Excellent video, with proper comparison and relevant points of thought on both these pairs of gloves. However, I'd like to put an interesting allrounder pair of gloves in the spotlight: meet the Hestra Ergo Grip Active Wool Terry! Living in Sweden (where Hestra is a local brand), I have collected a bunch of Hestra gloves, always aiming at some good deals in different online shops here. That means that amongst other types of gloves, I have both the Fält Gloves (yellow) and the Ergo Grip Actives (both yellow/brown and all black versions - I couldn't resist to take both). Then I only later discovered the Ergo Grip Active Wool Terry gloves, which basically are the Ergo Grip gloves with a warming lining on the inside... and I must say that those are very much the middle ground between the two gloves mentioned in this video. Both grippy and warming while offering excellent dexterity, these are my go-to gloves from later autumn to early spring. The Fält Gloves are also having a warm lining, but the dexterity sometimes leaves a lot to desire, due to the bulkiness of the gloves. Okay, these may well be more enduring and you can swap the lining for a new one, but the advantages of the Ergo Grip Active Wool Terry far overcome those USP's imho. So for those in the market for gloves that want a bit of both of the gloves reviewed in this video, I can strongly recommend the Ergo Grip Active Wool Terry's while in autumn/spring the Ergo Grip Actives are a bliss at protecting your hands without being too warm. When handling rougher tools like a proper cleaving axe and saw, while dealing with bigger and chunkier pieces of wood, I recommend the Fält gloves due to these being more forgiving the rougher work while offering more protection.
Got the Fält gloves 2020 spring because of this video. Absolutely the best gloves I've ever had. Very good when you need to re-arrange your long fire or warm your hands after filleting many fish in cold weather. Used them for bicycling in cold weather, used them to move hot pans etc out of the fire, used them in a walk-in freezer to re-arrange stuff. The are a bit stiff for extended work, but better then those thick goatskin workgloves. You can still feel the surface details with them on. I bring these for any outdoor stuff, there's always a fire you need to sort out or just to warm up your hands after dealing with cold water for extended time. Thanks for your video and introducing me to Hestra. I have since bought more of their gloves.
I got the Fält Guide Gloves this Christmas, and took them out yesterday for a 5-summit winter adventure. I am absolutely in love with them. They're breaking in wonderfully and feel absolutely bulletproof. Warm warm warm too. Really like the modularity of being able to swap out a liner for whatever the weather calls for. I have mittens for extreme weather summits, but these Hestras will take me from the parking lot to the treeline and beyond with maximum comfort and confidence. Really happy with them. Thanks, its videos like these that really turned me on to the glove. I am slowly turning Swedish with my head to toe Fjallraven and now Hestra combo, lol.
Couldn't agree more about the liner gloves. Not many people realise to use them. I live in Finnish lapland and do film work as a soundguy and thin wool liners are my savior on really cold days and when handling my gear. They make a huge difference in the time it takes for your fingers to warm back up again. I would also add a pair of warm mittens to this list like hestra heli ski's. Great camera work btw :)
Great video. I was looking at hestra for a few months especially the falt guide. But looked a little bulky so end up going with the army leather wool terry. Its like the falt as its all leather and it takes the same liners as the falt but looks less bulky. I also ordered the hydra waterproof over shell and pair of monoknit merino liners looking forward to them arriving
Great review Ted! I have the white/yellow Guide gloves and I think they are really nice. My only complaint is that I don't feel safe handling an axe or hatchet with them when using the liner. The liner just prevents my fingers from bending enough, so in order to get a strong enough grip, I really stress my fingers. Of course it's easy enough to take the liner out when swinging an axe or hatchet, but it's something worth noting. I actually don't even use the liner but mostly because I use them as work gloves for gathering and processing firewood, and handling things near/on a fire, during canoe trips (don't need for hikes really). Overall great gloves as you said!
Thanks for your comment! Come to think of it I actually rarely use them without the liner, I do get what you mean with the fingers not bending enough, don’t know if you’ve seen my axe video but I have a pretty small axe, and a small handle so I get a good grip anyways. I also have the hestra work gloves, have you tried them? Thanks for your support!
@@TedWeirum Have not tried the Hestra work gloves, saw some less than desirable reviews and liked the styling of the Guide. I will probably pick up the Ergo Grip gloves at some point though, they look almost perfect for everything I do out in the wilderness. Thanks again for the review and have a great weekend Ted!
Got it! Since I got the Fält guide gloves I haven’t used the work gloves, let me know what you think about the ergo grip if you do get them one day! Happy weekend to you too!

Just discovered HESTRA - nice review -would love some more footage of them in use doing things edited in while your talking about them -keep up the good work
Looked into the Hestra fält gloves after I saw them futured in your Fjällräven Abisko trekking tight video. Always thought these were for men only, but the sizing goes till 6. Very informative video as always, very happy with my purchase! 😁
Hey Ted! I am commenting a bit later than I'd like to but let's go with "better late than never"! :) All in all thanks for the review, indeed you don't find a lot of reviews of gear like gloves or hatchet for that matter. Personally I really liked the Ergo Grip Active gloves with possible combination with the liner you show at the end for the chilly days. Adding them to the long list of gear I'll need to buy! As for the video from technical point of view I have some remarks, good ones as well as (I hope) constructive criticism: - production quality and overall "smoothness" of the video has improved - your English fluency has gone up :) this ties to the aforementioned "smoothness" - I really liked the outro song - B-roll footage is very nice on the other hand: - there are many instances of shakiness where I would definitely expect steady camera footage; I'd accept if some real action was going on but since you are basically presenting the gloves without moving, I don't understand why the camera is shaking so much (i.e. around 0:38, 1:44 or 4:50) even while right after some of these there's another angle of the same shot with perfectly steady camera - visibly out of focus shots (i.e. around 5:40 or 6:48) And now on to your newest video! ;) --- Michal
Wow! Thanks a lot for your comment, I really like reading this! So glad you took your time to write it! As you can tell this is a “work in progress” sort of thing! All the good things that you mention, except from my English maybe, is due to my good friend and partner Abbe, he’s a super talented guy! He’s helped me a lot, both teaching and actual filming! In this specific video we tried out multi cam where some shots were handheld and then there was a camera rolling all the time on a tripod, long story short there was a lot of moving parts and little time, we could have done a better job with some of the shots in this video, I agree! There will be many more to come and I’m looking forward to more feedback from you! Keep it coming!
@@TedWeirum No problem Ted. I really like what you're doing and your goal of improving how you do it :) Kudos to Abbe on the video part. I am looking forward to some winter/snowy videos as well when the time comes (although I guess Sweden is where the time for snow comes sooner than down here :-) ). --- Michal
Thank you so much! Well actually down where I live it’s mostly rain and then it’s snows for some days but it usually goes away pretty fast, up north they had snow for a while! :) but i mean who doesn’t love vertical rain, cold, wind and darkness! ;)
Awesome gloves! I almost bought the Fält Guide Gloves, but in the end I couldn´t pull the trigger on them, because of the high price. They cost around 130€ here in Germany. When I tried them on, they were super comfortable and the best fitting gloves I had ever worn though.
I got mine in the US for like $90, had no idea they were normally $150 here. Use CamelCamelCamel.com to watch Amazon prices, you can set up alerts so it'll let you know if they get to a certain point.
Since I’ve been interested in these models for a while, but never dared to take the plunge, I was wondering if you could answer some questions about them. Do you also use the liners as a third layer in the guide gloves for added warmth? Would you say the guide glove could be used for skiing and low activity in say -25C as well? Hope you can help!
Hey Michiel! These are hands down one of the best gloves I’ve ever used! Yes you can use the liners for extra warmth. Be sure to try it out before so you get a good fit with all three layers! I used them for skiing and they worked great, you’d still want to have an extra pair of mittens for occasions when it’s -25 when your skiing gloves get wet. Hope that answers your questions brother!
great veview, love those ergo gloves ....looking at getting a good pair for outdoors work around the garden etc ...not very cold here in Cornwall in the UK.
Love the review, but i would like t add one more glove to this: The Hestra work glove that I use, is a thiner version of your gloves, with only one layer of leather. I love it, and as you I combine it with the Merino wool liner.
Since it’s possible to take off the inner liner I think they are good for the job! I can also use the ergo grip if I want more dexterity. The work gloves are great but if I have these two from the video, in my case, the work gloves become obsolete
Hey! You’ll be really happy with the gloves I’m sure! I can’t remember the name of the sweater, I think it’s övik something, it’s old so they probably don’t carry it anymore!
I have the same pair of gloves, they keep your hand warm but sadly the stitching along the finger seams keep giving on my gloves, the Hestra shop in Helsinki did repair them but that only lasted a year. Back to square one.
Great review as allways, the thinner gloves reminds me of my enduro/sportbike gloves from STR Lindstrands h with knuckle protection). Perfect fit, feels like an extention of your self. Wouldn't surprise me if those would do well as outdoor gloves 😂😂🤠. Liked both of your reviewed pairs, how do You compare yours to the most common yellow leather ones seen in every outdoor video?
Great vid! What kind of gloves do u suggest for handling hot titanium pot straight from the gas stove? Will the back of the hestra melt when it touches a hot titanium pot?
Got a pair of the Falt guide gloves for my birthday, I absolutely love them for everything, but I haven't tried them with scrambling up rocks since I am too afraid to damage them, do you think they would be ok with that useage, or should I stick to my rappel gloves for that?
BTW Ted, how do the Falt gloves breath during aerobic exercise. Do they trap sweat? Can you use them for say, cross country skiing, or would something like the Hestra Army Leather Patrol (which has a textile on the backhand), be more appropriate? Breathability is important to me as I have had an experience of camping out in the snow with Goretex lined ski gloves. The sweat trapped on the inside caused the glove to freeze overnight, making the gloves ice cold and rock solid in the morning. This is an experience I do not want to repeat.
Great question! I’m going north next week, I’ll use them for snowshoeing and I’ll definitely get warm I’ll see how the hold up and let you know! Since you can take out the liner you’re able to dry it out a bit better than other gloves. I’ll talk about it the video we’re doing, really good and important point!
Will these work for Snow blowing? Keeping my hands in a tight grip on the handles seems to inhibit blood circulation. I try to relax them and open and close my fingers often but with all the snow clearing activities, roof raking, shoveling, and snow blowing, my fingers still always get cold.
How warm are they for winter? I was originally thinking of getting the Heli army mitten or fjellvotten for Iceland next week, but these might be more versatile, if they can withstand the Cold? (Also we go skiing in Røros during the winter)
Nice review. I was going to ask about links and there they are. With December coming next month, what about a 12 days of Ted? Ha. Here's to 5000 before the end of the year. Peace
Thanks! It depends on terrain, time and what I’m doing and of course the weather! as a minimal I tend to bring at least one pair, usually the ergo grip!
Hi Ted and Community, Any tips on sizing ? Do you get the same size thin base liner glove as the Falt or Ergo, or size up /down ? I think i am closer to a size 7 at the limit to fit, and am also wondering if i should size up to the 8 ? I'll have to get these online as i cannot find them locally. Thank kindly for your time and thought.
Thanks for your comment! I get the same size all across the board! If you’re a 7 and it barely fits I’d get an 8 to be sure that the liners would fit too! Thanks for your support!
Nice video! May I ask what your hand measurements are and what size your using? I’m having a hard time figuring out what size to go for. I feel the sizibg chart on Hestras homepage is a bit off.
I think your merino liners are little bit to big. Try to use one size smaller should be much warmer and than they wont slip. Just a great video, thx !!
Thanks Julian, they’re probably a bit old too, so they aren’t as tight anymore. Hey, I could really use your help for Fjallraven polar, polar.fjallraven.com/contestant/?id=7220&backpage=1&order=latest 🙏🏼
Hi Ted, great video 👍 do you think a hestra merino liner would fit underneath the ergo grip gloves for extra warmth in winter or are they too tight a fit?
Sooo... @ted question... Looking at the fält gloves... when thinking about the sizes. Are they with or without the liner ? So using them in the summertime ... they might run a little hot using the liner, but might be to big to use without it ? thoughts ? ( get a pair of summer gloves perhaps ) ... ;)
they sizes are with the liner, so yes like you mention, u can use them for summer as well, it could be nice to keep the liner if you are grabbing hot pans and pots or tending to the fire as it will protect you from heat too. but yeah, for the bigger things I would say that the gloves without the liner would work too. smaller things where dexterity and fingertip feeling is necessary you might be better of with the ergo grip gloves perhaps! : )
Hey Ted, This video really sold me on the fält guide gloves, and I've finaly found an excuse to get myself a pair! I'm taking a trip to Lapland in februari and they are sure to come in handy there. But I was curious, got any more tips (for gear or just in general) for this kind of cold weather adventure?
@@TedWeirum We got a bunch of stuff plannend like a trip with a dogsled and a snowscooter, but mostly about some one day treks trough the snow is what I thought you might be able to shine a light on for me.
Sounds like a great trip! You got base layers? Thick socks, wear two pairs of sock, always bring a thermos filled with hot water, knife, axe. 2-3 ways to make a fire. Not gong to be a lot of daylight, headlamp, extra batteries stored close to your body to keep them warm. Most important: common sense, it looks like paradise, it is paradise but things can change very fast up there, use your head and I’m sure you’ll have a really good time! Hope that answers some of your questions!
@@TedWeirum Things like baselayers and socks where the first thing I thought of, but the daylight really hadn't come to mind yet. That, the fire, and the warning for changeable weather are really good things I'm sure will make the experience that much better, safer, and more comfortable. Thanks for the tips and encouragement!
Would the Falt guide gloves keep hands warm in the sub zero temperatures? Looking for a Hestra glove that is versatile. Hate to have multiple gloves for different purposes
Hey, the feel fine, you still get a good grip and they are still good for normal use, on warmer days they’re great for protection when using an axe or a saw. Thanks for watching brother!

You wrote you also use a 9, and have a nice snug fit. Is your hand basically the same size? Did the Ergo stretch out a little over time to make it perfectly matched? Thank you!

I use the guide gloves for that, also the ergo grip works there for me, of course not straight in the fire with the ergo grip! :)
Got a pair of the Falt guide gloves for my birthday, I absolutely love them for everything, but I haven't tried them with scrambling up rocks since I am too afraid to damage them, do you think they would be ok with that useage, or should I stick to my rappel gloves for that?
I’m sure you could give them a try at it to see how they hold up, I wouldn’t use them mainly for that though!
If you're needing to wear such warm gloves, you're not skiing hard enough!
Good point! :)
Hey Ted, love the review. Asked my wife for the Falt Guide Gloves for Xmas 😊
Thanks mate! Hope she’ll deliver! :)
Will these work for Snow blowing? Keeping my hands in a tight grip on the handles seems to inhibit blood circulation. I try to relax them and open and close my fingers often but with all the snow clearing activities, roof raking, shoveling, and snow blowing, my fingers still always get cold.
If you’re talking about the fält guide glove I think they will!
Great review Ted I will check them out. Can you do a boot review?
Thanks man! I have a boot review, it’s one of the first videos I did, Hanwag tatra! :)
Very useful video. Thank you Ted
Thanks for watching brother!
How warm are they for winter?
I was originally thinking of getting the Heli army mitten or fjellvotten for Iceland next week, but these might be more versatile, if they can withstand the Cold? (Also we go skiing in Røros during the winter)
they'll do in winter as well, of course you can use the thinner base layer glove for extra warmth! :)
Your. Idea is really clear and precise, really enjoyed watching it.
Thank you!
very nice gloves, do you have the same size for ergo grip and falt guide ? or one size less for ergo ? thx
Same size if I remember correctly!
Nice review. I was going to ask about links and there they are. With December coming next month, what about a 12 days of Ted? Ha. Here's to 5000 before the end of the year. Peace
Not a bad idea at all! I’ll look into it Jay, don’t be
Surprised if you see me doing this video! Thanks for all your support brother!
Interesting topic! Do you indeed cary three pairs with you when you go out? Or do you try and anticipate on what you will encounter?
Thanks! It depends on terrain, time and what I’m doing and of course the weather! as a minimal I tend to bring at least one pair, usually the ergo grip!
Hi Ted and Community,
Any tips on sizing ?
Do you get the same size thin base liner glove as the Falt or Ergo, or size up /down ?
I think i am closer to a size 7 at the limit to fit, and am also wondering if i should size up to the 8 ?
I'll have to get these online as i cannot find them locally.
Thank kindly for your time and thought.
Thanks for your comment! I get the same size all across the board! If you’re a 7 and it barely fits I’d get an 8 to be sure that the liners would fit too!
Thanks for your support!
Hey Ted, would you say the falt guide glove without the liner is too big?
I wouldn't say too big but it's definitely bigger, it all depends on what how you intend to use it. : )
@@TedWeirum Is the glove waterproof enough to wear in snowy conditions if you're doing heavy logging work and it wont get soaked through?
Nice video! May I ask what your hand measurements are and what size your using? I’m having a hard time figuring out what size to go for. I feel the sizibg chart on Hestras homepage is a bit off.
hey man! Im between 9-10, on the gloves I wear in the video I use 9, the fit me very good!
Sweet . Thanks!
No worries!
I think your merino liners are little bit to big. Try to use one size smaller should be much warmer and than they wont slip. Just a great video, thx !!
Thanks Julian, they’re probably a bit old too, so they aren’t as tight anymore. Hey, I could really use your help for Fjallraven polar,

Hi Ted, great video 👍 do you think a hestra merino liner would fit underneath the ergo grip gloves for extra warmth in winter or are they too tight a fit?
The best is to try them in store with a pair of liners to be certain, I use the fält guide gloves with the liner when it’s colder
How would you compare the Fact Guid vs Hestra Fall Line? Thanks!
Don’t know those gloves so I got no opinion there!
Have you used either pair of gloves for cross country / nordic skiing (flellski)?
Not yet, i will now in March!
Dear Ted, I've bought a pair of Hestra Njord gloves. Do you wash your leather gloves once in a while? How do you look after them! All the Best!
Hey! I rarely wash them, I use cream on them every once in a while that’s all! :)
@@TedWeirum Thank You! Have a great day!
You too!
Hi only a quick question regarding your jumper you are wearing in this video. What brand it is?
It’s fjällräven, övik i think it’s called!
Hey Ted,
This video really sold me on the fält guide gloves, and I've finaly found an excuse to get myself a pair! I'm taking a trip to Lapland in februari and they are sure to come in handy there. But I was curious, got any more tips (for gear or just in general) for this kind of cold weather adventure?
Thanks man! I got a bunch of tips! What kind of trip are you going on?
No worries friend, hard to know what level you’re on!
the falt gloves are also very good on my motorbike....:-)
yeah, I've heard a lot of people using them!
Which ones are best for making snowmen ⛄️
Haha, the fält guide gloves for snowmen, the ergo grip for snowball action!
@@TedWeirum I’m waiting for the falt guide to come through the post any time now. Can’t wait!
You’ll love them, see the update video on the gloves here on the channel too, 5 years of use for me now
@@TedWeirum But seriously would the leather soak through when making snowmen and shoveling snow?
It wold have to be melting temps and you’d probably need to dip them in water for a a long time for that to happen
Would the Falt guide gloves keep hands warm in the sub zero temperatures? Looking for a Hestra glove that is versatile. Hate to have multiple gloves for different purposes
Hey! Yes they would, you could accompany them with a pair of liners to stay even warmer!
Två av tre är väl inte illa? Använder Skullman istället för Ergohandskarna. De kanske får bli en julklapp till mig själv.
Jag tycker det låter jättebra! Ergo handskarna blir en fin julklapp! :) tack för att du tittar!
Say more about the Foldsack? 🥺
I did brother, there’s a whole video on it! Fold sack no 3, search the channel! :)
@@TedWeirum spoiler alert, I guess I had already seen it and just forgot. I watched it again though!
Good! :)
How do the outer gloves feel without the liners? Do they feel really big?
Hey, the feel fine, you still get a good grip and they are still good for normal use, on warmer days they’re great for protection when using an axe or a saw. Thanks for watching brother!
Can you use the merino wool gloves inside the Falt guide outer gloves?
Yes! No problem at all! :)
Excellent. Love your videos by the way: I'm a huge Fjallraven fan too. I also really like your choice of music and the way the videos are put together!
Thanks a lot Antony! Hollywood keeps calling but I let them hang! ;) as long as we’re all having a good time! Thanks for the support!
make sure you negotiate a decent fee! Fjallraven gear for the rest of your life for free at least...... :)
“With great products comes great fees..” or whatever they say..
Great review! Thanks.
My pleasure! :)
Great review 👍
Thanks! :)
Nice
Thanks Geoffrey!

So the think padded glove is not so much for dexterity?
No shit Sherlock!

Hahaha, you’re the legend!
@@TedWeirum if you had time, I am sure you would be able to put together a very good short bushcraft series Ray Mears style. I suppose asking for some production support would the challenge to do it impartially.
Yeah, it would be awesome to do that, I’m a big fan of ray mears!
This is a great video. Thank you! I'm on the cusp with sizing and hope you can help. I have a 23cm circumference hand, and Hestra says that makes me a 9. You wrote you also use a 9, and have a nice snug fit. Is your hand basically the same size? Did the Ergo stretch out a little over time to make it perfectly matched? Thank you!
Yes! And should it be a bit tight it will stretch with time! :)
@@TedWeirum Minutes ago the mailman dropped off a pair in 9 and they're the perfect length and a snug fit. Knowing they'll form to my hands makes me confident I won't need to size up. Thank you!
Awesome! Glad to hear it brother!
