This is written from the perspective of a soldier laying dying surrounded by his comrades.
It's based on the 1982 Falklands War. I was over there serving with 42 CDO.
Many of my former service mates had this at their funerals. I've got it listed to be played at my last hurrah.
Now the sun's gone to hell and
    The moon's riding high
    Let me bid you farewell
    Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line in your palm
    We're fools to make war
    On our brothers in arms

Hi love your reactions to my favorite band. This song live from DIRE STRAITS Live ON THE NIGHT 1993 is a performance everyone needs to see at least once in their lifetime. Every RUclips

“On The Night” 92 is their finest live performance ever captured imho. Too many high points to mention, however with regard to Brothers In Arms, when the spotlight hits Mark on that final solo it becomes a transcend moment in the show. Too bad so many reactioners have no idea what their best compositions were or where to find their best performances. I’ll just say it’s a learning curve within a journey. Saw this Tour and it didn’t disappoint.

I agree with your comments although I believe it's just about war in general and the camaraderie of soldiers. Beyond that, listen again to the incredible feeling through the dynamics that Mark Knopfler imparts with his finger-style mastery of the electric guitar (he doesn't use a pick in the vast majority of hi playing). He truly is one of the greats (top ten in most all-time best guitarist lists). Go back to Dire Straits' first album... It's all fire by Knopfler. 😁

  • @markbrooks8144
    @markbrooks8144 Год назад +13

Nice reaction. Thank you. Dire Straits and. Mark Knopfler (solo) can take your emotions anywhere. Not being “wowed” by the version of “Sultans of Swing” you reacted to is understanble. While good, it was underwhelming compared to the live version (Alchemy Live). Now that you have done virtually the “studio” version, you would see a huge difference in the “Alchemy” version. I hope to see you do it sometime. However, if you want a different song to react to “Telegraph Road” also from “Alchemy Live” is another stunning track. Stick with them. Their orchestration and their musicianship is up there with Pink Floyd.

You perceived his message very well. I am grateful to your moving reaction to a powerful poem in a song. I hear a bit of an anti-war theme in the lyric where he says we are fools to make war on our brothers in arms, but it is indeed about the comradery of men on the battlefield. This is a farewell to his buddies from one who knows he is about to die.

  • @lauraschwartz1077

We get sent into war by those that do not fight it. The populations of the planet generally do not want to fight each other, who picks or starts the war? "We are fools to make war on our brothers in arms" outlines fighting against the other brothers from other countries who are also fighting for their country. Imagine a planet where all military personnel stood together for humanity, against evil and corruption.

The most moving line "we're fools to make war on our brothers in arms" meaning the enemy soldiers. The drawings were depictions of soldiers in the 1st world war trenches jumping out to charge the enemy with their bayonetted rifles, bombs exploding around and mustard gas.

When you get to war and death, it gets rough. This song brings me to tears every time I hear it. The album was released in 1985 I think, but you'd think Mark Knopfler had written the song yesterday. He is one of a handful of guitarists that can really make his guitar sing and his solos on this just transport me.

Welcome to the virtuoso that is Mark Knopfler. The whole band were on another level. Obviously Knopfler on vocals and lead guitar. John Illsley on Bass, Pick Withers on Drums, Alan Clarke on Keys. Guy Fletcher joined from this point onwards on 2nd keys. Other musicians too for the album and subsequent crazy world tour. One of a kind.

They haven’t WOWED you yet? What kind of music DO you like? This is one oif the best bands EVER and each member of it is an OUTSTANDING musician. Their chemistry when they’re performing together is beyond awesome. I don’t understand how ANYONE can say that they have watched Dire Straits and not been WOWED, unless you’ve only watched the official videos of the studio versions. If that’s the case, then I will let you off a little bit. You simply cannot get the best of this band untill you watch them LIVE.
PS: I went and checked out your sampling of this band and just as I suspected, you haven’t even scratched the surface of this band and you haven’t looked at the LIVE performances, which is where they really kick it. Get online and check out anything from their Alchemy LIve videos, which will blow your mind.

No sir, this is not a hard listen, if you have patriotism and belief in your fellow man and belief in courage and perseverance then this is an easy listen it's emotional but if it isn't then you don't have any of those things in you and you remain empty and cold so a hard listen I think not.
