life is well worth the cost. Use the Military for food prep and maybe dressing game. The mini hatchet for camp chores, small chopping tasks it can easily dress game and fillet fish and any number of tasks. And the Silky with extra large teeth is damn near a small chain saw in cutting power. It will easily cut a 12 inch diameter tree in under 5 minutes of work.

A lot to cover in less than 7 minutes. Good Job !! As You stated, steel discussion is for many more & lengthy vids. One aspect of steels, Heat Treatment. Lesser steels can preform very very well IF Properly Heat Treated !! A great/expensive steel mis Heat Treatment can fail the first time out of the sheath ! You need both, but again, a Good Heat can do wonders for a Blade !!!

In my personal use and experience I have found the best knife (Atleast to me) is the Ka-Bar's Mark 2 USMC and Mark 1 USN. My preference is the Mark 1 with rubberized grip handles. Sheath system is amazing and secure, with a five inch cutting edge it's perfectly sized, full tang construction (I consider stick tang to be full tang), and designed for survival, combat, and utility. This makes it one of the most all around knives I own. 1095 Cro-van makes it really tough and resistant and being a carbon steel it is much easier to sharpen in the field. And it's a good price at only about $55. At least that's the best I've used. Time tested and never changed, there's a reason for that.

ESEE 6 with pouch sheath. heavy enough for hard work, but still able to do fine work. holds a great edge and takes one heck of a beating. matched up with a ferro rod and a fishing kit in the ESEE tin that stays in the pouch. I have also replaced the lanyard on both the knife and ferro rod with 550 fire cord.

Becker bk2. Locktighted the bolts and nuts, then took 1.25 inch bicycle inner tube, and worked it over the handle. It's super super snug, won't come off. It's comfortably grippy, and isn't slick when wet. Easy mod, big pay off, transforms the knive. Btw, chefs hold the blade directly, between thumb and forefinger for optimum control when doing detail work. Just saying.

Very honest points, I like that you don't push your knife on folks, that is very respectful brother and very humble. I have always liked your vids, the blade steel thing has become an issue for me for the first time ever. I am able to sharpen my knives by hand with stones ....well not anymore. Sheeeesh Cold Steels new VG1 SRK is a beast to sharpen, I am going to buy a
Worksharp cause I'm burnt out trying to get a razor edge on mine. I love Gerber's USA 420HC that stuff sharpens so good. I highly recommend the Prodigy, Strongarm and I don't have an LMF2 but I would recommend it also LOL, easy to sharpen and holds a great edge especially once they have a convex grind formed.

I need it to be able to act as a self defense knife yet still be a good survival knife, something I could use for survival if I had to hike across the country. am I the only one who was slightly disappointed in the usability of the bk2? that blade is a .25 inches thick but it's so heavy and unwieldy. it's more of a prybar than a knife in my opinion but other than that it doesn't do well in most other task. I bought one awhile back with high hopes only to find out it's too heavy to hip carry comfortably or use tactically, the sheath is not great, it's too short to be a decent chopper and too thick to be a great cutter/slicer, the handle is more slick than I would like. The only pros I could really say about it is that it most definitely won't break on you haha needles to say I gave mine away but I'm just saying everybody praises it as one of the best bushcraft/survival knives but I just bought a mora garberg and sog seal pup and in my opinion it blows the bk2 out of the water.

The MSK 1 is overpriced at $280 and it is only D2 steel. There are way better survival knives out there for less money

Another great informative video! Thanks. And the MSK looks totally bad ass! Any chance you'll be doing a give away?

How hard was it to not say, as your needs grow, upgrade to the msk- 1? I thought there would be some subliminals to buy an msk but oddly enough, the only urge I had after watching the video, was to watch My Fair Lady while dressed like Dr. Frank N. Further. What the!!... You're a sick man David!
