The more I listen to this unit, the only way I can describe it is having a completely intuitive sound. It's like it just works in a natural way and the release time compliments almost anything you put through it.
It's amazing. I have it on my Apollo twin console. Just remember you don't always need compression. For example, distorted electric guitar - the amp speakers act as a compressor, outputting constant volume. Specifically rhythm guitar. 🎸
this is actually a cool idea...whenever you make an adjustment on your gear: shout; WoooHooo!!!! It helps remind you and everyone else what it's really supposed to be about.
Increíble sobre vocal. La ecualización que produce es fantástica, cálida pero a la vez presente. Entiendo porque es tan famoso este compresor. Y barato!!!
Love this comp. It just works and having the UAD plugins is even better. You can use it across board and the different units have different flavors. Vocals, Bass really favor and probably get this units touch every time.
It adds thickness but spreads it evenly over the whole signal instead of in th bass area like cheaper compressors or levelers...i like it better on instruments though and on final mixes stems or stereo tracks.
+Antoine Yetts You can always compensate for bass reponse using an eq'd side chain. As a historical aside: in broadcast situations, older compressors (predating the LA2A) would have been of the Vari mu type, and would have had pre-emphasis (high boost) added to the signal before compression. My guess is that the more balanced response of the LA2A is, at least in part, due to the natural (optical) characteristic of the T4B optical attenuator.
There were some questions asked and the answers sometimes never said what was implied... For opto compressors like this, the release time depends on how much compression, because it depends on the saturation of the opto sensor. As it gets more saturated, as you drive it harder, it takes more time to let that energy drain away and release again. So gain reduction and release time are tied together.
In all equipment reviews, the signal after is much louder. It is necessary to compare at the same volume, because if "louder" it does not mean "better".
omg! the bass sounds killer,if i ever happen to send my tracks to doc mix for mixing n mastering,i will definetly request to use la-2a on my bass tracks
There seems to be something wrong with this device. Dont you recogniz the short drop of compression when turning the gain up? I assume the control voltage drops to zero and needs some time to recover. This device needs some service!!
I have been using this unit for years in great studios all over the US and all the best studios in the nation have one. Of course, anyone born into digital might argue the point but even the digital plug-ins for this unit don't compare to the actual unit itself. Of course, if you have never experienced it in person, I would suggest trying one someday and compare natural tube white noise compression to fatten sound, over digital. I believe that digital has it's place and the ones who operate it successfully make their own arguments and I personally have experienced both sides many times but I still lean towards tube technology for my own projects. Most all the plug in's that are made for digital are trying to emulate tube sound. RD
I think that the RUclips is interfering with some equipment being heard with the detail I would like. I can hear what it is doing, but somehow I feel the audio is not allowing me to hear it with definition. It isn’t your fault. It is a RUclips thing!🤭😬
This might be a dumb question, but how do I control input gain? What if my input signal is too low and needs a boost? Does the LA-2A set the correct input gain automatically?
This appears to be an early version, with no compressor/limiter switch. Am I correct? Therefore, this LA-2A would simply be a limiter only, as, like you said, it was a "levelling amplifier" intended for radio broadcast usage.
67Stu,,,It still compresses the signal,,when you control what goes in and what comes out separately,,common sense tells you that if more goes in than comes out, youre compressing the signal,,therefore its a compressor,,, Jeeez!
Jeeeez? Correction: it's still a limiter, as the ratio is fixed is way more than 10:1; actually, since the ratio is 100:1 in limit mode, it's a "brick-wall" limiter. The amount of peak reduction applied does effect the amount of compression in terms of decibels, not ratio. The question here is, what is the ratio setting on the original incarnation of the LA-2? Whatever the version, it's still an amazing compressor/limiter, and no studio should be without one (or two, or three).
Thanks for your demos, Sincerely.... I have noticed that when you do demos you don't keep the volume levels the same. Thanks again though... Sincerely #SeanRyderWilliams
I've been trying to talk myself into buying a Distressor instead of splurging on this but I'm having a hard time... the LA-2A just has mojo to it that no other compressor has. Call it fuzz or warmth or hair or whatever... it just adds something to everything that passes through it that makes it sound better and I'm not even talking about the compression which is smooth as butter (use Barbara Striesand voice there). Bruce Swedien hardly used compression but when he did, it was this so... `nuff said.
Hi Kevin Lee, when compressing the sound a lot and diving the unit, any noise that is quietly in the vocal will be brought up. The unit does have a small amount of self noise when pushed very hard too. It's probably a combination of both :)
what made you say you thought you could go easier on the compression..? what was it doing that made you say that? thanks btw - you guys are so cool. and the guy that does these is freakin adorable :)
keepitlo00 That's not what "they" say. There are countless good compressors that do different things to audio. Some are transparent others add harmonics. Different tools. Would you say a sledgehammer is a better hammer than a ball peen hammer?
To my ears I hear that the LA-2A makes the signal just really sweet and musical. It adds some thickness but not alot IMO. I believe the Tube Tech CL1B adds more thickness than an LA-2A but it doesnt add the sweet subtle tone and musicality that the LA-2A does.
+AdonisAiolos yeah i agree i think it adds thickness but spreads it evenly over the whole signal instead of in the bass area like cheaper compressors or levelers..
+AdonisAiolos As a studio technician and a man who has been repairing stuff like this professionally for a good 17 years, I'll have to disappoint you a bit. You are adding a hell of a lot of mumbo jumbo there, and classic _audio myth folklore_ that you'll hear everywhere from internet forums to enthusiastic novice producers, just getting to know compressors and gear like this. All it adds, is apparent level, my friend. There is no cream or warmth, only cream you see is in the beautiful simplistic vintage design of the machine. That's the "cream" you hear. Just stop adding all of these apparent mythical changes to the sound. Cos' I know it's bullshit, as a man who has worked with compressors from the cheapest to the most prestigious. It's a very simple design, the components are quite expensive, because of the way they're designed and the fact that they're discreet. And the fact that it has become a _classic_ and a _Brand_ exactly due to people like you, who buy folklore like this very easily. It's an inside joke among technicians... Oh, you poor guys. Spending 2g's on shit like this. Oh well... Good that someone's getting paid! Ps. A million dollar question to you, "Adonis". Could you elaborate a bit, on the "musicality" as you put it, that compressor apparently adds. What is it, if I may inquire in a more technical sense? How would you define it? ; ) * getting the popcorn *
+ANPHKI I work with things too, but disagree. You could say the same for anything in life. That's way too general. Audio electronics is an art and the experience of the piece is subjective and should be honored that way.
+ANPHKI Very much agreed. The LA2A is not magic. It's a compressor/limiter pure and simple. It does not imbue the signal with mystical redistributed/resynthesized frequency content as some people seem to suggest.. Sure, it may distort if you make it work hard, but most engineers I know, appreciate it for what it does - ie manage dynamics in a way that generally benefits the music. Great on bass and vocals (imo)
suebillina If it's just another compressor, then why do so many engineers pay more for it and make a cult following around it? I'm not saying it truly is a mystical wonder, but I don't think smart people with good ears just recommend it for its looks.
it is subtle but when it's on it really does add a lot of life to the vocals. If there was too much compression just for the sake of showing a huge difference it'd ruin the vocal dynamics anyways my dood
ok so turning the unit on and off actually shows the difference because if it's on the entire time you can more see the difference than hear it cause when i use the waves plugin version of it just inserting it give it a more upfront sound
I will never never never understand videos like this one ! It makes absolutely NO SENSE to compare gear like this in SOLO ! High End Equipment shows it´s power IN THE MIX ! The transients and warmth on the bass and the electric guitar gave me an eargasm.
The more I listen to this unit, the only way I can describe it is having a completely intuitive sound. It's like it just works in a natural way and the release time compliments almost anything you put through it.
This really just gives anything you use with it a complete and complimenting feature. Just amazing.
Man it just sounds so huge, but nearly transparent with just a hint of warmth! Fantastic!
It's amazing. I have it on my Apollo twin console. Just remember you don't always need compression. For example, distorted electric guitar - the amp speakers act as a compressor, outputting constant volume. Specifically rhythm guitar. 🎸
it's like butter, makes everything smoother
Nice! Adds pleasant thickness and roundness to the sound.
this is actually a cool idea...whenever you make an adjustment on your gear: shout; WoooHooo!!!! It helps remind you and everyone else what it's really supposed to be about.
Wow a lot of warmth and create fullness even when listened through speaker phones.
Superlative demos. Great to see Prism Sound represented. Cheers.
I was thinking the same thing. Silent hero.

This is the best compressor I've heard so far!
His enthusiasm 😂😂 One of my dream units

You can't beat analog, it delivers a "ready" sound in a matter of seconds.
***** I'm glad you agree :-)
+Davi Aquino It just sounds "right".
Precisely. When we first got our hands on it we expected it to sound great, but weren't quite prepared for it to sound THIS great! Haha ;-)

That shit makes it warm as hell
I would like to hear how the UAD LA2A compares
Damn I need this compressor in my life :)
What also made it great was that it had only two knobs Gain & Peak. No fussing just great sound.
very cool video doc, i've only seen the numerous vst clones so appreciate this.

I luv the vintage gear.
Really cool! For people on a budget I can really recommend the SA-2A from Stam Audio.
I heard some kind of popping on the vocals and the Bass? Is something wrong with it?
sounds amazing! Thanks for the video!
Hi Ricardo! Glad you like the video!
I am all about that bass.
Nice one :D
Would be nice if you can compare it with UAD LA2A.
Cheers

Who do you recommend to mix hip hop drums
I thought it was "Where ever ladies sat was his home",,,great piece of vintage gear,, but how would you incorporate it into a DAW ?
During tracking on an insert or later in mixing use one of outputs on your interface then go back on aux input

I would love to hear your thought on the SK Note SDC - Stereo Double Compressor.
oh wow i never really got into compressors but wow this sounds good
Hi can you do this vs the Plugin versions ?
Would you ever use an LA2A in limit mode on the master? Since the Manley Slam and Shadow Hills both use opto limiters..
Has a higher noise floor than most la2as I've used. Might have a leaky filter cap.
Nice
Love the enthusiasm... :D
How does this compare tothe older LA 2 ?
is it possible to turn off the analog noise? like in the plugins.. I cant stand it, but every thing else sounds amazing!
I think that the RUclips is interfering with some equipment being heard with the detail I would like. I can hear what it is doing, but somehow I feel the audio is not allowing me to hear it with definition. It isn’t your fault. It is a RUclips thing!🤭😬
Mark Philpot your system is missing lower freq. You can hear super obvious in headphones
So glad i bought apollo twin
How does it ad harmonics through saturation/distortion?
This might be a dumb question, but how do I control input gain? What if my input signal is too low and needs a boost? Does the LA-2A set the correct input gain automatically?
You need pre amp
i love u Dude .. thanks for that video
Is this the real one or the 1999 reissue? (how do the 'real' one and reissue compare?)
this is the original. the 1999 reissue was by universal audio which will have the UA emblem on it
this is awesome

The sound this compressor introduces is so hard to explain, but you just know it's there! So fat !!
hey man, could you send tb 303 baselines and synthesizer sounds through it?
yes for sure! But in principle there are no rules!
very cool
It’s kinda funny that it just makes things sound better lol
Do u like la2a or la3a?
sounds good
when u drive it harder, the hissing sound is getting louder idk is it from the background or is it from the music sample?

Bypass..ok, then engage and the volume jumps like 5dB. May I suggest leveling both for an objective comparison?
Yeah, I commented on the same thing. Louder always sounds better, so it's a useless test if you don't match input and output levels.
Great Video....but between Tim P Nebula Opto 32 with Nebula and Warm Audio WA...(Which I have thier GComp) Im just not hearing $4000 improvement
Nice 👍
It's pretty slow tho. Trying my best to like it. Ive really only liked examples of it on dialogue. This is all in comparison to 1176
"Mama I'm de-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-P-ending on you!"...
"Let's drive this harder" - barely touches the knobs.
famous "subtle" change in the audio world

weird autotuned vocal, but LA2A sounds amazing
